NAME: Yulie

FACTION: Jedi

RANK: Padawan

SPECIES: Dathomirian

AGE: 15

GENDER: Female

HEIGHT: 5’3”

WEIGHT: 118 lbs

FORCE SENSITIVE: Force Sensitive

APPEARANCE:

Eyes – Unremarkably humanoid, with a faded hazel iris. Habitually avoids making eye contact with other people.

Nose - Aquiline, with a prominent bridge that is slightly hawkish.

Hair – Ashen-coloured, like a dead silver-grey smudged with charcoal. Eyebrows are darker, dyed by engine grease from repeatedly wiping sweat from her brow. Her hair is worn in a medium-length wild style that fans out as it swoops back. Her bangs are parted away from her face, remaining in place because years of neglected hygiene has made her hair stiffer and more rigid than it would like to be.

Skin – A deathly pallor common among her people, but an unusually white hue compared to the Galactic standard.

Distinguishing Marks – As Dathomirian females typically wear tribal tattoos on their faces, Yulie’s bare face distinguishes her as having no Clan. Her only tattoos encircle a slaver’s brand on her palm, indicating her transactional history and suggested retail price to those who know how to read them.

Build – Under-nourishment has given her a smaller-than-average frame. Pointier features have replaced the roundness of youth, giving her a borderline feral appearance.

Fashion Sense: Yulie gravitates towards darker colours, primarily dark reds and near-black shades of grey. Nothing she ever wears hints at affluence.

Her current ensemble begins with a dark red half-top, frayed enough to find its way into to a thrift shop that flips giveaway items for a meagre profit, but still comfortable and with a few years left to it. Since if only reaches halfway down her bust, she wears a tight undershirt beneath it. It was once white, but has been smudged so frequently with oil that it's black and has a permanent shine even when clean. Her right arm has a dark red armsock that has a brass clasp that fastens around her bicep.

The lower half of her body is largely covered in a long, heavy, dark red sarong with black embroidery. While she's more comfortable wearing tight-fitting black pants underneath, she may sometimes wear short shorts in hot climates or (in an effort obvious to anyone who knows her) when trying to appear more desirable. Capped off with sturdy boots fit for work or combat.

ATTRIBUTES:

The Force (Strength): Yulie’s deep connection with the Force is raw and primal. Her control over it is at its best when used intuitively or in concert with her instincts, but she has begun to develop proper control. If she can tame the chaos within and enter into a spiritual bond that is receptive to higher thinking, she would become quite formidable.

The Force (Weakness): Left to explore this aspect of herself without any guidance, she has clumsily refined her abilities into imperfect versions of themselves that pale before anyone with authentic training and is in the process of unlearning some bad habits. Only recently has she learned how to use the force without fueling her Techniques with negative emotions, but she still remains in the shadow of the Dark Side. It affects her thoughts and feelings, clouds her judgement and preys upon her mind. Her nights aren't as restful, wounds take longer to heal, and food is less nourishing.

Personality (Strength): Yulie is tenacious in self-improvement. If she has clear goals, she can remain focused and put in an unparalleled effort to better herself or learn new things. She is patient, methodical, and resourceful.

Personality (Weakness): she does not believe that her life has inherent value so does not treat herself very well. Believing that her worth is in the eye of the beholder, she is unlikely to stick up for herself and is more likely to settle for less. This may manifest in all sorts of ways, from haggling exceptionally poorly, doing more than her share in teamwork, or naively being unaware (or perhaps even indifferent) of exploitation.

Social (Weakness): As a consequence of the Nightsisters’ conversion to the Sith under Renfry’s subjugation, Yulie is unwilling to let go of Nightsister culture and The Book of Laws. Seeing herself as The Last Nightsister, she must uphold those ways as well as honouring the Jedi Code. Even when she does so, as their respective founding principles are indeed compatible, there are many on both sides who would see her as failing to live up to the expectations of either. Basically, she has to put in extra effort to fit in and gets less recognition for it.

Physical (Strength): Remarkably high tolerance for pain and discomfort.

Physical (Weakness): She is small, lean, and light. In situations where size matters, she is typically at a disadvantage. Mind-altering substances would have stronger effects on her.

Mental (Strength): Pride will never be her undoing. She does not overvalue her knowledge, skills, or accomplishments, and she does not presume anyone to be beneath her. Even in the thrall of the Dark Side, arrogance is not a trait that she displays. She is not ashamed to admit her ignorance, nor does her ego get in the way of learning something new.

Mental (Weakness): having spent most of her life in slavery, she still has not completely adjusted to being free. Freedoms and privileges that are typical in society are still quite new to her, some of which she is not even aware of. She is bad with money, for her baseline understanding of an object’s or service’s value is significantly warped. She had nothing in the way of a formal education; apart from skills developed with hands-on experience, she lacks knowledge in most subjects that many would take for granted and she is mostly illiterate.

PERSONALITY:

Her experiences as a slave has deeply affected her. Though free, she has a diminished sense of agency. She keeps her opinions to herself unless asked, conforms to the will of the group, and lets others take the lead. She likes having choices but can become overwhelmed when there are too many. She longs to make meaningful connections with others but does not think that those feelings could be reciprocated, so she is awkward around those she respects. Although Yulie is passive when it comes to her own treatment, she angers quickly when she sees others being victimized by those in power.

Yulie is at war with herself and fighting a losing battle against the corruptive influence of the Dark Side. As a child, Yulie was adventurous and bold, certain of herself and an unapologetic dreamer. It was only when she first drank from the poisoned chalice of the Dark Side did she become receptive to the psychological conditioning of slavery. Rather than lash out against the world or others, she internalized the negative emotions that the Darkness brought her and grew withdrawn, became meek, and finally subservient. It kept her dark reflection in check, and she found it preferable to torment herself than give in to the power of the Dark Side. However, in the long term, this is an effort doomed to fail. Turning the darkness inward does not conquer it.

In the thrall of the Dark Side, she becomes a twisted version of her old self. She still finds solidarity with the weak and the oppressed, but she will quickly become the abuser to correct perceived injustices. In this state she just wants cruelty to beget cruelty. Her adventurous spirit is rekindled into that of a ruthless crusader. It is liberating to make others feel the way she felt about herself. Yulie is frightened by this side of herself and is horrified by her actions when regains control. Following one of these episodes, she will be harder or herself than usual, doubling her efforts to suppress the monster inside.

BIOGRAPHY:

Born in a debtor’s prison to a slave girl and a guard who was taking advantage of her, she was the heir of one of many life sentences that had not been served. It was a penance dating back to the Clone Wars; a small number of well-intentioned Dathomiri warriors joined the Separatist forces so the CIS would not feel the need to extend the slaughter of the Nightsisters to the other Clans.

When the Republic was re-organized into the First Galactic Empire, the Emperor spared no mercy to anyone who had ever opposed him. Charged as war criminals before a military tribunal, the surviving warriors were each given a life sentence for every Clone they had killed and sent to labor camps.

In a debtor’s prison, children inherit the debts of their parents. It did not matter that ownership changed hands as the balance of power shifted over the generations; to an accountant, debt is eternal. But since it was against policy to fraternize with the workforce, her father covered up her origins in an act of self-preservation. It meant that her inheritance was not accounted for in the ledger, so she was named Yulie for it meant ‘Nothing’. A common name for people born in slavery down there.

As an object without value, she would only have to earn as much as required to pay back what she borrowed (rations, meds, that sort of thing). The pricing was rigged against the workers, so she learned to work hard at a young age. The men taught her what they knew of trade work, for they were marketable skills. The women taught her how to dance, for there was more opportunities when prospective buyers would venture in.

Yulie’s specialty was crawling around wreckage where the grown-ups could not squeeze in and would scout around for worthy salvage to pull apart. It was enough to earn a seat on her share of transport ships to worksites throughout the system, though the bomb in her neck quashed any urge to sneak away. Were she to venture too far from the Pylon, it would be her end.

During one project, she was leading a childhood friend of hers through the ruination of a Venator Class Destroyer, the most awe-inspiring ship she’d ever seen. Nature had claimed it long ago. Deep in the cavernous walls of the flight deck, she found something to pay off most of her remaining debt—the weapon of a Jedi warrior.

Her friend wanted it for himself, though, and argued that it would be enough to buy freedom for himself and his parents. When she tried convincing him they could split the money, he snatched it out of her hands and shoved her in a burst of anger. She only survived the fall because of all the cobwebs. Soon, the sound of skittering giant spiders added to her troubles. Somehow, she managed to scare them off for a time, but they were always nearby, pressing on her mind. Waiting until she was weak.

She was quite surprised they offered her a webbed-up rodent when they returned. After a few meals at the mercy of spider generosity, Yulie realized they were acting like she had domesticated them. They would raise a leg when told to, would sit on command (or something close to it). And that was when she got the idea to coordinate them into making enough fresh webbing on the walls so she could climb up and get out. It took days, but it worked.

By the time she returned to the Pylon, she was a pressure cooker filled with fire and ice and rage. Accompanied by a platoon of giant spiders, she found her old friend while he was asleep and reclaimed her lightsaber. He insisted that he was sorry and pleaded that he did not try to sell it. Yulie believed him, but debt was eternal, and she owed the spiders a week’s worth of food. With only a single thought from Yulie, they swarmed the boy and got their due.

In the end, the lightsaber was worthless. It would not work, even when she fully repaired it. The pointlessness of the whole ordeal filled her with regret and shame. She withdrew from those around her, and rumors circulated about the creepy girl who talked to spiders. It made her even more distant, and strange things would sometimes happen around her. A helmet lamp would burst, a soup cup would crumple on its own. The guards began thinking that she was going to be a problem.

Years later, they got rid of her the first chance they could. A crew rolled in looking for a Dathomirian woman to buy, and any would do. They were the sort of people who were so committed to getting rich quick that they would chase any wild rumor that carried the promise of profit. Pirates, bounty hunters, mercenaries, gangsters, thieves, smugglers, they became whatever they had to be if it meant easy money. This time, they were treasure hunters, looking for a legendary vault on Dathomir. According to legend, only a Dathomirian female could open it.

The guards had her dress up in something more presentable, showed her off, and mentioned her interest in tinkering. The crew made a deal, the bomb in her neck was replaced with an explosive collar, the transaction was added to Yulie’s slave markings, and she was under new ownership.

For a time, she helped around the ship and their base of operations while they pursued other schemes and hammered out the details of their plan. They would land near the ghost town of a Nightsister village, use seismic mapping around the swamp to find the underground cave system, and then would go spelunking until they found the vault. Once she had done her part, they would set her free. Not much of a plan, but that was to be expected from those who wanted a quick buck.

The expedition was a disaster. They had not found the location of a vault, but the hunting grounds of the Sleeper. Yulie took point in leading them through the caves. She could hear music that no one else could hear, and they thought it must have had something to do with opening the vault. The source of the music was a kyber crystal glowing brightly in the skeletal remains of a colossal back bane spider. The others could not see the glowing crystal either, but they were too preoccupied with approaching Sleeper to really care.

It was a slaughter. The entire crew, Yulie included, were plunged into a hallucinatory nightmare while the Sleeper picked them off one by one. However, the light of the kyber crystal allowed Yulie to pierce the illusion; it was a small pocket of reality within a horrifying dreamscape. Seeing no other way out of their predicament, Yulie relayed the idea of using her collar as a weapon against the creature. She could fasten it on the thing and the captain could blow it up moments later.

With the light of the kyber crystal giving her a reference frame for her surroundings, she was able to clamp the collar onto one of its appendages and hid behind the skeleton to escape the blast. The explosion blew off a chunk of the creature and frightened it off. Yulie claimed that chunk as a trophy and pocketed the crystal in case they would need it again.

Returning to the surface with only a fraction of their team, they were immediately surrounded by Dathomirian women of a neighboring tribe. Seeing the trophy Yulie had claimed, they knew she had subdued the Sleeper and opted to not finish them all off as trespassers.

Yulie spoke with their leader in hopes that Dathomir could become her new home. However, the women were less impressed the more they got to know her. They disapproved of her slave markings, detested the meaning of her name, did not think that her personality was strong enough to be welcome among them, and they perceived that her darkness was out of her control. No, she would not be welcome among them. But she was permitted to leave peacefully. Being rejected by her own people filled her with rage, and she slammed her fist against a boulder in anger and the impact knocked it over, worrying the captain.

The captain granted Yulie her freedom as thanks for saving what few members of his crew that she could, and for keeping the other Dathomiri women from attacking. He dropped her off at a space station with enough credits to start something of a life and they parted ways.

For the last year, that is what she has been trying to do. She became a drifter, finding work here and there, some of the jobs actually honest ones. On her own, she had to learn how to fight to keep what was hers, but her anger had a habit of pushing her too far. She never could stay in one place too long; the price one pays when making more enemies than allies and drawing the wrong sort of attention.

SKILLS:

Slaving – a skillset encompassing a multitude of menial tasks as well as the social skills expected of someone of her station. She can be seen and not heard, become a portrait of humility, and prioritize the comfort and needs of others at her own expense. Older slaves have taught her how to dance, but she has only limited experience performing.

Survival – when the chips are down, Yulie can find edible food (be it through hunting, gathering, or scavenging) and drinkable water, construct a rudimentary shelter, create a heat source, treat minor wounds/ailments and travel great distances, even in harsh environments.

Tinker – The knowledge of how things work and fit together. Yulie cannot make anything as large or complex as a droid, but she can keep things functional even when giving them the Frankenstein treatment with incompatible parts. She can repair almost anything with enough time and the proper equipment, and she has some talent in cobbling together mods for weapons, armor, or personal vehicles. This skill works better with outdated tech or garbage. She is not nearly as knowledgeable or skilled as a true engineer, so new tech comes with their own individual learning curves.

Lightsaber - completely unskilled. Due to her ignorance of the Force, she cannot build a lightsaber into working order. The assembly is sound, but properly aligning the kyber crystal is presently beyond her ability.

Combat Style (brawling) – if fighting unarmed or with improvised weaponry, she can hold her own. If she taps into the Force, she can become an urban legend in a tavern brawl. Her odds become unfavorable against armored opponents or those who really know what they are doing (whether it’s martial arts training, extensive experience in fights, and/or Force-trained).

Force Bond: Yulie has not managed to form a true bond with more sophisticated animals or great beasts but has managed to attract them for hunting or scare off individual predators. Simpler creatures, such as insects or small reptiles, she has had considerably more success. What holds her back is her state of mind; she does not understand that Force Bond is about establishing a connection, she feels that it is about establishing dominance and uses aggression to empower the Bond. The more evolved the target mind, the more it resists, and generally the angrier it gets.

Telekinesis: Yulie has only recently been able to move objects at a distance. Most commonly and most easily, she has only learned to do so by making direct contact with them. This is because her relationship with the Force is internalized; reaching out and opening herself to her surroundings runs contrary to her state of mind, impairing her efforts. Contact-activated Telekinesis has proven quite useful, however. By timing it with her attacks, she can hit someone like a charging mudhorn, dealing great damage to armor, solid objects, or otherwise send someone flying across the room. Releasing it through her feet, she can jump several times her height or land a similar distance. The problem is that this rules out gentler or more precise applications of Telekinesis, and only manifests as a bastardized version of how Jedi/Sith empower their fighting ability. Worse, indirect contact is ineffective, so she has not been able to improve performance with any handheld weapons.

Force Choke: Yulie only has a grasp of the basic principles to this technique. Due to her own misunderstanding of how it works, she can only target objects or life forms that may fit in the palm of her hand. So far, her feats are unimpressive. Snuffing out candles, shattering light bulbs, that sort of thing. Once, she burst a bag of snacks in a dispensing machine so she could get to the food without paying for it. The strength exerted is only marginally greater than the strength of her own body, and only at a range of 5-10 meters. Her potential in this area is rather limited because she draws upon her own fear to activate it. Unless acting out of desperation or actively trying to hide, activation is instinctual.

Force Surrender: Yulie's most proficient ability. She surrenders to the Force and allows it to guide her body where it needs to be. Thus far, it has greatly benefited her in combat, allowing her to make a trick shot with a signal flare and deflect two blaster bolts with a single throw of a lightsaber despite never having fought with one before. She has used it to blindly navigate a crowd. Her willingness to submit to another's will is actually profoundly helpful when it comes to the Force; even Jedi have difficulty letting go of their own desires and intentions well enough to develop this Technique. In Yulie's mind, so long as her body is where the Force needs it to be, she doesn't even have to try to win. In Reality, skill is highly advisable. Every faction has Techniques that distract and disturb another's emotional state; this Technique is less useful when one's mind is under siege.

Tutaminis: Now that she has begun to Telekinetically move objects at a distance, Yulie has begun instinctively using contact-activated energy conversion. Her biggest feat: wicking thermal energy from a baked potato away from her finger tips to avoid being burned, but she once demonstrated the capacity to resuscitate dead kyber, indicating that her relationship with the Force is so deep that she may one day commune with crystals and nexus' within the Force as if it were everyday conversation.

GEAR:

Nightsister Tainted kyber Crystal: naturally formed as a kidney stone in a colossal back bane spider, the crystal bathed in Dathomir’s Ichor for centuries before it chose Yulie. It appears to have an oily green stain on the inside, and when used (be it in Nightsister rituals/techniques or within a lightsaber) it emanates putrid green smoke. Since the crystal has not been bled, it is technically not aligned with the Dark Side, but its connection with the Force has indeed been perverted. If bled or purified, it will lose its unique aesthetic properties. Apart from those aesthetic properties, it functions no differently than other kyber crystals.
Currently being analyzed by scholarly Jedi for academic purposes and to determine if it is safe for Yulie to possess, but will eventually become one of the crystals used in the dual-phase lightsaber she plans on building.

Appendage of the Sleeper: a chunk of a creature known as The Sleeper. Wrapped in black cloth and worn on the left side of her hip.
Presently being studied by scholarly Jedi for academic purposes. Yulie plans on forging it to make the casing of her lightsaber, but wishes to fully understand it first.

Lightsaber: severely damaged during the Clone Wars, Yulie repaired it nicely but the kyber crystal had shattered into a dozen pieces. She attempted to use her own inside it, but to no avail. Worn at her the right side of her hip, obscured by her red sarong.
It has been relinquished to Jedi Master Izel until she is ready to have her own lightsaber.

Kyber Shards: fragments of a damaged crystal. Sought-after for bartering. She has only five pieces left (less than half), kept in a small pouch deep inside a hidden pocket.
They are in Jedi Master Izel's safe keeping.

Yulie's Way
The Jedi Code/The Book of Laws

Emotion, yet peace;
Those who suffer emotion will never enjoy peace.

Ignorance, yet knowledge;
Those who choose ignorance will never know their own greatness.

Passion, yet serenity;
Those who yield to passion will fail to dominate.

Chaos, yet harmony;
Never forget that your magic must always be used wisely.

Death, yet the Force;
Those who fear death will never achieve pure power.

Never concede to evil, lest you be consumed by it.

Yulie's Threads in Chronological Order:

Enough is Enough!: When Emryc released a broadcast over the Holonet, Yulie is forced into hiding after being mistaken as a Jedi by a spice addict, her Destiny forever changed.

The Path to Balance: Humility: Still in hiding, a desperate and frightened Yulie finds passage aboard a ship by trading her skills as a mechanic to pay her fare. Unfortunately, two real Jedi also book passage.

The Path to Balance: Perspective: The Jedi travel to planet Ambria, a world so mired in the Dark Side that it affects Yulie physically and mentally. After a traumatic brush with the Dark Side, Yulie is taught the basics about what the Force is.

The Path to Balance: Courage: With the ship shot down over Umbara, Yulie begins to use the Force consciously for the first time while being hunted under the cover of night.

The First Step: On Kashyyyk, Yulie formally requests to join the Jedi Order and is shocked to learn that the Nightsisters have joined the Sith. She reinvents herself, vowing to uphold both the Laws and Code, and to restore balance to Dathomir even if she has to go through Queen Renfry to do it.

A Place of Peace: Yulie arrives at the Temple on Yavin and is given a tour before her training begins in earnest. Emryc unwittingly set the forces of Destiny against him with his broadcast; were it never sent, Yulie would still be a servant in a backwater spice den.
