DESCRIPTION
The Y30 Badger is a frigate-scale capital ship manufactured by the Kaloth corporation, a small Outer Rim starship manufacturer, in an effort to reverse its failing fortunes with an entry to the growing military market. Somewhat rare in the present day, the Badger is an "armored" frigate, a type of warship which had fallen out of favor over the course of several millennia, but which Kaloth seeks to revive.

The Y30 Badger is a simple, fairly boxy design, adapted from a heavy cargo transport concept by the company which was never built. 300 meters in length, the Lupara has a crew of 1,000, space for 400 passengers, 1,000 tons of cargo and 4 months of consumables. The ship's hull is a boxy, tri-lobe form, with primary armament located in the two lower lobes. This consists of twin banks of 12 heavy turbolasers, 24 in total, each gun being angled slightly downward and protected behind a retractable armored cover, as well as a pair of forward-firing heavy ion cannons. There are also secondary missile batteries, 12 in total, plus 12 retractable dual light turbolaser turrets. Close-in defense is handled by 8 quad medium laser turrets.

The Badger is equipped with 12 starfighters, deployed through a pair of magnetically accelerating launch chutes to port and starboard, somewhat of an anachronism in the present day but useful for launching ships quickly. Deployed ships are recovered through a ventral hangar bay, serviced and "reloaded" into the launch chutes via an internal conveyor system. Pilots enter their craft from ready rooms via a slide system. The recovery hangar also contains 2 shuttles, which are launched from there. The hangar bay is protected by armored shutters when not in use.

The Y30 Badger - named for a stubborn, notoriously aggressive and durable omnivorous mammal - is designed for two things: 1, to be equipped with enough firepower to savage much larger capital ships at close range, and 2, to be extremely hard to kill. Equipped with redundant shield projectors and a doonium-duranium laminate hull, the Badger can tank shots that would cripple most ships its size, with protection values closer to a heavy cruiser than a frigate; nearly its entire exterior is armored, and all weapons can be retracted behind protective shutters. Its armament is also extremely heavy for a ship of its size, although it is mostly not very flexible. Badgers are thus geared primarily toward specific types of tactics and modes of engagement.

Standard battle procedure for a formation of Badgers is to launch fighters to screen against enemy advance elements, and then to fire on the enemy fleet from standoff range using their frontal heavy ion cannons, softening up the shields and other systems of their intended targets. After this has been accomplished, or after the enemy has moved too close to effectively engage by such means, the Badgers will initiate melee with the enemy ships, closing to within point-blank range and using their fixed heavy turbolasers to perform raking broadside attacks, relying on heavy shields and armor to endure replies from any still functioning weapons on the enemy ships. While doing this, the ship's secondary light turbolaser turrets and missile batteries will engage targets of opportunity, including smaller capital ships, gunships, bombers and snubfighters. If desirable, a Badger will use its tractor beams and docking tubes to latch onto an enemy ship, sending in boarding parties to attack it from the inside and/or capture it.

The Y30 Badger does have a few weak-points. Although notoriously difficult to damage due to its heavy shields and armor, the Badger is not especially maneuverable, and can be outrun by most smaller ships. Although groups of Badgers can be a major threat to capital ships of cruiser scale or above, they can in turn be swarmed and subdued by corvettes or even other frigates. Losses are to be expected in any such operation, however, as these ships rarely go down without a fight.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Y30 Badger armored frigates are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To create a melee-focused small capital ship that if used properly could be a threat to larger ships. Also, to create a ship that can Admiral Nelson it up.

RESTRICTIONS
Y30 Badger armored frigates are large capital ships with heavy weapons, and capital ships cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They may be used as a faction asset, however.
