DESCRIPTION
The Volkite-class war droid was an ancient pattern of battle automata, dating back to the era of Xim the Despot. A contemporary of the Guardian-class war-robot and the Hutt Auto-Janissary, the Volkite was considered a lower-tier fighting machine in its day, having limited mobility and no built-in weapons, although it was cheaper to manufacture and deploy than many other designs.

Volkites were simple in design, consisting of a tall cylinder standing on a pair of legs, with a pair of manipulator arms tipped with simple pincer claws; arms and legs were protected by flexible synthmesh tubing. Volkites had a single slit-type photoreceptor facing forward, as well as a pair of audio receptors and an integrated comlink. They were armored with desh, reasonably good protection against the primitive energy weapons and slugthrowers of their day, and still able to turn light blaster fire in the present.

Although they had no integrated weapons, Volkites were proficient with most hand weapons of their day, and were most commonly armed with beam tubes, their pincer claws being equipped with tiny sub-manipulators which allowed them to operate the controls of weapons designed for humanoid hands. They were also surprisingly effective melee combatants; although their range of motion and speed was poor - they could only progress at what could described as a "determined shuffle" - Volkites were able to wield spears and swords with calculated precision, and were immensely strong, able to easily restrain any enemy they managed to grapple. Despite their unsteady appearance, Volkites were equipped with reasonably sophisticated gyro-balancers to help them keep their footing, as well as gription plates located in their feet, allowing the droids to anchor themselves in place on almost any surface.

Notably, most Volkites have a trio of armored external power conduits located on their upper bodies. If all of these are severed, a Volkite may be forced to shut down.

Like almost all droids of the period, Volkites could be centrally controlled by a remote computer command system, although on the whole their own onboard cognitive circuitry was slightly more sophisticated than some other combat droids of their time. Volkites could communicate in primarily archaic Basic via a primitive vocabulator, and other languages could be programmed. In terms of behavior, most Volkites are and were described as "methodical", and even "contemplative", although they seem to know what they're about when things start happening.

In the present day, Volkite-class war droids are no longer produced, and are considered highly obsolete on the modern battlefield. They are sought after by collectors as desirable antiques, although they are not nearly as rare as some other ancient combat droids, with many functional and semi-functional examples still in circulation. Recently, a large cache of Volkites was discovered in the sub-levels of a castle on the planet Trogan.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Although considered antiques on most worlds, Volkite-class war droids are still combat machines, and possession of them is regulated similarly to modern battle droids on most worlds.

INTENT
To bring a common type of robot from vintage sci-fi and adventure film serials into our Star Wars fanon.
