So, I was plodding along yesterday, going through the slog of writing up a character profile, and my mind felt like someone who had just spent an hour licking envelopes made of sandpaper. I got to thinking how annoying and hard it was for me personally to do stuff like character sheets, which made me wonder something.

Obviously, we all love writing, but I've found that there are always aspects of it we late, from losing a character to having nowhere to go to simple writer's block, so if you'll indulge the wierd panda's curiosity, what is your biggest obstacle in writing and RPing?

For me personally, it's losing a character and the aftermath of that. Writing the character sheet is bad enough, but for me, I feel pressured to make this next character totally unique and different compared to the last, and then there's the idea of meeting the same character I already knew previously for the first time again, which can make things a little monotonous for me. It can ruin some of the fun, and that's not accounting for my astounding lack of direction with each character, and the annoying thing is it's all in my head.

How about you lot? What's your biggest roadblock when it comes to enjoying SWRP?

Bullying. Certain people like to cause drama and be mean for no reason and harrass other people and legit try to kill their writing for the site anyway they can.

I tend to make simple rank-and-file characters who rarely grow up to become something special, but despite the creative freedom I give myself in crafting their particular stories I always seem to overexert myself and get into a writer's block. Sometimes I wonder if it's not easier to simply follow an archetype and have a set story in mind beforehand.

I tried a set story for the Doctor and Abigail, it only pissed me off when they derailed and went their own way, though it was pretty fun at the same time. In my opinion, probably best to have a rough direction, but figure out the details as you go, less disappointment or control freak rages that way :'D

I had that problem on another rp site. Got to the point I left and quit roleplaying for a while.

My problem is setting a character to go in one direction then think about going a different way. Just to get stuck.

My biggest thing, I think, is just trying to make sure the rest of them stay together. I'm nineteen, I'm not a Dad, but I'm looking after two people who are really in some emotional turmoil right now.

I have no idea how I'm supposed to keep them together, while keeping myself together, and it's really something.

Balancing it, time wise, with real life- I have a real life full time (and then some) job on top of Admin gig here and trying to write my own characters, a full time real life significant other, and several other real life hobbies.

I imagine that's the biggest struggle for a fat chunk of us- time.

My muse. It's temperamental. Sometimes it's on fire, sometimes it's steady and sometimes it's dead.

We're making it, and I'm stepping up to the plate, somehow. I didn't even realize I had this in me. Time is... time pisses me off, and sleep is such a waste.

My muse. It's temperamental. Sometimes it's on fire, sometimes it's steady and sometimes it's dead.

Muses suck. You gotta let yourself write garbage. That's right. Your thoughts, no matter how unconnected, just write them down. Keep writing. Don't stop writing, time yourself, twenty minutes. Stop, take a break, go outside. Change your surroundings, do anything but that thing without thinking of writing and it will make you want to do that thing. But if you can't do that, then just keep writing down your garbage and watch it add up into something that's actually pretty good.

Your writing doesn't change. Your mind just tricks you into being bored of it. I write for a living, so I can't have writer's block, it's not a thing I'm allowed to do. Work on it, after a while the muse will come back strong.

Fell into that trap too. You have to look at your profile not as the definitive outlook of your character, but a mold. Don't make a plan point for point of who you want them to be, that's boring and it ruins the point of RP. You've gotta experience it naturally. Sure, Abigail died. Venatus died, I was upset. Arhena died, I was furious. But I'm back. That just means they where good characters - and I can't wait to see them in the next timeline. I had Venatus wage a war on the Vahla until he was strong enough to contend, then I went with the Order and basically let the main story take it from there. And through that, he went from Kravos level murder happy to pacifistic, calm, collected. His first thread had him tearing people apart, and I mean tearing. Visceral.

And then he became Jedi Optimus Prime.

Let it flow naturally. The profile is just that - a character sheet, not a life plan.

Biggest Obstacle: I like naps far more than any of you.

There are solutions to that. I cannot in good conscience recommend them however :)

Mine would be lack of creativity.

I can make a generic character, plot .etc, and run with those things. But sometimes I have a hard time coming up with new/better ideas for things.

Work.
Personal life issue.

And what usually makes it better for me?
Helping someone else - I can plot for days for the benefit of others I swear >.>

While I often struggle with balancing time between work and free time, I personally find one of my biggest roadblocks is story progression. If I'm up to post next in a thread and the plot is not very clearly laid out, it often takes me an extremely long time (as in an hour or longer) to storyboard and write down the direction the thread will take.

Time... and pvp. I'm not very confident in how to pvp correctly or effectively.

I know those feels, losing a PvP is never fun, especially if it results in character death, but it seems to me that, as long as your ears are open and your eyes are keen, each PvP makes you more experienced and you get better each time, so keep giving it a go, maybe make a character mostly for PvP? That way, you won't be as nervous about jumping into a risky story you like the look of :)

My biggest obstacle? That’s easy. Depression *dab*

Pvp I personally enjoy though. It excites me and drives me to RP even more. If anyone ever needs help with that let me know, I’d love to train you in the upcoming timeline or murder your character! :D
