Power stations on Core worlds tended to be one of two types - either they were well maintained hives of organization or they were ancient, held together by tech so old that no one even understood it anymore, and surrounded by slum housing.

The second type of power station was common on planets like Corellia and Coruscant but the first type of power station was common on planets that, for lack of a better term, had their act together. Planets like Chandrila had power plants that were far removed from the major cities and regulated to the nth degree to make sure they were about as well maintained as could reasonably be expected. Good shift patterns for workers, especially the safety officials and the like, meant that even the staff should have been reasonably content.

So finding out that one of the main Chandrilan power plants was going to explode was news of the kind that woke Max up better than a strong cup of coffee. The newscaster had further elaborated to explain that a rather radical group promoting the separation of Chandrila from the New Republic had seized control of the power plant in the early hours of the morning.

They had hostages and the local defense forces were not confident in their ability to get them out safely without the threat of the bombs being realized and half the planet going dark for months.

Arriving at the edge of the cordon that had been set up by the local authorities, Max waved one of the soldiers over and spoke to him for a moment. He didn't have a badge to flash like a Ranger would have but not many types of people wandered around planets in armoured robes with lightsabers on hand so he was believed to be a Jedi and allowed to make his way to the command tent.

Time to see if he was going to be able to keep the weather as "cloudy with no chance of explosions".

The call of the Force had gone silent. Alex’s life had once been a clearly defined path. The Light spoke and she listened. It pulled her across the galaxy, seeking those who needed her most. She had always been filled with certainty, no doubts clouding her mind, but now the Force grew quiet. Darkness crept across the galaxy…The Force speaking softly. She no longer felt clarity. Oh, a part of her knew the whispers she heard. Fight…stand tall…beat back the Darkness.

That wasn’t who she was or who she wanted to be. She was a healer. She wasn’t some cavalier Jedi Knight dashing off to adventure. Alex sighed as her feet thudded into the soft ground of Chandrilla. Kriff. What was she doing her? The Force wouldn’t speak to her…so she decided to make her own path. She would determine where her destiny lay, one way or the other.

A power plant had been taken over by enthusiastic protestors. This wasn’t the typical situation Alex would have involved herself in. She was capable with a saber but certainly wouldn’t be called a bladesmith. Her skills with the Force were enviable, yet she generally reserved those for gentler uses. If the Force was pushing her towards involvement in the conflict with the Sith she needed to figure out what it wanted.

So, it was Alex found herself approaching the standoff. She knew other Jedi were on the planet. Frankly, she had no idea who. Her friendships in the Order were few and far between. The Morellian Jedi Knight took a deep breath and slid her lightsaber from her sleeve to her belt. Might as well act the part. A few more steps and she was in the throng of busy activity as plans were made for a hostage rescue. The Force hummed with building tension.

Apparently the standard procedure when dealing with hostage situations on this planet was to keep waiting until they gave their demands and try and pay them, picking the criminals up at a later date. But no one on the planet was willing, or even able really, to give into the demands when the demand (singular) was to pull the planet out of the New Republic effective immediately. Not only did no one actually have the authority to do it but to pull out of a massive arrangement like the New Republic immediately? It was just something that could not be done immediately.

It would take years of talks to re-negotiate trade deals and the like.

But the long and the short of it was that the military was going to have to try and come up with a hostage rescue plan and none of them had experience with it. After all, Chandrila had the credits to merely give into the demands and chase them down later and get their credits back that way. Max had dealt with a few on his own but he usually had some back up and... oh what was this hmm? A presence in the Force that was refined, trained and Light?

Following his senses, Max spotted the female Jedi Knight and waved her over.

"Glad to see I'm not the only one called here."
he greeted her with a grin, "Master Tionson - call me Max. I don't believe we've met?"

Best to get introductions out of the way before talking about the mission he was formulating in his mind to rescue the hostages.

Thank the Force.
Alex sighed with relief as a robed arm shot into the air. She wasn’t the only Jedi drawn to the increasingly dire situation. These situations required diplomacy but if that failed there was truly only one option. An option she did not relish conquering alone. Equally wonderful, the eye-patched Jedi introduced himself first. A small smile crept across Alex’s face as she walked over. “I doubt we have.” She paused for a moment. “I’m not great at making friend.” Her eyes flicked towards the officials walking by. Yes, they seemed appropriately concerned.

“Knight Alexandria Voran but please call me Alex.” She ran a hand through her hair. “It takes too long to say Alexandria.” The Force continued to hum with a distressing tension. This was getting far worse. They needed to act quickly before there was no going back. Luckily, she had a basic understanding of the demands. “I don’t suppose our intrepid hostage takers have lowered their demands.” There was not a chance in the Force the demands could possibly be met. That meant one of two things. One, the criminals were delusional or two, they had no desire to truly release the hostages. A bad beat all the way around. Alex sighed softly. “This might be more your pay grade than mine.”

There was very little her skill set could accomplish here. If negotiations were pointless, what was she doing? Alex was not the saber wielding hero. She would only get in the way. Sadly, that decision was made without her. A few shots rang out in the distance. Suddenly there were orders being shouted all around them. Out of reflex Alex wrapped the Force around herself, her saber hilt leaping into her hand. “Kirff…that seems bad.” She could feel forces marshaling and activity burst around them. There would soon be no turning back.

A Jedi who wasn't good at making friends? He would like to say that was rare in the Galaxy but these days it was more common than not. Good thing he was known as a bit of a friendly talker anyway - if the chance came to try and talk them down it would be something he could handle he was sure. But having two Jedi instead of one would do wonders - even if she didn't do anything, her presence alone would ensure that they paid more attention to them.

"Nice to meet you Alex - don't worry, I'm gregarious enough for two."

Plus he made people think of their dad now that he was middle aged. It didn't sound like much but he'd honestly had people freeze in aiming a blaster at him before because he reminded them, in that split second, of their father. Cute and sometimes he could weaponize it - no downsides there at all!

"Think this goes way over mine too..."

He didn't even think Oren would be enough to give the people what they wanted. The shots ringing out around them didn't startle him much because he'd been expecting them... dreading them really. Before the shooting started there had been a chance to talk to people but once blasters started firing?

Well conversation went out the window.

"Alright Alex follow me - we're going to make an emergency rescue operation on the hostages. We ignore anything they're doing to the station because it doesn't matter - we're in the business of saving lives, even at the expense of infrastructure."
he paused before looking at her, giving her his one and only condition and rule, "No deaths. No one dies by our blades, agreed?"

A chill settled around the Jedi. The cold calculus of the Force shifting. Violence began to hum through the Light. Death was a natural part of life, and therefore a part of the Lightside of the Force. This was not natural. Death at the hands of a blaster was not a natural part of life. Violence was Darkness. Alex suppressed a shiver. She was eighty years old and Jedi for six decades. She would not act some frightened teenager. The Morellian Knight avoided violence but she not a dewy-eyed schoolgirl. “Life over buildings…how refreshing.” War tended to make the populace jaded. There were growing feelings the Jedi placed protecting crumbling Temples over lives. Alex knew the truth, but it was sometimes hard to see.

She nodded as Max finished speaking. “No deaths, by my hand or yours.” Max did not know Alex, but she had never taken a life. Oh, she’d been forced to fight before and caused her fair share of injuries, but she had never killed. She certainly was not about to start. “There is enough bloodshed without us adding to it.” Alex casually spun the unlit lightsaber hilt in her hand. She walked a few paces until she crested the small hill. She could see the blaster fire being exchanged back and forth. She frowned. Annoying. “You don’t happen to know a back way in do you?” The Force continued to hum with tension. There would be no peaceful resolution. She knew that now.

“I don’t exactly like our prospects of the front door.” Alex would do what was necessary but walking through a hail of blaster bolts was very low on her list. She was a serviceable bladesmith, that didn’t mean she wanted to test how many deflections she could manage. Alex suspected Max was more capable in that department. At least, she hoped he was.

Max always tried to make sure that the people he worked with were willing to stick to the rules he knew he held himself to. The main one being that he didn't ever want to kill someone. He'd met Sith before and he hadn't wanted to kill them even with how the Dark Side made them feel so utterly wrong to his senses.

Some rebellious locals? Not even close to breaking his own rule for that.

It was a relief she shared his views on that.

"You have a point - they don't look like they'll believe my great impression of a pizza delivery boy."
he replied in deadpan, "Guess we'll see how they feel about my impression of a meteor."

Yeah Max had an idea.

Gesturing for her to follow him, Max wandered over to where the local military was keeping their troop carriers. The sort of ships that people rained down from on ropes and such - though as Jedi they probably wouldn't need ropes. He nodded to the pilot.

"See if you can get him to be agreeable to do a fly-by of the installation? I'm going to secure us some stun grenades."

Even Jedi could use tech when it was a good idea!

Don’t roll your eyes.
Alex fought the urge through sheer force of will. She doubted it would make a good impression having known Max for all of five minutes. Jokes weren’t really her thing. Although, he soundly oddly serious about the meteor. You probably didn’t lose an eye being cautious. Alex dutifully followed as they made their way over to the transport. She swallowed past the lump in her throat. This should be fun. “Oh good, blasters, grenades, and flying…what could go wrong?” One eyebrow raised questioningly. Before Max could retort, she waved him away. “I’ll secure transport.” Alex put on her best serious Jedi face.

She approached the pilot, pushing calm into the Force. They didn’t need anyone to get overly excited. The pilot nodded. “Ma’am.” Alex wasn’t sure if she should salute or not. “We need a ride, soldier, particularly in that direction.” She pointed towards the installation. The Jedi Knight immediately felt hesitation in the Force. “Well, ma’am, um, you see, we can’t, ya know, the blasters and everything.” Fear. She knew fear. She could work with that. “We’re Jedi soldier.” Alex pointed towards Max. “You see that fellow over there, he is a Jedi Master, legendary warrior, and we need your help.” Her arms swept across the hillside.

“Look at all these people…your fellow soldiers. They don’t have to risk their lives if we end this, but we can’t get in there alone.” Alex pushed confidence into the Force. Hope. The pilot straighten a little a saluted. “Yes, ma’am. I can fly you over!” She clapped him on the back for good measure. That felt like the right thing to do. Alex reached out in the Force and brushed against Max’s mind. “Done…now stop dilly dallying.” She took one calming breath and plunged deeper into the Light. She would need all the strength she could muster.

Grabbing stun grenades and some breaching charges was almost concerning all things told. He wandered over to the ammo dump and looked like he belonged and people just, kind of, ignored him and what he was looking for. They were busy preparing for a frontal assault so he supposed it kind of made sense. Loading up a backpack with the items he needed, he left quickly.

They would probably approve of their methods later but no one was going to authorize them so it was time to do things the Hannibal way; ask for forgiveness rather than permission... and only ask for forgiveness if you get caught.

And try to never get caught.

"I got what I needed and no one asked any questions - I'm not confused as to how they got weapons any longer. Their operational security sucks."

With the backpack ready, he boarded the ship with Alex and the pilot and took a deep breath as they started to take off. He ran a hand through his hair and shook his head slightly.

"Alright - get us over the part of the facility that they believe the hostages to be in."

Gathering the Force to himself, he closed his eyes and started to prepare.

"When we're over it? We're going to jump. That way the ship can bug out before it gets shot down."

“Lovely, not dangerous at all.” Alex had faced her share of life-threatening situations. They were not something she avoided, but certainly she did not seek them out. One deep breath. The Jedi Knight reminded herself there was more to being a Jedi than healing the sick and caring for the poor. So many thought what she did was foolish. The Order needed to be more than the sum of its parts. Heal the sick, save the innocent, follow the Light, and defeat the Darkness. She plunged herself into the Light…seeking the calm center of the Force.

In half a moment she was in the transport. The pilot would speed away as soon as Max stepped in. It was not a smooth ride. The pilot was capable but there was a considerable amount of fire to move around. Blaster bolts sailed by as they approached the installation. “Now or never!” The voiced sounded from the cockpit. Now. Buoyed by the Force, Alex stepped from the speeding transport without hesitation. Her indigo saber sprung to life with a snap-hiss. She soared through the air towards the roof. For a brief moment as the wind rushed by, she felt peace.

Then the shooting started. The forces who had taken the instillation weren’t fools. They had seen the transport coming and knew what that meant. The angle the forces had on the Jedi as they dropped wasn’t perfect, but it was good enough to get some shots off. Alex wrapped the Force around herself, as she plunged towards the roof. Her blade moved through the air with some effort, blocking a few bolts that came a little too close.

She landed with a firm thud on the roof, pooling the Force into her legs to brace the impact. Dramatic. It was then she noticed the burn in the robes on her right arm. That was going to sting. Alex dropped the billowy robes on the roof. She wore plain synthweave trousers and tunic beneath. The Knight quirked one eyebrow at Max. “Now what?”

Max grimaced a little bit at the reminder that this was not really a great plan. She was right; it really kind of wasn't but he wasn't really sure if they had any other good options. He wasn't ever going to be against talking but the violence had already started and through no fault of their own. Leaning against the metal of the ship, he gave her a small smile.

"Not dangerous at all."
he jokingly agreed, "Still chance to try it a different way if you want - I'm not about to try and order you to follow me into the mouth of the beast."

That wasn't how he operated.

But she was coming along and he was grateful that she was. He would never have dreamed of ordering her or trying to convince her if she was adamantly against it but he was glad of the backup for sure. The flight over was brief... it didn't give him a chance to really regret his choices.

He stepped out two seconds after her and the ship moved away.

Both blades of his saberstaff ignited as he fell, batting away the blaster bolts either lucky enough or skilled enough to be sent his way as he fell. Twisting in his fall, he gathered the Force to himself to minimize the force of the landing atop the roof. His landing was slightly less impactful than Alex's own but not by much.

Max stood, shaking his legs out slightly as he did.

"Landing is always so hard on the knees..."
he complained quietly before becoming more focused, "Alright we need to move in; I'll try and locate the hostages in the Force for a more precise location. You got my back?"

Alex couldn’t stop the laugh. “Talk to me when you reach my age.” She casually spun her saber. “You probably won’t look this good.” This was probably a life-threatening situation, which meant they needed to focus. But, if she focused too hard then she would have to admit the curling fear in her belly. Alex Voran was a Jedi. The Light pulsed through her strongly. Yet, this was decidedly far outside her comfort. “I’ve got your back…you find the hostages…I’ll make sure we don’t become swiss cheese.” She was hit with sudden inspiration. “May the Force be with us.” That felt like a very Jedi thing to say.

Alex began to move towards the small door presumably from the roof into the building. The Knight extended her senses beyond the threshold. She didn’t sense anyone immediately beyond the door. The Force was a confusing mix of fear, anger, and anxiety. Even submerged in the Light it was truly hard to fell it all out. She thought they were fine. Alex opened the door and stepped there. There they found a narrow staircase leading deeper into the installation. She turned to Max and shrugged. This was probably as good a place to start as any. She just prayed he could locate the hostages quickly.

Yeah Max hadn't reached the age he had because he was going to joke about a woman's age. He just chuckled a little bit at her comment and looked down at himself for a moment before pulling a bit of a face.

"Don't know if you've noticed but I'm looking a bit broken down even now."

He appreciated her efforts to keep the air light as they moved into the facility. While he might be able to cover himself and locate the hostages with the Force at the same time? He was glad he didn't have to. With Alex covering for him, Max could devote more of his energies to the reason they were here; saving lives.

"We are one with the Force and the Force is with us."

Opening the door, they were greeted by stairs and not much else which meant their options were limited. With his eye closed, Max still stepped with purpose as the Force guided his movements to keep them steady and true. He could feel people throughout the facility and... there.

"Room at the bottom of the stairs is a kitchen area - one rebel there. He is... afraid, unsure of himself or... or his mission."
he opened his eye slightly, "Might be someone we can lean on to get the specific location of the hostages."

The Force was with them. Alex could feel the Light swirling around the Jedi. Her heart pounded in her ears, but she found solace in the Light. Max’s strength in the Force gave her comfort. She was not alone. She had to try and remember that. Alex reached out in the Force as Max spoke. Yes, the Force bubbled with energy beyond the door. Her eyes closed briefly as they reached the bottom of the stairs. Her breathing slowed…she reached out…her saber humming softly in her hand.

Alex’s mind brushed across the rebel. Fear warred with righteous anger. The man was conflicted. His thoughts on the surface spoke of a true believer but one who was uncertain of this course of action. A man who did not want to resort to violence to achieve their goals. They could work with that. Another deep breath and she flicked her lightsaber off. There would be no needed for that. Her eyes shot to Max. “No sabers.” She put her hand on the door. “Hopefully.” Alex pushed open the door.

A terrified sweaty young human male stood in the center of the small kitchen. He turned towards them, swinging the blaster wildly, his eyes wide with shock. Alex sensed a moment of pure panic. A moment where the rebels mind coalesced on the trigger. She quickly raised her hands…palms out. “Wait…please.” Alex resisted the urge to slam calm into the Force. They could override the young man’s mind but that was a violation. Instead, she tried to project confidence, ensure the man saw they were not a threat.

“We are not here to hurt anyone.” The fear pulsed heavily in the Force. The man began to sputter, his eyes locking onto the silver tube swinging from her belt. “I…I…I know what you are…I know what you do!” Alex kept her hands up, not stepping forward. She remained incredibly still. “Just hear us out.” Honestly, she had no idea what she was going to do. A quick prayer went up as she hoped Max was struck by more sudden brilliance.

Max didn't so much as hesitate for a second before extinguishing both blades of his saberstaff when Alex gave her decision that she wanted to try it without sabers. He'd heard it said that Jedi diplomacy was diplomacy done at the end of a length of a lightsaber and he had always disliked it. Instead he was wholeheartedly behind Alex and her decision to try it in good faith, without the inherent threat that a lightsaber gave to people across the Galaxy.

He nodded in understanding.

"Hopefully."

Panic.

Fear.

Doubt.

The young man they encountered was equal parts of all of them - the panic being a bleaker version of the fear he felt. To this young man the two Jedi may as well have been the grim reaper come for him. Max always did find it mildly jarring to see (and feel), how people in the Galaxy perceived the Jedi whenever they came across them. If the situation was as tense as this one? Well he'd seldom seen someone be glad to see them.

Max smiled a little bit at the young man.

"Hey kid."
he spoke up, getting the man shaking and spinning to point the blaster right in his face, "You know what...? I get it. I do."

Max clipped his saberstaff to his belt slowly.

"There's all this adrenaline and it feels like there's a drum beating in your ears right? You feel it in your skull?"
he spoke quietly, describing the thoughts and feelings he had experienced the first time he had gone into an active firefight as a rookie cop years ago, "And suddenly you're not even sure why you agreed to this - am I right?"

Hesitation briefly thrummed through the Force. Alex could see it as waves of tension skittering out from the rebel. Max’s words had a palpable impact. The kid lowered his blaster ever so slightly…a good sign. His eyes still shifted back and forth nervously. “How…how could you know?” Alex felt a shift in the Force. This was their chance. “Look at me.” She was taking a chance. “Really look at me.” Her eyes locked onto the young rebel. “No armor, no blasters…do I look like a solider?” The blaster lowered slightly more. Hesitation pulsed in the Force again. “I find myself pushed somewhere I never thought I would be…somewhere I truly don’t belong.” Recognition began to slowly dawn in the Force.

“This isn’t really what I wanted.” The blaster lowered further. “I’ve barely even held a blaster before.” The blaster lowered even further. Alex reached a handout. “Please put the blaster down, we just want to make sure everyone leaves alive.” The Force vibrated again. They were at a tipping point. She could feel it. Her own hesitation pulsed in the Force. “Please…” Alex didn’t dare push too hard on the young rebel’s mind. It would be far too easy to push the wrong direction. She would not take that risk. Not when they were so close.

She shot one quick look to Max, praying the young man would put the blaster down. They were right on the edge. She had sworn she would not take a life. Violence was a last resort. It should always be a last resort. The Jedi too often forgot they were meant to be so much more than sword wielding heroes. The Order could be better…should be better. Perhaps this was the start. Max and Alex would show there was a better way. “Put the blaster down and tell us where the hostages are.” Pathways began to diverge in the Force…that tipping point arrived.

Max could tell that the poor young man was getting more confused, more distressed, even as they were just talking to him. None of it was directly their fault – the kid was distressed already – but they certainly weren’t making it any better. If they weren’t on a timer to grab the hostages before they started getting used for target practice? He would have spent more time with the kid to make sure he was alright.

As Alex spoke to him, Max slowly started walking toward the young man with his hands clearly visible in front of him, open and devoid of weapons. Smiling kindly, he noticed when the man’s attention turned back to him and the blaster turned to him. The blaster was shaking slightly in his hand and Max just came closer and closer.

“W-w-what are you…?”

Max reached out and placed his right hand on the man’s left shoulder, squeezing it gently, calmingly, as he looked him in the eyes.

“It’s time to put down the blaster, son, and try again to be a man you can be proud of.”

There was a moment where he thought it might not work before the man slowly nodded and holstered his blaster. A look in his eye that seemed to say that he was happy, relieved, that he had been able to avoid shooting anyone. Max smiled a little bit.

“Can you tell us where the hostages are?”

The guard nodded with only a small amount of hesitation and pulled out an access card to give to Max.

“Take this to the doors to the right – we set them up in the armoury. Biggest doors.”

Her heart threatened to beat out of her chest. Alex fought the tension in her soul. She would not be visibly nervous as Max walked toward the young rebel. The Jedi Knight fought to calm her mind. Any nervous twitch or sudden movement could be taken the wrong way. She used the Force to keep her heart beating slowly, her body cool, while the Jedi Master walked ever closer. A betraying bead of sweat started to form on her brow.

Max’s hands reached the blaster and Alex nearly breathed a sigh of relief. The man was carefully calm in the storm. She decidedly was not. This was a chance for her to find that calm. Alex gave the rebel what she hoped was a soft smile. “You have a good heart.” She kept her saber hilt on her belt as she walked through the door to the hallway. A part of her mind kept itself on the young rebel…just in case. It was not that she distrusted the outcome, but fear had made people do worse.

Once Alex and Max were alone in the hallway she reached out again in the Force. Yes, they had been given correct instructions. She started to move towards the room holding the hostages. The fear was a boiling wound in the Force. This was exactly what had Alex concerned. She turned toward Max as they walked. “Ideas?” She couldn’t exactly tell how many rebels surrounded the hostages, enough that they did not want to go blasting in. “Charging in blades swinging seems like a terrible plan.” Again, Alex was serviceable but did not want to test how many blasters bolts she could bat away in a matter of moments. They would likely do far more harm than good that way.

Max had been in situations like that before, where he had to rely on his instincts about people and nothing else. He had never quite so literally walked up to a blaster barrel and asked them, nicely, to put it away though. Though he had been in situations of similar levels of danger and he had walked away after convincing the other party that they really didn't want to go through with it.

The 'trick' was to believe that everyone had a level of goodness in them that could not be stamped out or otherwise tampered with; it was immutable. That and dealing with the instinctive fear that rose when someone pointed a deadly weapon in your direction and you had only your instincts telling you that they would be fine.

Arriving at the very solid armory doors, Max eyed them critically for a long moment as he thought about their approach. Thinking on it, he glanced at Alex.

"Do you know Morichro very well?"
he asked with a hum, "With it we should be able to incapacitate any armed guards within the holding area. It is very doubtful that they would have a large number of guards here while the local forces are amassing an assault."

The large armory doors loomed before the Jedi. Those certainly were ominous. Alex was still struggling to separate out the presences beyond the door. She mostly felt a huddled mass of fear. Her hand tentatively reached out to touch the door, her mind extending beyond. That helped some, but not much. Max was right. There weren’t a significant number of guards beyond the door, it was still far more than she was willing to risk. She withdrew her hand from the door to make eye contact with Max.

“Um, yes? I know the basic mechanics, but I haven’t worked the Force in such a way in a long time.” Alex allowed herself to sink more deeply into the Force. She wasn’t tiring yet. The Jedi Knight did not have the same level of skill as Max, which meant at some point she would reach a limit the Jedi Master would not. “I don’t posses the strength to touch their minds alone…” Alex reached out again in the Force. “I can’t manage to separate the rebels from the hostages.” She frowned in concentration, her brow furrowing. “Even if I could, I doubt I could submerge them all into unconsciousness.”

One deep breath. Connecting with other Jedi in the Force made her uncomfortable. It was not something she did frequently for a reason. She simply did not know her fellow Jedi well enough. Connecting in the Force was intimate, and that made Alex’s skin crawl. However, she knew the situation they were in. Her mind opened as she reached for Max in the Force. Her voice was slightly muted as she spoke. “Together?” She had to accept this as a learning experience. A chance for her to see how Max worked with the Fore. Don’t be weird Alex.
