THE LOST CROWNS OF TION

The Lost Crowns of Tion is a collection of royal heraldry which dates back to the time of Xim the Despot. Collected by Xim over the course of his conquest of the Tion Cluster, the Lost Crowns were confiscated from the royal houses of planets which resisted Xim's control. They served as trophies of the despot's many victories, but also had a more practical purpose; without these items, the royal houses which had opposed Xim were not able to coronate heirs to their respective thrones, robbing them of legitimacy and thus - in theory - preventing them from fomenting rebellion against their new overlord.

The Lost Crowns of Tion is a diverse collection, representing the noble houses and traditions of hundreds of worlds. The items range from simple pendants of volcanic glass, to crowns and circlets of lustrous aurodium, bracers, necklaces, combs, scepters, masterwork weapons, even small spacecraft. Nearly every sort of item which a ruler might use to represent the inheritance of power - from the mundane to the bizarre - is represented.

During his reign, Xim kept his collection of royal heraldry separate from his other treasures. Knowing that they represented a significant portion of his authority, he kept them hidden, bringing them out only when his possession of the items was questioned. Upon his apparent death at the Third Battle of Vontor, however, the collection disappeared, whisked even deeper into hiding by forces loyal to the slain despot even as his empire began to collapse. In spite of the efforts of generations of scholars and treasure hunters over the millennia, the Lost Crowns of Tion have remained just that.

Some have claimed that this may be a blessing in disguise, however. Over thousands of years, many planets in the Tion Cluster have replaced their original nobility, or have done without; should the lost heraldry be brought back, however, it may give the remnants of previously defunct royal houses on hundreds of worlds a renewed claim to the throne, potentially sparking succession crises and civil wars.
