The Jedi Order was a monastic religious order devoted to the light side of the Force and heralded as keepers of the peace. The Jedi Order's history stretched back thousands of years, predating the genesis of the Republic and its dark side rivals: the Sith Empire. The Jedi were headquartered on the Deep Core world of Tython, but the Order possessed a number of temples and enclaves spread across the known galaxy. The Jedi were the natural enemies of the Sith Order, the Hutt Cartel, and the Zygerrian Slave Empire.

Description

Overview

Founded on a forgotten world in the Unknown Regions, the Jedi Order was a monastic group that was formed to study the Force, specifically the light side of the Force. Thousands of years ago, the Jedi began a long journey coreward, temporarily settling the distant world of Ellora. They eventually continued their long pilgrimage and settled the Deep Core world of Tython.

Following the resettlement on Tython, the Jedi Order evolved beyond just studying the light side of the Force. With the development of lightsabers, the Jedi took on a new role as Jedi Knights: the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy. With their new dedication towards helping all life in the galaxy, the Jedi Knights offered their services as diplomats, investigators, scholars, and healers to whichever world or government called out to them for help. When the Republic was formed in the Core Worlds, this made them natural allies. The Jedi Code and Nine Tenants were developed to govern the Order into this new era and their new responsibilities.

The Jedi Order's membership were divided decisively into four ranks. Jedi Knights made up the majority of the Order's numbers. They were full-fledged members of the Jedi Order and were also fully trained Force users. The most powerful and wise Jedi Knights were put through the Trials of Mastery and, if they passed, became Jedi Masters. Masters were seen as the leaders of the Order and were responsible for training and acting as examples for the younger generation. The Order was governed by twelve Masters who made up the Jedi High Council. The Council elected one of their own to lead council matters and named that Jedi the Master of the Order. The Jedi Grand Master served as the overall leader of the Order.

Locations

The Jedi Order primarily occupied temples and enclaves across the galaxy. Temples were the sights of meditation, study, training, rest, and reflection for members of the Order. They also acted as homes for most of the Jedi in the Order. Enclaves were used for similar purposes, but were primarily embassies or chapter houses that represented the Jedi Order's interests on a planet. Both temples and enclaves were led by the local Jedi Masters and might be governed by smaller satellite councils, all of whom reported to the Jedi High Council.

Jedi temples, unless specifically specified otherwise, were open to both Jedi and non-Jedi personnel. However, any non-Jedi who wanted to enter a Jedi temple or enclave were stripped of weaponry and devices, and were forced to undertake an entrance exam. They were also heavily guarded locations, crawling with Jedi Temple Guards specifically trained to deal with those who might seek to harm a temple or plunder its hidden knowledge.

History

Origins and the First Great Schism

nQrhrcg.png
For thousands of years the Jedi Order has existed. Founded by the Prime Jedi and born on the watery world of Ahch-To, the wisdom and knowledge of the Jedi was revered and respected throughout the galaxy, their reputation as philosophers, scholars, and sages widespread. Their accomplishments as warriors and peacekeepers equally respected by the peace loving denizens of the galaxy, and feared by those with more ill intent towards their fellow sentients. The Jedi Order was united in their devotion to the Force, and through the Force devoted to preserve peace and prosperity throughout the galaxy.

But not all agreed, feeling that their powers could be used for so much more. Delving deep into the mysteries of the Force, these malcontents discovered that when fueled by their negative emotions, and commanded, that the Force could be twisted to their will. Believing they had discovered the pathway to true power in the force, these Dark Jedi explored the deepest depths of the darkside, seeking to command power over life itself. Their commitment to the darkside was rewarded with unnatural power, which they sought to turn towards conquest.

Coexisting for years, uneasiness and tension increased between the Jedi of the Lightside, and the Jedi of the Darkside. The Dark Jedi had become arrogant, violent, and unpredictable. The Jedi became worried that these dissenters would be consumed by the power that they wielded. Likewise the Dark Jedi believed that the Jedi of the Light were weak and prone to indecision. The tensions grew until a conclave was called on Ahch-To, the wisest and most devoted Jedi Masters of the loosely organized order gathering in the first Jedi Council. It was there that the Jedi Council forbade the usage of the Darkside of the Force, excommunicating those that clung to its power.

Banishing the Dark Jedi, exiling them to the far Outer Rim, the newly structured Jedi Order let the Exiles pass from their mind, perceiving them to no longer be a threat to the Order or the known galaxy. Turning their attention to the infrastructure of the order, they began to construct temples, libraries, and training facilities on their holy worlds, most notably Tython, Ossus, and Jedha. The Jedi Order nearly doubled in size. During this time, rumors of chaos in the Outer Rim, far galactic South, found their way to the Jedi. Filled with uncertainty, all but a handful chose inaction, preferring to continue to maintain the peace in the Republic and more civilized worlds, deeming the worlds in the far outer rim too primitive or corrupt to make their efforts worth the risk.

The Hundred-Year Darkness

It was with horrified shock that the Jedi watched as an onslaught of abominations and Dark Jedi poured out of the Outer Rim, burning and enslaving as they came. Many Jedi, feeling guilt over their previous inaction, threw themselves into battle to save and protect those that they could. Thousands of Jedi died during the initial invasion, their unorganized efforts valiant but foolhardy and ultimately wasteful. Calling an emergency conclave, the only one since they had decided to cast out the Dark Jedi, the Jedi Council reorganized the Jedi Order once more, creating a militant arm known as the Jedi Guardians. This newly created army marched into battle alongside the freshly minted Grand Army of the Republic, beginning a slowly losing campaign that would see the two allies slowly pushed back to the temple on Tython itself.

qeSEDbb.png
The Battle of Tython could be considered one of the bloodiest battles of the war. Fleets burned in the void around the planet and its two moons, while force storms raged wherever armies clashed on the surface, the planet own environment attempting to reject the invaders and defenders alike. In an elaborate scheme, the Grand Master of the Order, Nargha Atassi, a cunning warrior who had led many campaigns against the enemy and knew their way of battle, devised a plan to cripple the armies of the Exiles. In a valiant act of self sacrifice, the Grand Master and an army of Jedi and Republic volunteers defended the temple from the ravenous hordes of abominations and fallen Jedi while the rest of the Jedi and Republic forces retreated. It can only be assumed that the defenders fought bravely, as nobody who was present at the battle survived. Once the Grand Master had three of the Exile Warlords engaged in melee, he brought the temple down, crumbling the building. The subsequent toll of death triggered a cataclysmic force storm that wracked the surface of the planet, destroying much of the Exiles army of abominations.

With their enemy on the retreat, a joint campaign was launched between the Jedi and the Republic to drive the Exiles from the core, and eventually out of the Republic as well. The Exiles had nowhere to run to, no bases established in its scorched earth campaign. The Jedi’s campaign forced the Exiles slowly out of Republic space. The Exiles only left devastation and despair in their wake as they burned and slaved their way out of the Republic, rebuilding their armies of slaves as quickly as they were thrown into the meat grinder of a retreating war. The Jedi had the advantage however, the slave armies were nothing like the ones of the past. No more did stim fueled berserkers or force twisted abominations to fill the ranks of the Exile armies, only scared men caught between death on the field of battle or death by the hands of their new masters.

With the Exiles cast out of Republic space in full retreat, the Republic Senate, their worlds suffering, having throwing generation after generation into the war, voted to end the war, disbanding their armies to turn their focus on rebuilding from the damage caused by The Great Jedi Civil War, as some had begun to deem it. An anti-Jedi sentiment began to grow within the Republic, and even as the Jedi Guardians chased the Exiles into the Outer Rim, they would find themselves no longer welcome within the Republic.

The Tragedy at Ilum

With both of their armies defeated or disbanded, the scope of the war shifted from grand planet wide engagements to skirmishes and small battles that saw the Exiles continually pushed back. Their numbers seemed to thin considerably, the Jedi gaining a few easy victories before the word came. The Exiles had assembled and invaded the holy world of Ilum, a strike to the spiritual heart of the Order. The Jedi Guardians rushed to their sacred planets defense, and met the Exiles in what would be one of the bloodiest, and likely the last major clash of the waning years of the war. Under the eerie crimson glow of a massive, bleeding kyber crystal, the two armies met.

Leading a strike force through the enemy lines, Grand Master Syresh Lapar and a group of some of the best warriors the Jedi Guardians pushed their way to the crystal, where they found a ritual being performed upon the crystal by the last Warlord of the Exiles. After a bloody clash between some of the most powerful force wielders on both sides of the war, Grand Master Syresh Lapar cut down Overlord Melchior, ending the conflict. But then the unthinkable happened. In a sudden and ferocious act of betrayal, Syresh Lapar cut down the surviving Jedi strike team while they thought victory was at hand. With the crystal glowing with the dark side, Syresh Lapar unleashed the power trapped within, the destructive dark side energies bursting forth onto the battlefield and across the planet. The waves of death were indiscriminate and random, killing Jedi and Exiles in droves.

The "Shadow War" and the Second Great Schism

After what would seem as an eternity to the survivors, the power of the crystal subsided, its energies spent. Both armies had been decimated, and the few survivors of both sides wasted no time in fleeing the battlefield. The battle crippled the Jedi Guardians and the Order splintered once again in the aftermath of such defeat and betrayal. The surviving Jedi Guardians, following their General and Councilor Cadef Sige, retreated to the holy world of Jedha, thought to be one of the first crystal worlds of the Jedi, to lick their wounds and recover their strength. Many Jedi felt this was not the path they were meant to walk however, leaving the Guardians to rebuild the worlds destroyed by the war and to recover the knowledge on the mysteries of the force that were lost during the decades of conflict. Many however, continued to take action; some pressing the attack in small skirmishes bloody ambushes; taking to the shadows and hunting their enemy down one by one, and others allies and lost knowledge with which to finish the war.

PSFcFec.png
A deadly shadow war ensued and, for many years, the galaxy attempted to rebuild while the Jedi Shadows and the Dark Jedi assassins fought for a final conclusion to the conflict in the background. In the midst of this conflict, a young girl named Alais Drast became a Jedi Knight. Charismatic in nature, Drast drew quite a following in the Order, but ultimately began to experiment with the dark side of the Force. This drew the ire of the Jedi Council and, after a series of unfortunate events, she was put on trial and judged guilty. However, before she could be stripped of the Force and exiled, she murdered Jedi Council member Master Ryell Vao together with her co-conspirator, Jedi Master Kal Vox. The two fled Ossus and the Jedi Order in the aftermath. Alais's trial, and its outcome, once again splintered the Jedi Order in what became known as the Second Great Schism. Alais restylized herself as "Andraste" and became the Overlord of the Jedi Exiles, drawing dozens of Jedi away from the Order and into her cause in the process. With her newfound power, Andraste destroyed the Jedi temple on Devaron, forcing the Jedi to respond by attacking the Exile fortress on Prakith. The battle there drove the surviving Exiles deep into the Outer Rim Territories where they encountered the Sith species and slowly morphed into the Sith Empire.

As the Sith rose, they continued their century-long conflict with the Jedi Order. One-by-one, the Jedi Council began to fall until all that remained were Jedi Masters Shivaaga, Corliss, and Wyck. Cadef Sige was elected the Jedi Grand Master around the same time, but his reign was short, as a betrayal on Jedha led to the Skyward Sword, a recently obtained Jedi frigate, turning on the Order and destroying the Jedha temple's hangar (which killed Sige in the process). Sige's death finally propelled the remnants of the Jedi Order into action. Masters Fennex Zeerda and Jon Atreides led an expedition to reclaim Ellora: an ancient Jedi world in the Unknown Regions. Meanwhile, Jedi Master Imani Sage led a successful effort to reclaim the Jedi heart-world Tython, in the Deep Core.

Despite these victories, Andraste still successfully bombarded the Holy City of Jedha, leveling the Jedi temple there in the process. Around the same time, Jedi Master Wyck declared himself Sige's successor as Grand Master of the Jedi Order and gave a rousing speech from Tython, promising to reclaim the Order's lost temples, right the wrongs of the past century, and restore the Jedi Order to its former glory.

Jedi Programs

In the past, the Jedi Order was divided into six sects. When Grand Master Wyck seized the reigns of the Order, these sects were abolished in favor of a unified Jedi Order. However, the spirit of some of these sects lived on in the form of Jedi programs, meant to harness the usefulness of these sects while maintaining the Order's unity. Not all Jedi fell into a program, as some chose to simply be regular Knights and Masters; but some chose to specialize and joined the programs anyways.

Shadow Corps

Q4lK5vD.png
The Shadow Corps was an initiative under the control of the Council of First Knowledge. This program trained Jedi Shadows: Jedi specialized in the location and destruction of dark side artifacts and paraphernalia, as well as the protection of Jedi knowledge and wisdom. The Jedi Shadows of this new program were composed of the remaining Shadows, as well as the Jedi Sentinels, of old, and were trained specifically to despise the dark side of the Force in every form it took. As a result, Shadows were zealously devoted to the light side and had a single goal: the complete and total annihilation of the dark side and everything associated with it.

Shadows were additionally used as back-up muscle for guarding Jedi libraries and archives. They were the chosen secret weapons of the Council of First Knowledge and were often dispatched to retrieve and document lost Jedi knowledge and destroy any knowledge associated to the Jedi Exiles or the Sith. Because of this, their chosen skillset often made them the direct opposites of the Sith assassins and they were frequently mistaken as "Jedi assassins," as a result.

Peacekeeper Corps

rO2osCF.png
The Peacekeeper Corps were a revamping of the ancient tradition of training Jedi Temple Guards. The new Temple Guard program drew from the Sentinel and Jedi Guardian sects, at first, but later allowed all Jedi Knights to enlist. Jedi Temple Guards were the Jedi Order's elite security force, tasked with guarding its temples and enclaves from any that would harm it. They were also tasked to be the Order's own internal police force. Temple Guards took the ultimate vow of anonymity: they sacrificed personal fame and recognition in service to the Order and the Force, donning a ceremonial robe and mask to conceal their individual identities.

Temple Guards specialized in lightsaber combat and were trained in the very basics of all lightsaber combat styles, even the most rare and bizarre styles. They were also trained to resolve disputes and capture perpetrators, killing only as a last resort. All were given special yellow kyber crystals to empower their lightsabers, giving the Guards their signature golden blades, but, on rare occasions, Guards were known to possess blue blades instead. Temple Guards famously wielded double-bladed lightsabers, known as "lightsaber pikes," but they were permitted to wield single-hilt weapons as well.

The Temple Guard Initiative fell under the purview of Jedi Command: the military branch of the Jedi Order and one of the lower councils that oversaw Jedi activity. Service in the Guard was optional, though the Order could conscript Knights to serve in the Guard in times of need, and was temporary unless the candidate chose otherwise. To serve in the Guard was considered a great honor and Jedi who voluntarily served were generally viewed more highly by the Order due to their trustworthiness and commitment to the Order above all else. Jedi Temple Guards who became more specialized were often dispatched to other planets to reinforce local police and security forces. These Guards continued to don the regalia of the Temple Guard, but were stylized as Jedi Peacekeepers.

Medical Corps

tZuq8bM.png
The Medical Corps, or MedCorp, was formed from the remnants of the Jedi Consulars and were Jedi trained to use their considerable and abundant knowledge of the Force to heal the sick and wounded. They were given extensive medical training, as well, allowing them to act as first responders and trained medical professionals in addition to sage healers. They were the smallest Jedi program, but, some would argue, the most important—especially during times of conflict in the galaxy.

Members of the Medical Corps were known as Jedi Healers. Healers staffed the medical wings of most Jedi temples, and enclaves had at least one healer on hand to serve their smaller Jedi community. Some more proficient healers also founded their own healing temples, which acted as large hospitals and places for spiritual healing. These temples were often built over sites incredibly powerful in the light side of the Force, which aided in the healing process.

The Medical Corps were traditionally independent of the smaller councils and were directly governed by the Jedi High Council. However, during times of war, command of the Corps was transferred to Jedi Command, as their services were often required on the battlefield. During wartime, Jedi healers were frequently dispatched on high-risk missions, or as part of Jedi strike teams, to keep the team in good health in the event of lengthy and dangerous missions. They often played a supportive role in combat and hung back from the fighting so that they could supply their techniques to their combative partners. They were also stationed on Jedi cruisers and commanded the medbays therein. Many Sage Masters hail from the Medical Corps.

Diplomatic Corps

DT8XMOp.png
The Diplomatic Corps were formed from the remnants of the Jedi Emissaries. Under the leadership of the Council of Reconciliation, the Diplomatic Corps produced new Jedi Ambassadors: Jedi trained to represent the Order to foreign governments and outside powers. Ambassadors were well-rounded in the ways of the Force and lightsaber, but their education was specifically focused on matters of galactic history and politics.

Members of the Diplomatic Corps were common on worlds like Coruscant, which were the focal point of their government's politics and diplomacy. They were also the first choices to be dispatched to resolve hostile situations, such as hostage and terror crisis. They also were frequently called upon by outside political forces to act as advisors due to their vast knowledge of galactic history and the cultural practices of the galaxy's various species. When the Jedi Order was required to sign treaties or consider proposals, the High Council and the Council of Reconciliation would work together, but the Jedi Ambassadors were always the ones to negotiate the terms on behalf of the Jedi Order.

Ambassadors were often also well-informed in matters of military strategy and were deployed into warzones in which the Jedi Order could not be directly involved. They worked to advise the rulers or military personal of the worlds they were dispatched to with the goals of seeking peaceful resolutions to those conflicts.

Jedi Philosophy

Jedi Code

There are two versions of the Jedi Code, both of which are equally valid guidelines for Jedi Knights to operate with. Indeed, many scholars argue that this dual code exists in order to prevent any misinterpretation of any singular code:

Emotion, yet peace. / There is no emotion, there is peace.
Ignorance, yet knowledge. / There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
Passion, yet serenity. / There is no passion, there is serenity.
Chaos, yet harmony. / There is no chaos, there is harmony.
Death, yet the force. / There is no death; there is the Force.

Emotion, yet peace.
Happiness, love, anger, resentment, fear, and excitement; these are all examples of emotion. No emotion is inherently bad or wrong in any way, and we recognize this, but as a Jedi you must learn to control your emotions. Your emotions can cloud your judgement and potentially cause you to make hasty decisions without properly thinking them through. You must transcend your emotions and come to a place of inner peace. To have emotions is not a sign of weakness. In letting your emotions control you, therein lies the failing.

Ignorance, yet knowledge.
Everyone has a capacity for ignorance in some form or another. It is the duty of a Jedi Knight to continue to educate oneself and each other. This process is never-ending, as no one has attained all the knowledge of the universe except those who are one with the Force. Remain vigilant and know that you are not all-knowing. There is still much to learn. The path of the Jedi is a path of learning.

Passion, yet serenity.
Passions are fed by emotions, and they can cloud your judgement in the present circumstance. Passion can range from devotion to a much more sinister notion of being governed by emotion. Always act with an even temper and act according to the will of the Force. Always question yourself when overwhelmed with passion, as you risk submitting to the pull of the dark side. A calm mind is a mind guided by the light.

Chaos, yet harmony.
It is undeniable that sometimes things just go awry, or at least appear to. And while this is true, a Jedi Knight understands that all events are interconnected and are simply part of life. Tragedies and failings are inevitable. It is how we deal with them that matters, and, as a Jedi, you should take such things in stride. Learn to rise above the chaos and understand the role you play in bringing balance to the Force. Understand that the Force is with you, always.

Death, yet the Force.
Death is a natural part of life. Jedi can be killed, and often are in times of war. However, death is not a tragedy, but a necessary part of the life cycle. Without death, life could not exist. They balance each other out. When we die, we are just passing into another realm of existence. We become one with the Force.

The Nine Tenants

The Jedi Order is guided by two basic doctrines: the Jedi Code, and the Nine Tenets. While the Jedi Code is steadfast and timeless, the Jedi Order recognizes the need to create the tenets after expelling the dark Jedi from their Order. The Tenets were set down during the first conclave of the Jedi Council on Ahch-To, and modified during the second conclave with the formation of the Jedi Guardians, in order to discourage actions that might lead Jedi down the path to the darkside. Many now consider the tenets to be outdated however, having been set down almost a hundred years ago, with the different Sects of the Jedi interpreting them differently to further their own goals

Jedi are the guardians of peace, justice, and order in the galaxy. We fight for all life, no matter how intelligent or how unintelligent, no matter how big or how small, no matter how significant or insignificant on a galactic scale. We defend civilization, as well as the freedoms and liberties of all people. The galaxy’s safety is the priority of the Jedi, and we will ally with those that align with our efforts to restore peace.

Emotions are unavoidable, but lessons may be learned from the feeling of these emotions. However, emotions of such strength as to cause a Jedi to act or behave in a manner different from rational thought are dangerous, and must be avoided at all costs for a Jedi to truly master the Force.

rxfJfe2t.png
Feelings of attraction and love are not to be explored. Jedi are known to observe a strict code of ethics that forbids the formation of material attachments and individual bonds. Violating these doctrines can be grounds for being exiled from the Order. A Jedi must not explore the realm of marriage, for love is dangerous. Attachment leads to the dark side, and to commit to the way of the Jedi means giving up personal desires and living for the benefit of all life.

The Jedi are to respect life, in any form, and only take life when necessary. Taking the life of an individual who has embraced the darkside can be considered necessary, for if left alive a darksider is a potential threat to all. A Jedi must put the needs of the community over the needs of individuals. A Jedi is not to act for solely personal gain or greed - the good of all must be the goal of a Jedi.

A Jedi is to protect the weak and defenseless. A Jedi may not kill a defenseless individual. An individual who has embraced the dark side of the force is never to be considered defenseless, for the darkside is a weapon in its own right. Should a Jedi be in a position where aid may be given to the weak or the poor, then the Jedi should do what they can to aid the situation within the guidelines of the Code, the Tenets, and the law.

The Jedi Council exists as the leading party of the Jedi Order, a committee to decide the direction and law of the Jedi Order. Jedi may disagree with the Jedi Council but they must never openly oppose it, for we have seen the dangers in open opposition. Jedi are free, however, to make personal decisions on their own, so long as they do not conflict with the standing Jedi policy.

Ruling power and financial wealth are not permitted for a Jedi, as these lead to arrogance and self-pride. Self-pride is a complex that eats the heart and mind of all, including Jedi. If a Jedi thinks he or she is greater than other beings, equal to other beings, or less than other beings then they have succumbed to self-pride. Guard against these three complexes night and day.

A Jedi must consider the living and cosmic manifestations of the Force - one must be mindful of the present, but also look to both the future and the past for guidance.

A Jedi does not fight for adventure or glory. A Jedi fights for the survival of civilization and the survival of the people within it. The greatest Jedi is not the one who defeats an army of thousands, but the one who triumphs over himself. Your importance lies in your devotion to life.

Jedi Ranks

TO9wTqs.png
Jedi Knight

A Jedi Knight was a full-fledged member of the Jedi Order: completely trained in the ways of the Force and of the lightsaber. The skills and talents of each Knight were as diverse as the Jedi Order itself, and many chose to specialize within one of the Order's equally various programs as a result of this. They were also the most numerous of the Jedi and served as the foot-soldiers and the frontline of the Order's efforts to keep the galaxy free of all darkness.

Jedi Knights had the lowest security clearance of any rank in the Jedi Order. They required permission to launch any ship, beyond their own personal craft. They also required authorization from the relevant authorities to access the Jedi Archives or certain locations within the various Jedi temples and enclaves.

Jedi Master

Jedi Master was a rank granted to those Jedi who had proven themselves both powerful and responsible leaders in the Jedi Order. Each Knight had to apply for and pass the Trials of Mastery to achieve the rank of Master. Masters were as diverse as their Knight counterparts, in both skill and ability, and were looked up to as what a Jedi should aspire to be. They also frequently made students of Knights in order to prepare the younger Jedi for the trials ahead. Some Jedi Masters were chosen to sit the lower councils of the Jedi Order, such as the Council of First Knowledge or Jedi Command.

Jedi Masters had mid-level security clearance. They could access the Jedi Archives freely, requiring only permission from the Council of First Knowledge to access the restricted sections of the Archives and/or the holocron vaults. They could also be given assignments which granted them command over larger ships, but they still could only launch personal ships without direct permission.

Jedi Council

sl3e77V.png
The Jedi High Council was composed of twelve Jedi Masters, one of which was the Grand Master, and acted as the governing body of the Jedi Order. Council members were selected by a vote of the Council's existing members and were widely regarded as the Order's most wise and powerful Jedi. Jedi Council members had greater authority than other Jedi Masters. They often chaired the lower councils and dictated those lower council's actions. However, they could not make unilateral decisions for the entire Jedi Order. Only a majority vote of the Council or a direct command from the Grand Master could set the Order's agenda.

Jedi Council members had high-level security clearance. They could access the Jedi Archive's restricted section and holocron vault freely. They could also launch ships of any class from the Order's designated hangars. They could also be given direct command over the Order's largest vessels. They could not, however, move around Jedi fleets without a unilateral vote of the Jedi Council.

Grand Master

The Grand Master was the Council-elected leader of the Jedi Order. Once elected, the Grand Master held their position for life or until retirement. The Grand Master was usually the wisest and most powerful Jedi in the Order and had direct authority over the Jedi Council and every member of the Jedi Order.

The Grand Master had the highest level of security clearance in the Order. He or she could freely access the Order's archives and holocrons without restriction. The Grand Master could also order the launch of any ship belonging to the Order and move about Jedi fleets as he saw fit. Usually, the Grand Master did not make such moves without the consent of the Council, but, on occasions, the Grand Master was forced to use his authority to make unilateral decisions for the Order.

A Note on Padawans

Jedi Knight is the base rank for the Jedi, as the Jedi Order abolished the rank of Padawan during the Third Conclave of the Jedi Council after the Battle of Tython, in desperation to bolster the ranks of the Guardians. Players are allowed and encouraged to start their Jedi as fully trained Jedi Knights, though they may opt to write a less experienced/trained Jedi Knight if they so choose. Typical Jedi training varies based on the circumstances regarding the discovery of an individuals force sensitivity. Those discovered as younglings would likely have gone through a more standardized training period regarding the force and lightsaber combat, growing up as a part of the Jedi Order hidden away at sanctuary training academies. Many of these academies locations have been lost, though they still diligently train what pupils they have in hiding, wary of broadcasting their location out of fear of invasion. These young Jedi are usually knighted around the ages of 14-16, though some outliers may occur.

Those Jedi who are discovered at older ages will be given an accelerated training period, usually lasting no more than two years as they are prepared for the rigors of combat and the challenges of being a Jedi. The accelerated training is rigorous and rather thorough, covering as much material as possible in such a short period of time. Areas of study are lightsaber combat, hand-to-hand combat, force use, and Jedi philosophy. Many Jedi who are given accelerated training may also be trained in a variety of other practical skills depending on the skills of their teachers. Many feel this training period to be lacking, believing that those who are taken on at too old of an age have greater risk of falling in battle or being seduced by the darkside. Due to these concerns a freshly knighted Jedi may be assigned a fellow Jedi Knight or sometimes even a Jedi Master to continue their training on a case by case basis. Many Jedi Knights also choose to serve as mentors for their fellow Jedi Knights to supplement their accelerated training, oftentimes forming a lasting bond of friendship as they encounter hardships and overcome challenges together.
