Time was a fluid substance. It no longer flowed like it used to. Even if she concentrated, the pieces never fell together in the right order. It was if nothing and everything had happened since the destruction of the Ranger Headquarters. She was still the same woman. Stuck in the past. Alone. Tired, yet she had spent more time asleep than awake in the weeks after. In spite of her doctor’s guidance, she’d taken twice the prescribed amount of sleep medication. It made the world into a lukewarm, bearable haze. Squinting through to see the other side would take too much effort. Bast would simply stay. Be.

The woman looked out her window. Rain penetrated the deep gloom. She had been assigned a case: a man looking for his runaway son, but she had solved it the previous day. Yet, something kept the Corellian from handing in the file. The boy was safe. It could wait, just as she had been for... nothing. Surely the father was worried, but there was no urgent thoughts ran through her head. Corran had regained consciousness the previous day. Her wounds were healed, although a scar would remain across her thigh. Her condition not being urgent, Bast‘s treatment has been postponed, allowing the skin to heal in an ugly rift. At least her leg matched the rough, broken skin on her back.

Bast made herself a bland porridge, eating it without thinking. She didn’t believe in superstition, but perhaps this was the galaxy telling her for the third time to give in. Retire early. Swallowing the final bite, she shrugged on a coat and exited the small apartment, going anywhere but where she’d been in an attempt to escape the loop of indifference. At some point, perhaps tomorrow, she would take another case.
