DESCRIPTION
The C-01 Star Saber is an antique starfighter originally manufactured by the Republic Fleet Systems corporation. A relic of the Old Republic, the type was developed during the Sith War as a possible replacement for the S-100 Stinger, although the older design wound up outlasting it in regular service.

The C-01 Star Saber and its YC-01 trial production variant were long, slender craft, reminiscent of certain Incom Corporation designs which would appear several millennia later. Representing a major advance in starfighter technology, the type used many systems and construction techniques that would be considered modern, including the use of high-tech titanium alloys rather than lightweight but comparatively flimsy bondite, as had been used in earlier designs. The type's main advantage was speed; the Star Saber was capable of 115 MGLT, faster than its primary adversary, the CX-133 Chaos starfighter used by Sith forces. It had a main armament consisting of 2 heavy blaster cannons under the wings in the early YC-01s, standardized to 4 medium blasters in the mass production C-01. Secondary armament was a 4-shot concussion missile launcher. Like the earlier Stinger, the Star Saber was equipped with a hyperdrive, although a class 2 in its case, giving it improved interstellar "legs".

The Star Saber does have a notable disadvantage compared to its predecessors, one which would ultimately limit its success both on the battlefield and in sales. Though extremely modern and high-tech for its time, and faster than much of its competition, the Star Saber had inferior maneuverability, with sluggish controls and a wider turning arc than the earlier Stinger. These flaws, first identified on the prototype XC-01, nearly led to the cancellation of the entire program, though in the end the type was approved for trial production due to the pressing need for high-performance starfighters. In the end, the problems were never completely eliminated even in the serial production model.

Star Sabers, especially the trial production YC-01s, were issued to Jedi pilots during the Sith War, their preternatural reflexes allowing them to cancel out many of the type's flaws. The full production C-01 was similarly issued to ace pilots, who could leverage the type's advantages to overcome the disadvantages. In combat, Star Saber pilots tended to rely on speed and firepower rather then turning ability, preferring high-speed hit-and-run attacks to traditional nekfighting and close support loitering.

In the end, the C-01 Star Saber was replaced by the superb Aurek-class strike starfighter. These days, Star Sabers are not often seen outside museums and private collections, or the lower strata of junkyard worlds, and would be woefully outclassed if pressed into service on a modern battlefield. Functional examples are still highly prized for their history, however.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Though badly obsolete, Y/C-01 Star Sabers are starfighters, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from Legends into our site's fanon.
