THE SPIRAL GUARD
The Spiral Guard, known prior to their reformation as the Pirates of Indrexu, is a paramilitary organization which operates primarily in the Indrexu Spiral region, with operations occasionally extending into the rest of the Tion Cluster and beyond. Originally a pirate band, they were eventually reformed into the Spiral Guard by their leader, the Reborn Queen, a woman who was believed by many to be the reincarnation of Hylei Indrexu Cortess, an ancient ruler of the planet Ranroon.

"Perdition or Victory! For Indrexu! For the Reborn Queen!"
_Spiral Guard battle cry.

Despite their criminal beginnings, the Spiral Guard has grown to be highly respected within the Tion Cluster, Indrexu Sector and Far Perlemian as champions of justice, although they have never been strictly affiliated with any official law enforcement organizations, operating as primarily a vigilante militia. They mainly operate in the areas previously described, but are known to send agents into the wider Galaxy to investigate and assess potential threats.

ORIGINS

The Spiral Guard were originally incorporated as a pirate gang known as the Pirates of Indrexu, a generic band of raiders who haunted the few hyperlanes which crossed the Indrexu Spiral nebula. Like most pirates, they sought to steal riches from the ships they waylaid, although they would occasionally stoop to ransoming wealthy or well-connected passengers. In their original incarnation, there was little to distinguish them from dozens of other pirates operating in the region.

This all changed with the Coming of the Reborn Queen.

During a routine interdiction on what the band took to be a passenger liner, the Pirates of Indrexu discovered that the ship and crew belonged to a strange religious order, who were in the process of transporting their messiah, a young human girl. Initially hoping to ransom her back to the cult, the pirates took her prisoner, most scoffing at the notion that the child could actually be the reincarnation of the fabled Queen Indrexu, as the cultists claimed. However, over time, a curious thing began to happen; the pirates started to believe.

Whether the child was just particularly persuasive, or whether she actually was some sort of reincarnation or heir of the long-dead Tionese queen, none can say in the present. Regardless, the Pirates of Indrexu all eventually came to believe that the girl was who she claimed to be. Gradually, the pretense of ransoming the Reborn Queen was dropped, with the Pirates of Indrexu becoming her new guardians and protectors. They adopted the mission of the cult who had raised her before them; to serve the Reborn Queen, and reunite her with the reincarnation of her soul-mate, the equally legendary conqueror Xim.

The Reborn Queen grew to adulthood in the care of the Pirates of Indrexu, who took on the pretense of being her guardians and agents. Although the gang's rank and file did truly worship her, the higher ups mainly used the Reborn Queen as a figurehead, giving her very little real agency. Her "viziers" commanded the gang, although this state of affairs would soon change.

TRANSITION

Krayd Hasperre, the legendary Ossein pilot and adventurer, would play a significant role in making the Pirates of Indrexu into the Spiral Guard. Captured for evaluation as a potential reincarnation of Xim - few believed that the feared human conqueror could actually live again in the body of a diminutive Amaran, but it paid to be thorough - Krayd was subjected to various trials in the fighting pits of the Reborn Queen's asteroid fortress, and amazingly, came out triumphant. He went on to save the Reborn Queen from a plot by one of her viziers to strip her of free will with the use of cybernetic implants, which caused her to finally declare her intention to command her followers directly, rather than through intermediaries.

Under the direct influence of the Reborn Queen, the Pirates of Indrexu gradually transitioned from criminal raider cultists into a semi-formal military. At this time, they became known as the Spiral Guard, named for the Indrexu Spiral rather than solely their leader, and were tasked by the Reborn Queen with ensuring peace and justice in her "realm". Over the years, they grew to be an increasingly professional and well-honed fighting force, operating outside the normal bounds of the law; when the authorities failed, the people of the Tion Cluster knew that it was the turn of the Spiral Guard to see justice done.

PRESENT DAY

The Spiral Guard continues to exist into the present day, operating on both sides of the Sith-FWA border throughout the Tion Cluster and surrounding regions within sight of the Indrexu Spiral. Though not numerous, they are exceedingly competent, with a distributed partisan-style command structure spread across cells on countless inhabited worlds. Continuing their mission to help the weak, the powerless and the unjustly wronged, they operate as small commando units, squadrons of ground troops or starfighters carrying out surgical attacks against targets designated by high command, local leadership or the judgement of individual teams. Swift, stealthy and lethal, they are rightly feared by criminals and despots throughout the region.

STRUCTURE

The Spiral Guard is primarily a citizen militia organization, organized along partisan lines with cells on many inhabited worlds throughout the region. Members are volunteers, although they are generally vetted and then approached by the organization before being invited to join. Spiral Guards tend to live and work in the communities they protect, although they may be called upon to serve elsewhere if required, linking up with other militia cells as needed. This is generally done only in dire situations, however, as cells are generally kept ignorant of one-another to ensure that other parts of the organization cannot be compromised by the word of a single compromised member or group. Each cell is made of of 4 to 12 members, with individual members referred to as Guards, and their leader - responsible for overseeing missions and communicating the regional Commodore - being referred to as Captain. Captains are responsible for all tactical-levels decisions for their cell.

Above the individual cells, the Spiral Guard is overseen by regional bosses known as Commodore. Each Commodore oversees 4 to 12 Captains and their cells, and is responsible for issuing strategic goals for the cells they communicate with. Commodores are highly secretive, often never physically interacting with their Captains.

Commodores are beholden only to the Indrexu themselves, who is the group's overall leader. As necessary, the Indrexu can bypass the chain of command to communicate directly with Captains or Guards.

LEADERSHIP

The Spiral Guard is led by the Indrexu. Originally, the Indrexu was the Reborn Queen herself, however the position has since become a title, given to Spiral Guards who distinguish themselves within the organization. The title of Indrexu, uniquely, is not strictly hierarchical; any member of the organization can be elevated to the position of Indrexu should they be deemed worthy by their deeds, no matter their previous rank.

The current Indrexu is Gina Kalzner, a 19-year-old library science major from the planet Raxus, who has the distinction of not having been a member of the organization before being catapulted to the top spot. After single-handedly clearing a transport loaded with priceless manuscripts from a group of Dark Side terrorists, and rescuing a Spiral Guard fire team in the process, her iron will and charisma saw her quickly promoted by a consensus of the Commodores. Normally a cheerful student, her battle-hardened tactician side comes out in a crisis, and she is not one to be trifled with, either in abstract strategic planning or in single combat.

INTENT

To create an NPC extralegal militia which has taken it upon themselves to fight powerful criminals and would-be conquerors, not affiliated with any government. They would be the guys who show up when the local authorities or even the Sector Rangers can't or won't deal with a problem. They might also be the core of a resistance movement as the Sith Empire slowly rolls over the Tion Cluster, although really they'll fight anyone who gives them a reason.
