DESCRIPTION
The TIE/LN starfighter, better known as the TIE Line, TIE Fighter or Eyeball, is the progenitor of the entire TIE family of starfighters originally developed by Sienar Fleet Systems in the last days of the Clone Wars. First demonstrated to the Republic but ultimately ordered into production by the Galactic Empire, the TIE would come to be a symbol of the New Order's boundless military might.

Simplicity itself, the TIE/LN is about as bare bones as a combat spacecraft can get. Built around Sienar's revolutionary Twin Ion Engine propulsion system, which incorporates no moving parts, the TIE is little more than an engine/cockpit pod flanked by two large vertical panels, which mount an array of solar collectors that augment the TIE's reactor output. Primarily, however, these panels serve as heat radiators, improving the tiny craft's thermal efficiency. Unlike many starfighters, the TIE/LN does not incorporate a life support system for its pilot; instead, the pilot must wear a sealed flight suit with its own life support box when flying in space. The ship's sole armament is a pair of under-slung medium laser cannons.

The TIE/LN was manufactured in staggering numbers by the Empire, becoming one of the most produced spacecraft of any type in Galactic history. Despite its deceptively simple design, the TIE proved itself a deadly fighter; its stripped-down nature gave it an excellent power-to-weight ratio, as well as top-tier maneuverability. Though it lacked a shield or hyperdrive, making it relatively fragile and short-ranged, it was extremely cheap to produce and available in plentiful supply; TIEs were treated almost more like expendable ordinance than piloted craft. Imperial pilots were instructed in the use of swarm tactics, with very little emphasis placed on the importance or even survival of individual ships.

The TIE/LN was a staple of the Imperial arsenal throughout almost the entirety of its existence. The distinctive wail of its engines was familiar to many, representing both order and oppression in equal measure. After the fall of the Empire and the rise of the New Republic, the type remained in service, although production was drastically scaled back. Even long after the end of the Galactic Civil War, the TIE/LN is still one of the most common starfighters in the Galaxy, and is found in service to legitimate governments, rebel groups, private citizens, mercenaries, law enforcement, criminals and others. Being so common and simple, the TIE/LN is often subject to modifications, sometimes extensive ones, which may bring it more in line with modern standards.

LEGALITY
Legal. Though they are technically starfighters, TIE/LNs are considered only light craft under most jurisdictions, and are not restricted in most systems.

INTENT
To create a standard, low-end starfighter.
