When it came to Ossus, the Jedi's history with the Outer Rim planet was long and nothing short of complicated. Not to mention bloody. Jesper would know. He'd sat through not one but two history classes today. On top of that, he had somehow managed not to fall asleep in either. Maybe there really was a first time for everything.

Thousands of years ago, the Jedi stored the sum of their knowledge upon the planet. Countless Jedi had met their end and become one with the force here, and the Jedi Temple had been reduced to nothing more than ash and rubble more than once. The Great Sith War, the Yuuzhan Vong War, the third Jedi Purge... Some were legends, some were fact. All meant that the planet held untold secrets.

More importantly than that, untold treasures.

It was no secret that Jesper was failing a few of his classes. For a little extra credit, one of his teachers allowed him to help out in the temple with various projects. The largest of these ongoing projects was a complete reorganization of the Jedi library on Ossus. All of Jesper's free time was begrudgingly spent amongst books and librarians older than the temple itself. It was a last ditch effort to improve his grades that was only partially successful, but it did result in an interesting discovery.

A leather-bound book—or journal, rather. Tucked away behind a shelf, torn and dusty and completely forgotten by the temple's attendants and students. The writer was a young and eager Knight signed Skip. One entry in particular proved interesting. Skip's Master had been slain by an unnamed Sith, and Skip had personally buried him "atop the mountain, with all of the treasures he had amassed."

There were unintentional clues to this burial location scattered through the journal entries, and like any good treasure hunter Jesper had enlisted the help of a partner.

Seated beneath a Dbergo tree outside of the Jedi Temple, Jesper waited for him, eager to start this little adventure of theirs before nightfall. He let out a quiet sigh, watching the wind push through the tree's long, overhanging red fronds.

Elidan walked happily toward the meeting place. His training to be a Jedi Knight was going well. He finally had a Master, who was also an excellent teacher. He had good grades in all his classes, even in Math and Physics! Spending so much time studying at the Library of Yavin IV was really a good idea.

Due to his good grades, the half-Sephi was appointed as one of the Monitors of the project of reconstruction of the Jedi Library of Ossus. Now he needed to supervise and help the other Padawans that were participating in it. With the help of the tribal Ysanna and other natives of the planet, it would not take much time until the Great Library would be totally functional again.

One of the other Padawans that were helping in the project was Jesper Trevil. Elidan didn’t interact much with him, only some brief moments while they sorted the archives that would be left in Ossus. However, the half-Sephi considered the other boy to be nice.

Apparently, Jesper found something that could guide them to some ancient Jedi treasure and asked Elidan’s help. The auburn-haired boy wondered why the other asked his help. Jesper could have asked any of the other Monitors, since all of them had the same free pass to take a transport and move around the planet. Anyway, the half-Sephi agreed. After all, someone would need to make the other Padawan stay away from trouble.

After reaching the place, Elidan saw Jesper sitting below a Dbergo tree. Smiling, the half-Sephi approached the other boy. He pulled his Datapad and typed a message on it. “Hey, Jesper! How are you today?” after showing it to the black-haired Padawan, he would type another one. “Where are we going exactly?

There were several reasons Jesper had invited Elidan on this little adventure in lieu of one of the other Padawans. For one thing, the Half-Sephi was what Jesper would deem a "goody two shoes." Not in an annoying or ostentatious way (Jesper had recently learned this word from one of the librarians), but there was no getting around this fact that Elidan did well in his studies and was well liked by the temple instructors.

When embarking on a potentially dangerous and detention-inducing adventure, it was wise to place yourself in the company of a well-educated "teacher's pet," as it were. It severely lessened the blow, should you get into trouble with your Jedi superiors.

Secondly, although Jesper didn't know him very well, Elidan struck him as down to earth. All of their interactions, though brief, had been pleasant. Elidan was one of the few Padawan Monitors that hadn't allowed the "power" of his position to go to his head.

They were temple Monitors for kriff's sake, not Jedi Master Voran herself. Elidan would make a good companion on this journey. Perhaps he'd even make a good friend. Making friends was an art, and Jesper had never been particularly gifted in that area. Although he might not admit it readily, he could use a friend.

At the sight of Elidan coming over the hill, Jesper scrambled to his feet, not bothering to brush any remaining dirt and grass from his clothing or calloused hands. Stretching to his full height, the sixteen year old still stood a good five inches shorter than his Jedi companion. Jesper tried not to let this bother him, however, jumping straight into the task at hand.

"Hello, Elidan. I was beginning to wonder if you'd ditched me." He grinned. "I'm glad you didn't."

From the grass beneath the Dbergo tree, the Padawan retrieved a rugged, aging leather bag packed to the gills with two shovels sticking out of the end. The bag was faded and torn, and it was a miracle that its seams did not burst and dump the contents unceremoniously onto the ground.

"Up there," Jesper answered Elidan's question, pointing toward the mountains ahead with a gleam in his gray eyes. He was excited. He'd missed this— the mystery, the thrill of the hunt. "I hope you brought enough supplies? We might be up there a couple of days."

He continued. "Well, if you didn't, it's fine. I think I brought enough for the two of us." The teenager slung the faded bag's strap over his shoulder, glancing toward the sky. The sun had just begun to disappear behind the rocks overhead. "We'd better get started. We don't want to waste daylight."

Elidan watched Jesper get up from where he was sitting. Even if he didn’t know much about the other boy, the half-Sephi had heard several rumors about him. For future defenders of peace, he was still surprised how the younglings and padawans liked gossip. Some were so bizarre that it was impossible to be true.

However, at least one of these rumors seemed to be true. The one about Jesper liking to explore ancient things. In a place like Ossus, famous for having ancient artifacts buried on it, the other Padawan was probably excited to go exploring.

I promised that I was going to help you, I will never turn back on a promise.” Elidan smiled at the other boy. For him, promises were something sacred. Looking at Jesper’s bag, the half-Sephi wondered if it would resist this trip. It was so torn that it seemed that at any moment it would burst.

But, who was him to judge it? His own bag was faded and a bit torn. Being an orphan, Elidan only had the money that the Order gave for children with his condition. It wasn’t that much, so he needed to live with cheap and hand me down things. The bag that he was carrying probably had at least five years.

I think so. I brought everything that you said and some supplies that we can use.” Elidan had no idea of how long they were going to stay out of the Temple, so he had brought food and water that would last for some days. With most of the planet being a great desert, it would be nearly impossible to find these two things.

Then, let’s go.” Elidan would smile at Jesper, before following him. While he did it, the half-Sephi remembered the last time that he went on a trip alone with another Padawan. Hopefully, this time no problem was going to happen.

Jesper stared over his shoulder, nonplussed by such an odd but seemingly sincere remark. Gray eyes darted between Elidan's pale face and the datapad he held in his hand, unsure how to respond to that. Teenagers weren't usually so... sincere or open. The Kesselian supposed he shouldn't be surprised. Jedi Padawans weren't like other teenagers. That was sort of the point, wasn't it?

"Good to know," he would eventually settle on a reply, grinning back at the teenager. "Now I know I can trust you not to stab me in the back once we find the gold, huh?"

He used the term 'gold' loosely. More than likely, this burial tomb had been lost to mother nature and the mountains forever. Or it had already been looted by raiders and fortune hunters. Or perhaps even the Sith themselves. Jesper let his imagination run wild. It was possible that there were still Sith on the planet—a small remnant searching for this ancient Jedi tomb in the hunt for artifacts of untold power and wealth. The teenager all but licked his lips at the wild idea but quickly found himself grounded firmly in reality once again.

Reality was a miserable place to be.

Jesper and Elidan would be lucky to even find the tomb, much less strike it rich. This Jedi Master buried with 'all of the treasures he had amassed' probably consisted of nothing more than a few baubles and a Gungan romance novel or something.

"Here's the journal I told you about. I thought only girls kept diaries," Jesper would say after a few minutes of silence, tossing the old, dwindling journal to Elidan to see. "There's clues scattered throughout the entries as to his master's burial location. The first hint I could find was 'high above the forked river.'"

The Padawan readjusted his bag, the handle cutting into his shoulder. "But what do you make of it?" he asked, curious to hear Elidan's thoughts.

Jesper comment about gold made Elidan stare at him, wondering if the other Padawan really thought that they were going to find it at the tomb. If it was the burial place of a Jedi Master, even one that lived during the Old Republic, such riches would not be found. After all, the Order always was against the accumulation of wealth.

However, they could still find some interesting artifacts. If the person buried there was really a Jedi Master, they could have collected much knowledge during the time that they traveled through the Galaxy. They could even find an ancient lightsaber or a holocron. Any of it would be a good acquisition for the Archives, since there are more things to help understand the past of the Jedi Order.

The half-Sephi grabbed the journal that Jesper tossed to him and opened it. For something so old, it still was in a good condition. The pages were yellow, but the letters were still legible. Elidan was surprised that no one had found it before or that the insects didn’t eat the pages. There were some images painted on it, which the auburn-haired boy couldn’t identify their meaning.

Elidan stopped reading and turned to Jesper. “They aren’t the only one. I have a diary, too. Does it make me a girl or less man?” he asked the other Padawan. He wasn’t mad, only wanted to show to the other boy that this conclusion had no sense. After what happened on Ajan Kloss, Asadra had suggested that he should make one as a way to relieve stress and keep his thoughts organized. He had agreed and since then, the half-Sephi would write everything that happens during his day, including what he was learning during his lessons and training sessions.

After Jesper told him the hind that he had found, Elidan tried to think what it could mean. “Not too far away from there is a hill near a dry riverbed. I read that this hill used to make the river become forked. We could start looking there.” the half-Sephi wasn’t certain if this interpretation was true, but it was their best option at the moment.
