The Temeraire book series is set in an alternate 19th century Earth where dragons are real and utilized by humans as a sort of pre-aircraft air force in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars. Dragons grapple with one another in the sky while their human crews fight on their backs with musket and sword. I'm unaware how many people on this site have read these books since I personally have never met anyone else that has read them, but I enjoyed the series a great deal and think the universe is perfect for the sort of free-form rping done here. The idea is for any would-be players to join the crew of an aerial corps dragon and fight in crazy battles, rising through the ranks and possibly becoming the captain of your own dragon. I've already gotten a few ideas for where our story could be set, but would be open to any other ideas if people are interested. The possibilities are as long as human history.

Scenario 1: The Golden Age of Piracy (1714-1718)
Following the end of the War of Spanish Succession many Privateers from both sides of the conflict find themselves out of a job. Rather than return to the dullness of their old lives these men and women turn to piracy, flocking to the Pirate Republic of Nassau to earn their fortunes. You are a member of one of these pirate crews, attacking unsuspecting seafarers not from a sloop but the back of a dragon.

Scenario 2: The American Revolution (1775-1783)
After years of tensions reach a boiling point the American colonies erupt in a war for independence from the British Empire. Facing a vastly superior opponent, you will join a haphazardly organized American Aerial Corps, with the objective of fending off one of the best trained militaries in the world.

Scenario 3: The First Crusade (1096-1099)
Pope Urban II has called for a crusade to retake the Holy Land, and the zealous liege lord you serve has answered that call. Trained as a crossbowman and made to crew his dragon, you'll soon set out for the Levant, not knowing if you'll ever return. Although this is far removed from the original setting of the books I still think it would be an interesting story to play out.
