Valerian (pronounced /və-LIR-ee-ən/) was a mysterious Force-sensitive human male who, once a valiant Jedi Knight, turned to the dark side and became a violent and vengeful member of the Jedi Exiles: falling in line with the Exile Marauder tradition, where he found himself in the company of "Jedi killers."

▵Biography

The precise origins of the human man who would come to be known as "Valerian" are unknown. All that was known of his past was that he once numbered himself among the valiant Jedi Knights and brought his youthful energy to the fight against the Jedi's exiled brethren. However, the tragedy on Ilum, which he was present for, warped him—bathing him in dark side energies—and gave him a strong hatred for the Jedi Order. He blamed the Jedi for being unable to see the Jedi Grand Master's betrayal and was further damaged by all the death he drank in (through the Force) during the kyber crystal's ignition. Warped by darkness and wounded by betrayal, Valerian fell to the dark side and left the Jedi Order behind.

The tragedy had done more than damage Valerian; the intense disturbance of Force energy also cracked his lightsaber crystal. Giving fully into his darkness, the Dark Jedi traveled to Prakith in the Deep Core—a world similarly bathed in the dark side—where he bled his lightsaber crystal and constructed a new weapon to symbolize his rebirth. But the young Dark Jedi was far too consumed with hatred to gather his strength and continue his training. Instead, he set out into the galaxy in search of others who shared his hatred of the Jedi Order.

As the shadow war between the Jedi and the exiles continues across the galaxy, Valerian departs in search of followers in the hopes of gathering together a powerful enough force to wipe the Jedi from the galaxy forever... and also to devise a way to feed the insatiable hunger that has steadily been growing within him since he was awash in the dark side energies that resulted in the aftermath of Ilum...

▵Personality and traits

The man Valerian was prior to Ilum is gone; the shell left behind is a mentally and emotionally unstable entity, consumed by hatred, fear, hunger, and a singular desire for revenge. The young Dark Jedi is entirely incapable of love or normal human compassion, and he is prone to outbursts of rage that make him both fearsome and unpredictable. Combined with his tendency to use a mask and voice modulator to disguise his former appearance, Valerian is an intimidating and dangerous figure in the dark side of the Force.

Valerian is little more than a beast of darkness. He cares nothing for philosophy or building a new Order of dark siders. The followers he does intend to collect are more cult-like fanatics than politically or religiously ambitious. Likewise, Valerian has little care for the overall ambitions of the Jedi Exiles; instead, he cares only to sate his desire for blood and to seek an end to the hunger that has plagued him since Ilum—a hunger no normal food can quench. As a result, he has been driven completely insane. He rarely speaks. What words he does say are poignant and, usually, laced with venom.

▵Powers and abilities

Valerian is a being of pure malice; his presence in the Force is incredibly cold and exudes powerful sensations of fear and hatred. Though he is a beast in every sense of the word, Valerian does have some capacity for Force powers, and is particularly talented with Telekinesis and Force hallucinations. Some say he can generate powerful illusions to induce fear in his victims, which he then feeds upon to fill the void within him. As a result, his Force sense ability is particularly sensitive to fear and large clusters of fear can actually call to him, drawing him to wherever he might find his next meal.

However, Valerian's true skill is with the lightsaber. Wielding an ancient design, harkening back to the beginning of lightsabers in the Jedi Order, Valerian uses an acrobatic form that relies on heavy blows and finesse to wear down his enemies before he ultimately kills them. His sword-style reflects his personality: cold and merciless, and he is not known to show mercy after having bested an enemy in combat.

▵Miscellaneous

Valerian wields a crossguard-style lightsaber with fiery red blades. He is also rarely seen without his mask, made of simple durasteel, in the shape of human skull, which has within it a voice modulator that makes him both sound and appear partially mechanical.
