NAME: Thayd Karkoza
FACTION: Jedi Order
RANK: Jedi Knight
SPECIES: Anzat
AGE: 118
GENDER: Male
HEIGHT: 6'6"
WEIGHT: 210 lbs.
FORCE SENSITIVE: Yes, trained.

APPEARANCE:

A striking figure. Tall. Black hair, tan skin. Green-gold eyes with dark bags under them. Sinewy. Lots of sharp angles. Bad target for cannibals. He's not thin but he looks kind of starved around the eyes. His face is frequently obscured in either some kind of ad hoc makeup or mask or whatever he can get away with. What can be said... he's always had a taste for the theatrical. Travels a lot, and his garb will often borrow from the aesthetic of his surroundings in some way.

ATTRIBUTES:

As an anzat, Thayd suffers from certain hideous and predatory appetites. It is the nature of his kind to feed off the life energy of sentient organisms. This is achieved by literally consuming part of the brain of one's prey. The anzati refer to the consumed susbstance as "the soup". Once the soup has been tasted even a single time, it creates a supposedly irresistible addiction in the anzat, and they are compelled to feed in this way again and again or else they may die, or descend into madness. Thayd has never tasted the soup. His jedi training occurred before he entered puberty, so prior to the onset of this appetite, and through power of will he has restrained himself from indulging this most primal of temptations. This need to constantly suppress his nature places an enormous burden on Thayd. Perhaps this is why he lives such a solitary life.

One of his greatest shortcomings is his isolation. Hard to make it in this world on your own, and Thayd rarely seems to work with others, especially for prolonged periods of time. Even more rarely does he form lasting friendships. For a number of reasons, it is dangerous for a Jedi Knight to be this way.

Despite these weakness and challenges, Thayd has major strengths. He is intelligent, creative, focused, and powerful in the Force. Although he has a streak of hubris in him, he's still anchored by a moral core that places value for life above just about anything else.

PERSONALITY:

Thayd has an obsessive nature. He burns the midnight oil and pursues his goals to the utmost. You could call this dedication or single-mindedness. He's an experimenter, a fountain of curiosity. He likes to find the boundaries and test them. He's flamboyant in his way, at times exuding an infectious delight even amid the dimmest environs.

Basically this person does not really make friends easily, unless you are some kind of avian. A higher purpose absorbs him, and this often keeps him apart from others. Not always great company. In times of levity though this intensity subsides and gives way to a breezier Thayd.

BIOGRAPHY:

Trained in the Jedi ways many years ago. It began around 48 or 49 ABY, when a very young Thayd Karkoza departed the Anzati homeworld to accompany his father on a hunt. Though he had not yet reached the age at which Anzati partake of the soup, he was deemed old enough to learn the ways of their kind in hunting their prey. These hunts (or "feasts" as they were sometimes called) were long, arduous journeys that could sometimes last years and consisted of many meals. For an Anzat, any sentient creature will do for a meal, but all Anzati dream of greater prizes. In their prey, they value high intelligence and Force-sensitivity above all other qualities.

They had been away from home for two years, and were nearing the end of this excursion when their path took them to one of the moons of Ossus, a lushly forested little world home to a small number of Neti. The Neti, a rare sight in the galaxy, are a species of sentient, tree-like beings that, like the Anzati, are often Force-sensitive and very long-lived. To make a meal of one of these incredible beings would probably mark a first for Anzat-kind. However, underestimating one of them can be a very dangerous mistake, which Thayd himself learned when he watched as one of these lumbering creatures managed to disarm his father, pin him to the ground beneath its sprawling root-like appendages, and transform into a giant tree on top of him, instantly crushing him to death. It is a bizarre irony that his father's body, upon decomposition, would fertilize the ground beneath this mighty tree and, well, feed it.

Naturally, young Thayd was horrified, and attempted to flee back to his ship to escape that place, but he was easily apprehended by a number of other Neti. Seeing that he was essentially still a child, the Neti elected not to crush him to death. Instead, recognizing that like them he possessed a potent sensitivity to the Force, they took him in. As an ancient and supremely wise people, the Neti knew what Thayd was, what Thayd's father had been. They knew that unless he could be instilled with the power to resist his appetites, that one day when the craving for the "soup" took hold, Thayd would roam the stars as a predator. They couldn't let that happen. Something had to be done.

One of these Neti, a Jedi Knight by the name of Udo Kaa, thought he could help Thayd and teach him to live in such a way that he could overcome his hunger. And so he personally raised the young Anzat. Raised him to be a master of his own urges, rather than a slave to them. Raised him to feel a duty, a calling, to revere life, rather than a compulsion to consume it. Suffice it to say he raised Thayd to be a Jedi.

Thayd spent more than 20 years with the Neti in that place. His skill with the "plant surge" and "animal bond" techniques can be credited to his time there among them. Alongside his Jedi training, there were other pursuits he found worthwhile, in particular an interest in botanical sciences. The ability to make life flourish has a special allure that Thayd has embraced almost fanatically. In 71 ABY he left that little forest moon of Ossus and went to... Ossus, where he passed the trials administered by the Jedi Masters there and became a Knight. Since then he has been part of the Jedi Order.

For decades he was a steadfast presence within Order. He never really sought glory or rank. He served dutifully, and simply did what he could. Much of the time this meant using his gifts to assist in crop production or ecological recovery where it was needed most, to help mitigate famine or environmental destruction in the places touched by poison and war. At the same time he continued to develop his scientific expertise, occasionally taking leave from the Order to engage in a wide range of field studies and laboratory research. Somewhere along the way, though, something changed.

For one reason or another, over time Thayd's connection with the Order became more distant. His contact with them grew more sporadic and irregular, to the point that it would sometimes be months before he would even respond to a communique. These days there are long periods of radio silence from Thayd Karkoza. It's almost as if he has settled into a sort of uneasy semi-retirement, although he is more absorbed in his scientific pursuits than ever. From time to time he resurfaces to dole out agricultural assistance to local dirt farmers and generally seems to be a decent ambassador of the Jedi Order wherever he undertakes this most charitable work.

SKILLS:

Thayd's talents with the Force have always given him special communion with the natural world. He is usually quick to bond with any animal, though the winged and feathered variety are a particularly kindred spirit to him. In a sense he's a collector, always looking to acquire the novel. Once his bond with an animal is strong enough, Thayd can generally bid these animals to do as he pleases, though the greater the beast (or the greater their number) the more difficult this feat becomes.

Thayd has a gift for what is often crudely labeled the "plant surge" technique. His skill in this area is augmented by his scientific expertise in botany, something he acquired during his many years with the Neti. Although the technique has real combat applications, Thayd has always felt that its true potential reaches far beyond that. He means to explore this potential to the fullest.

Thayd has never sought to be any master swordsman. To him a lightsaber is just another tool. It has its place. Is it not the law in the kingdom of life that some beasts must be put down? But this art is a dark one, and to press too far too fast invites the abyss. His chosen form is Soresu. A stable way, a careful way that he practices with a fair, albeit modest, degree of skill.

Beyond this, Thayd has proficient command over the basic Force powers that all Jedi Knights should be well versed in.

GEAR:
+Green-bladed Lightsaber
+Datapad
+Jedi utility belt
+Wodan's Spear - A spear treated with Sith alchemy to enable it to withstand contact with a lightsaber. Thayd retrieved this weapon from the battlefield in the aftermath of the clash on Onderon, and has kept it with him since.
+Thayd possesses a series of large glass jugs filled with dark loamy soil and a healthy helping of fertilizer. Each of these is occupied by some kind of plant in this or that stage of development. These pods can be fastened to a harness and worn, one at a time, on Thayd's back, allowing him to give the plants inside frequent attention throughout the day and night if he wishes. They are heavy to wear though, and can impair agility and make the wearer tire more quickly if they are doing a lot of strenuous activity with one of these on their back.

ROLE-PLAYS:
[TBD]

SHIP:
The Cauldron

PETS:
Two large birds (around 2 feet tall each) that skulk and swagger around and laugh as they please. They always seem to be somewhere near Thayd, sometimes standing directly on top of him.
