Location: Vardos, Gleb Memorial Reserve

Mila has seen fire before, several times on Ryloth she recalled times when the woods would strike a blaze and the grasslands would burn for a week or two, but nothing really came of it; least not that she remembered, then again she had been six. This fire on the other hand, it was something else. It looked rather that someone had rained down hell upon the planet, as pockets of flame gushed up and enveloped trees, before moving on to the next; she'd never seen flames have such ravenous a hunger. The smell of burnt wood burned at her nose, as even from the relatively safe distance the pair were were at, Mila could still feel the heat from the flames. The cloud of smoke that had been kicked up blanketed the sky, bringing back memories of her adventure into the heart of darkness; the mere thought of which sent shivers down Mila's spine.

She turned to Oren, as it was rather apparent what they needed to do. This reserve had a vast array of wildlife within it, but one species above all else needed to be saved; the Speckled Cherfer Hound. The beast wasn't known for being overly hostile, except when approached, but Mila hoped that this situation might make the beast think otherwise. The section of the reserve they were heading into was listed as there designated habitat, and she had to hope this rescue would go off without any further suffering occurring.

Oren had never seen a fire so rampant among the forest, he had heard about such things before, but to see it in person was another thing. The heat and the smoke was nearly blinding, and it reminded him of his time on Ifrane and the horrors that he and his class had faced during their time there. But, today was no pilgrimage--they needed to rescue as many animals as they possibly could, and to try and get everything under a manageable concern.

He wore a cloth rag over his face as he marched through the smoking ash and soot, his brown eyes hidden under a pair of goggles, "This fire is too big for the two of us...we need air support and fire repellent dropped," he would say in a muffled voice, "I suggest we pull the animals back, as many as we can get...what do you think?"

She was glad to have Oren around frankly, his experience as on par with hers, so surely the two of them together could see this ordeal through. He made the rather apparent point that the fire was too large contain for the two of them, which she full heatedly agreed with. They couldn't waylay the fire, but they could still accomplish their mission.

Oren had taken to wearing some minor fire gear to protect himself, which was more than Mila had access to; sadly her biology made acquiring such gear in the field neigh impossible. "Might be for the best, least get them to an evacuation zone and hope the fire brigade can tame the fires." Mila replied, as she closed her eyes and gave her eyes over to the force. Her senses cut through the smoke, as she could feel the life signs in peril nearby. "There are creatures not far from here Oren, if we hurry I think we can save them." Mila stated, as she began to move in the direction of one herd, though she could feel the hot air being blown her way. Time was clearly of the essence, though rushing into a fire head on wasn't exactly brilliant. They needed to be careful, least they end up trapped and cut off by the flames.

The idea of herding a bunch of animals through a rampant fire and to safety like they were starring in a holo-western seemed to be the most asinine thing he could think of, but it was Mila and himself, so it didn't seem too far out of the ordinary. He had proven on Eraidu that he could help nurture a mudhorn, but it was kind of hard when you're dealing with all this smoke and whatnot.

"What are we looking for?" He would cough as he waved away a bit of smoke, "Don't tell me it's rancors?"

Mila could make out the animals that laid up ahead, and confirmed it was the beasts they were looking for. "Cherfer Hounds. Do you know what those are?" Mila announced, and if Oren wasn't familiar, she would explain just what they were. "Think Kath hounds but bigger and meaner. They're omnivores, travel in packs, and-Never mind, just take comfort in knowing it isn't Rancors." Mila caught a mouthful of smoke as she began to move forward, and found herself coughing a fair bit, though she recovered rather quickly. "We just need to funnel them away from the flames, though we need to be careful and not get ourselves caught in a trap." Mila stated, as she could feel a shift in the air, as the force was trying to tell her something. It soon became apparent what that message was, as a smoldering dead tree gave way and came falling towards the Twi'lek, who only just managed to leap out of the way. Throwing a glance back to Oren, she could only shake her head.

She had a witty retort armed and ready, but now wasn't the time; he never took her anywhere nice it seemed. "I can sense them up ahead, a dozen in total." She called out, as the pair would start to come into thicker clouds of smoke, the smell of burning wood was now launching a full scale invasion on their nostrils. The heat was slowly starting to rise, as the pair were moving towards the fire as it ravaged the land.

Oren would tilt his head slightly, "Those are dogs..or wolves right?" He hadn't heard of the creatures before, but when Mila went on to describe their characteristics it would leave him with his skin crawling, "Killer hounds...I'll make sure to note that, hopefully they aren't hungry...because that would be unfortunate."

The knight would peer towards the coughing Mila, a slight frown forming under his masked face, "You're gonna kill yourself, take it easy..I'll go forward in the smoke and see if I can find them." Oren would say as he began to funnel through the wall of yellow smoke that filled the trees.

His feet would crack and crush through the dirt as he walked, his gloved hand reaching out through the force. Mila had mentioned twelve of them were somewhere nearby, and thus they had to be close. He could feel the fear and the decay of the fire through the force, rippling.

Suddenly he would see the outline of one, then two, then three, then nearly a whole pack of beasts through the smoke. It seemed they were circling him, testing him and even hunting him. The Knight would hold out his hands, as he attempted to radiate peace towards the beasts--but, through their fear and anguish it didn't seem like it was going to work.

Oren hadn't heard of these beasts it seemed, which was both a blessing and a curse at the same. Well, the force had given this hand to play with, and they were going to play it regardless. The near miss encounter seemed to spark Oren's defensive tendency, as he offered to take the lead. If Mila wasn't too busy coughing, she would have argued against him, but obviously she could do little at this point to sway his opinion. She waved her hand in front of her, trying to displace some of the smoke that was giving her a head time. She felt rather silly now for thinking the force would be enough to assist her in this endeavor, because clearly she was wrong about that.

She could feel something moving closer, as she lost sight of Oren she could still feel him up ahead, though there was a wave of fear and terror that seemed to move like a shroud. "Oren!" Mila attempted to call out a warning, only to inhale some more of that intoxicating smoke. Seeing her friend in danger, Mila pushed on regardless, shutting her eyes and letting her senses be taken in by the force.

It didn't take long before she found herself near one of the beasts, with Oren seemingly at the center of a kill circle. Not good at all. She could feel him attempting to utilize the force and perhaps calm the creatures, as an aura of serenity seemed to emanate from him. Sadly, that didn't seem to work. Now what was she going to do? An illusion wasn't possible, but just maybe....

Seeing little choice, Mila leapt towards her friend, putting some energy into her legs as she tumbled through the air, landing beside the knight. It was like something they had done before, but this time with a twist. Mila would set her hands on Oren's shoulders, adding her force to his own, but even that would only serve as a delay. The aura coming from the pair was stronger certainly, but it seemed Mila's maneuver wasn't going to be enough. The aura seemed to make the creatures reluctant to strike currently, but this wasn't going to help get the creatures out. As the two knights were attempting this power, Mila's voice would echo to Oren's mind, as she could only think of one more option. "This might sound ridiculous, but perhaps if we let them chase us, we can guide them out that way.". It was stupid, certainly so, not to mention reckless, but it might be their best chance of accomplishing the mission. If Oren had a better idea, she'd be willing to go with that, but at current the Twi'lek was getting the feeling that these hounds were quite irritated.

Oren nearly froze when he felt a hand place against his shoulder, his brown eyes would turn to face the other knight. "I told you not to come to me," he'd say with a slight frown. He cared about the woman and didn't want to see her get hurt. He would turn though, feeling her force flow through his shoulders and into his body. He held out his own hands, attempting to feel with the force, but the smoke was playing into the fears that lingered on the planet.

He could see the beasts begin to lunge towards them, and Oren would waist no time, "Seems like a change of plans," he'd say as pulled her back towards the direction they came, "Promise me you're not going to fall ill," he'd respond with a huff, "I think we should split, get them to break up, it should be easier..try to use subtle force speed, so they don't catch us."

He could hear the beasts lingering and barking as they came from the shadows, Oren would pause taking in her purple skin, a soft smile formed under his mask as he embraced her in a quick hug, "Go!" He'd shift off to his right, quickly descending down a small ridge.

She could hear the concern in his voice as he gave her a small lecture. He'd have to live with it though, she felt his life was in peril, and she'd never forgive herself if she stood by and watched harm befall him. "And I told you to be careful." She fired back, but this was no time for arguing. She was right and that was the end of it. Despite the efforts of the two, the fire and smoke was by far the stronger entity here, and it seemed that a change of plan was to be needed.

Oren directed her back towards the way they had came, as it seemed they were truly going to try and make a run for it. "Only if you promise me the same." She responded back not long after, though she felt she understood where they were going with this. She glanced back to him as he gave her a run down on the plan, though she couldn't see his eyes past the goggles, she could feel that their gaze was interlocked. She was not very fond of this idea truth be told, but they certainly didn't have another option. The pack was on the move, and neither wanted to be included in the dinner plans. Their shared force connection was cut loose, as the one diverted back to two, and she felt a tinge of sadness at the loss. They only had a mere moment to share with one another before they were to carry out their duties. Needless to say she hadn't expected the embrace.

Her face took on a faint pink hue to it as found herself on Oren's embrace, though she had not long to enjoy it. He told her to go, and that was exactly what she did. Her first steps were a tad clumsy, her mind still trying to process what had occurred, but she pushed the distraction away for another time, as she pulled upon the force to put a bit of a spring to her step, and she was off. Mila became a purple blur, as she raced through the wall of smoke, stinging her eyes and nostrils as sadly she didn't have a way to prevent such a thing. She could feel the forms of several members of the pack take note of her, as she seemed to succeed in drawing their attention. She only hoped Oren would have similar results.

Oren felt his cheeks turn slightly red as he turned back to catch a glance as Mila spun ahead. He didn't have time to worry about his friend, she would be fine. Instead, his attention was drawn towards the beasts that hounded and barked as he slid down the steaming incline. He could feel their maws snapping and hissing towards him with each and every step.

As he descended down the hill it seemed that the smoke was getting thicker and thicker, making it nearly impossible to see or manage. With a slight huff, he would push through regardless, though he knew it would be near impossible to find his way if he wasn't careful. The problem was, he was fixated on looking back and forth, that he wasn't looking at what was in front of him.

His foot would catch an unearthed root, which would send him stumbling forward into the steaming soot and ash with a thud. He would turn back, seeing the beasts had begun to slowly descend around him, as his goggles began to slowly steam up. "Kriff," he'd grunt as he raised his hands towards the beasts. This doesn't look good.

It was a bit of a tight escape, but not something she couldn't manage. She could feel the wind displace as the hounds snapped their jaws. If she had been wearing robes, they probably would have torn it to pieces. It was a bit of a pain rushing through smoke at break neck speeds, eventually Mila gave up on keeping her eyes shut, allowing her instinct to guide her movements. Even as a jedi, one still needed air to breath, and there was not much of that to go around here in the middle of a forest fire.

The speed was no issue, as she jerked to and fro, dodging trees and the overzealous jaws of the hounds, she mainly just struggled in not sucking down smoke with every gasp of breath. In fact that problem soon became a critical issue, as Mila felt a wave of lightheartedness begin to set upon her. Feeling it take hold, Mila changed her approach, as she needed a moment to give pause, catch her breath, then continue on. Altering her path, she directed towards a tree, and using her force speed, she managed to traverse up the trunk, and take hold of a tree branch, pulling herself up as she could finally take a whiff of somewhat clear air. Laying herself against the limb of the tree, she wasn't sure how far she had traversed, but the smoke seemed to be lesser than it had before.

Unfortunately, her new 'friends' hadn't forgot about her, as six of the creatures awaited her down below. She could actually see their forms now, as they attempted to leap up and snap at her. Though she was much too high up for them to do much of anything, that didn't keep them from trying. Mila had gotten herself into quite the conundrum now. To make matters worse, she felt the branch under her start to give, as the tree was old and dying, it's limbs not holding the strength needed to support her weight. It was going to take some real work to get out of this mess, and she could only hope that Oren was doing better than herself.

A few hounds would lunge towards the future Jedi master with a fervor and ferocity that he hadn't seen since the Rancor incident. He'd roll to his right, dodging one, but another would latch onto his arm, biting into it and drawing a bit of blood. The Jedi master would grunt with a bit of anger,as he used the force to push the beast away.

With his left hand badly wounded, he'd reach up with his right, creating a barrier around himself as he calmed himself. Center yourself and look towards the force, through the smoke. find peace. His masters words would ring through his head, as he took a deep breath.l He could see the beasts heaving and coughing, with each passing second the smoke was getting worse for them.

He would reach out through the force, putting more energy into it, as he slowly began to clear a bit of the smoke around the beasts, giving them vision. He'd call out through the force, attempting to calm them with his words. I understand your fear, but it's okay now, follow the path I clear.

It would most likely take all his energy, but it would possibly work. Raising his injured left hand as well, he'd slowly begin to pull the smoke away from the group, creating a clear path as they walked. The beasts would look back, but only feel a calmness that he had lacked moments before. He could feel the sweat building up on his head and a tiredness slowly overcoming him. Find peace.

Seeing how she quite literally was hanging on a limb, Mila had to act fast, and quickly. She began to sit up, feeling the tree branch beginning to give. Mila managed to get one foot onto the tree before the limb snapped, and quickly lunged forward, moving into a roll as she fell into a cloud of smoke. She held her breath, though that did little to help with her feelings of lightheadedness. In Mila's mind, she imagined she'd hit the ground and roll like she had done all of one time, this time was not so. Instead of hitting level ground, she landed on a rock instead, and felt something give way along her ankle. It didn't stop her from trying to run, but she found it a tad harder to keep her right foot steady.

Mila continued on, knowing that the hounds would be on her any moment now, only to realize that they almost certainly would have leapt at her by now. She spared a glance to see what happened, and saw what was the cause. The tree branch hadn't been the only thing to give, but the tree as well, and it seemed the dying plant had trapped the hounds under it in it's death throes. Mila could hear their whimpering now, as it seemed the tree was starting to crush several of them, and the jedi was left with only one thing to do. She felt something wet and cold running down her face and headtails, and soon realized her upper face had a gash across it, from what she wan't sure, but it would have to wait. She reached out, aiming to move the large tree, hoping to free the hounds and figure out what to do from there. The old tree was heavy though, as even with her strength in the force, she had to push herself to make it move.

She unintentionally found herself reaching for Oren's presence, calling upon that bond for support, and found he was in dire straits as well. While this might have caused the efforts of both jedi to fail, something else happened, their connection drew strength from one another, as both would feel with their backs against the wall, the strength they were in need of was given from depending on the other.

Oren would take deep breaths as he walked among the smoke, his hands pushing out, calling to the force with a subtly that only a Knight with a decade plus of experience could. He irradiated calmness, though his body was slowly crumbling with fatigue as he did so. He imagined he had walked nearly a mile or so, and slowly the woods become a little less filled with smoke. The hounds he had lead were starting to pick up speed and they would turn back as they opened a clear open field.

He could feel their eyes looking at him, with curiosity and some form of gratitude, we're all connected..you and me. He would say through the force, as his hands clenched against his knees, his tunic was drenched in sweat, and his goggles had fogged with each steamy breath. He hadn't heard from Mila, and started to get worried. He would slump down against a tree, crossing his legs as he focused through the force--his breathing slowing as his mind began to clear himself of doubts.

He would reach out with tendrils through the force, feeling a pain. It would take most of his energy, as he found Mila. Slowly she would feel an energy or an aura around her, as if she was being held through the force. Use the force and center yourself..I'm with you.. His words would echo through the air around her, hopefully providing enough strength for her to continue on with her mission.

Oren felt his connection lock through the force with his Twi'lek friend. His signature would wrap around her, embracing her with a tenderness he rarely showed another. She would find herself filled with courage and strength, and a light sense of simplicity and fondness that seeped with the signature of the near human Jedi Knight.

He couldn't hear her words or feel her embrace, but he felt her confidence that swelled with her actions, as she moved to do whatever she had to. He would slowly pull away his signature, as he felt the sweat dripping from the tops of his forehead and down his tanned face, he may have been tired and the planet may have been filled with smoke and grief, life still went on, and for these hounds, the chance to repopulate their deprived population could carry on. He was proud of himself and Mila, even if she wasn't with him at the current moment.

With a gentle sigh, he would pull himself onto his feet, as he walked through the untouched golden grass that made up the plains that ran on the edge of the smoking forest. Soaring high through the air would be crafts, dropping vast sheets of suppressant onto the area. Things were going to be okay, it would just take a little bit of time. He was done here, now it was time to return to the camp and assist the other Jedi in any other way.
