The New Republic

History

The fall of the Galactic Republic into the first Galactic Empire was met with a Rebellion to restore the Republic. A generation of Imperialism broke the old ways of how a Republic could work in the Galaxy. When the Rebellion triumphed over the Emperor's Death Stars and restored the Republic, things had to be different. A New Republic was founded in hopes to fix the mistakes of the past, but they were met with heavy opposition from the First Order the hidden Sith Order. The destruction of Hosnian and the war that followed shattered the progress that had been made.

After the final death of Emperor Palpatine and the destruction of the Sith Order and First Order, the galaxy found cause for celebration but they knew it would never be the same again. The New Republic was still fractured from the war with the First Order, with its size greatly diminished. Many worlds that formerly encompassed the New Republic opted to stay independent, although the prosperous Core Worlds would still mostly fall firmly in the Republic and maintain close ties with other worlds. While maintaining its independence, the New Republic allied itself with the newly formed Free Worlds Alliance to make sure no threats like Palpatine could ever come to power again. What separates the New Republic from the FWA is their history and traditional focus on more core-ward planets. The New Republic is more of a unified whole that pushes much of their laws onto their planets rather than being an alliance of free worlds.

Currently, the New Republic is a large member of the Galactic Senate and close ally of the Free Worlds Alliance. The capitol of the New Republic rotates every year between key member worlds that have infrastructure to host the Senate.


Law Enforcement and Military

The laws of the New Republic are upheld by the Sector Rangers: highly trained law enforcement officials whose Rangers are not restricted by jurisdiction. Keeping with their mission of safeguarding freedom and rights for sentients across the galaxy, they will also pursue crimes outside of New Republic space, going as far as the Outer Rim to foil heinous crimes such as slavery. They operate independently, but are subject to oversight from the New Republic while operating within their space or pursuing criminals in their name.

Each member world maintains it's own army and navy for defense purposes. There is no central power for the military currently. The Chancellor of the Republic can rally the member world forces into an emergency military for defense purposes only, and the New Republic Senate can vote for a formal military to be formed if a need arises. A small force of soldiers and fleet members are maintained by the Senate for protection detail as well.

Apologies for the delay in getting in reviewing this. Since it was posted after this, i see in the write-up here they are allies, but I'd stress that as of the Galactic Senate formation that the Free Worlds and New Republic are separate entities. They can have good relations but they are separate.

Also, I know you are the Byss senator, but can you give some reasoning as to why Byss would have a key government complex? In Legends, Byss is a dangerous place to travel to in addition to being part of the Deep Core (which itself is a dangerous region of space). If the New Republic wanted key government facilities in the Deep Core I'd imagine they put them on Empress Teta sooner (which by contrast, has ancient hyperlane routes to it and was an ancient member of the Republic in Legends iirc). It does seem odd.
