DESCRIPTION
The Venator-class star destroyer is a heavy capital ship originally manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards for the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars. Serving as the standard main-line warship of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Venator was the direct ancestor of the later Imperial-series star destroyers of the First Galactic Empire.

From the outset, the Venator was designed by KDY to be a workhorse for the Republic, equal parts command ship, carrier, troop transport and main line battle wagon. 1,137 meters in length, it had a crew of 7,400, plus accommodations for up to 2,000 passengers, 7,000 tons of cargo and consumables sufficient for up to 2 years in space. Unlike the later Imperial, the Venator was restricted by pre-war Republic limitations on the armament of large capital ships during its design phase, and so was not especially well armed for its size, incorporating just 8 dual heavy turbolaser turrets, 2 dual medium turbolaser turrets, 60 dual light laser turrets, 4 proton torpedo launchers and 6 anti-boarder heavy repeating blaster turrets on the outer hull. In practice, the Venator was severely outgunned by most large capital ships fielded by the Confederacy of Independent Systems, a deficiency that was heavily over-corrected by the later Imperial. Partially the compensate for this, however, the Venator was an excellent carrier, able to accommodate a full 19 squadrons of starfighters or light starbombers, plus support shuttles. The ship could also carry up to 40 troop transport repulsorcraft - typically LAAT-series gunships - to support planetary landing operations.

Venator-class star destroyers served with distinction through the Clone Wars, participating in most major fleet actions by the Republic Navy. By the end of the war, however, their shortcomings were highly apparent, and the type was largely taken out of frontline service by the fledgling Galactic Empire as newer star destroyer models were produced to replace them. By the middle of the Imperial era, the type had been largely relegated to rear-echelon duties in the Core, or to Imperial bone yards; indeed, many were in the process of being scrapped as soon as 5 years after the end of the Clone Wars, part of a policy by the New Order to recycle wartime resources, although in reality a program to deny war surplus capital ships to any fledgling rebellion that might seek to acquire them.

In the present day, Venator-class star destroyers are understandably a rare sight, with only a handful surviving war, obsolescence and the scrapper's torch. They can mainly be found in service to mid-tier system and sector fleets, as their smaller crew and maintenance requirements compared to larger, more powerful Imperial-era designs make them easier to operate.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Venator-class star destroyers are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities. Even then, they are ridiculously expensive to operate; only a relatively large faction or decently well-off planetary government would be able to afford it without swiftly bankrupting themselves. An individual would stand no chance.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from Canon into our site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
Venator-class star destroyers are large capital ships with heavy weapons, and capital ships cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They may be acquired as a faction asset with staff oversight.
