When Leon woke, his ship had been in the tunnel of hyperspace for many an hour. Kalen stood guard over him and smiled softly when he noticed the pirate stirring. His wounds had been easy enough to treat, but that had done little to soothe the now former Jedi's anxiety. He eased into the empty spot next to Leon and smoothed the pirates hair back. "Not too fast, love. All is well. Rest for now."

Kalen turned back towards the wall of Leon's chambers. The HoloNet was flashing through various imagery there, though the volume was low so Leon could rest. Kalen grew more giddy with each moment Leon was awake. He couldn't seem to decide whether he wanted to fixate his gaze on Leon, who continued to come back to consciousness, or the HoloNet, which was proclaiming the news on each channel:

"You slept through it, Leo," he said when he could bear it no more. "The Jedi defeated the Empire over Jakku. The Emperor is dead. The Sith Order is decimated. The war is over."

It was an odd thing, to say those words. For as long as either one of them had been alive, the Jedi had fought the Sith. Now, it was really and truly over...

"They're even talking about a new Republic. Without the Empire, the galaxy needs new leadership." He paused. Then he glanced down at Leon and smiled. "As for us, what do you say we settle down somewhere far away from all of this? From the Jedi. From the Republic. From anything with eight legs." That made him snicker. "We could start again where no one could find us. Would you like that?"

Engines hummed and metal ached as the vessel shot through space. Leon could feel the ship beneath him shudder, the fan above him whir, and the warmth of the blanket wrapped around his bruised frame. It wasn’t until he shuffled against the bed and opened his eyes that he saw Kalen, smiling as he hovered above him. Unsurprisingly, he could tell the other man was stuffed with concern. Always egging him back to sleep, always making sure he was never alone. In most cases, Leon would find it bothersome or aggravating. After all, he hated being told what to do. But Kalen? He was the exception.

Leon drifted in and out of consciousness, pain still gnawing at his chest. Still, he was just glad his own blood and guts weren’t spilling out. At least, not anymore. In the end though, if he had to do it again, he would. Without hesitation. It wasn’t simply to avenge Genevieve’s home and family, or save the galaxy from some other outlying threat. Neither was it out of spite for that bitch of a queen. Instead, he did it for himself, for Kalen. And as grossly cliché as that sounds, Leon couldn’t give any less of a shit. Cliché or not, he loved Kalen, and he was willing to do anything to make sure he survived, even if it meant dying himself. Fortunately, luck was finally on his side on that fateful night.

Stirring back to life, Leon shuffled up against his pillow at the news. The Emperor was dead? The Empire destroyed? The war over? A wave of emotions flooded over him, and questions about what might transpire. Then, his eyes landed on Kalen, and he smiled. “Kalen, I—“ Before he could finish, a flash of golden hair wafted into the room. Blue eyes fluttered to face him, and again, Leon smiled. “Genevieve.” Her voice, loud and unrestrained, echoed throughout his chambers. “You’re awake! Oh good, oh good.” With a toothy grin fastened across her face, she tugged at him excitedly.

Not far behind her, Natalia poked through the door. Likewise, a bandaged Giles smirked over her shoulder. They were all together now, like some bizarre family. A little on the strange side though, but still a family. He could already picture it— Uncle Giles, Auntie Natalia. An exhausted Kalen chasing after Eve through some far-flung meadow and outside some remote cottage, all as he watched from the patio. Leon chuckled at the thought. Then, turning back to Kalen, he simply nodded his head. “You’re goddamn right I would.
