So I always thought this was kind of interesting, (though this thread might really be centered towards the United States) but after reading 1984 a while back I sort of saw some parallels from the book that correlate into the real world-now I'm not talking that everything in the book is true. But, there are a few things that I've noticed.

1. I've noticed on most of the major United States News providers will always push stories about extremist groups-or adversaries to the United States. For example at the start of this year there was a lot of focus on stopping Assad in Syria which went on for a while and then all of the sudden it just dropped off the news and it went towards Russia-then towards Boko Haram and the Nigerian Girls which lasted for two weeks or so and then it went back to Russia for a while and then it was ISIS-and currently it's about Hamas.

The interesting thing is that whenever you're watching or reading the news on these major networks is this is all they report all day and I've actually begun to notice quite a few people begin to speak very intolerant things about these races of people-then it dies away and a new group of people is targeted. And this all goes on while the United States Government (BOTH parties included) continue to really go nowhere in solving major problems affecting the Country. Which is sort of similar to the EastAsia and Eurasia references in 1984.

2. The Second noticeable one is mostly all of the inside spying that goes on, but that was pretty much a no-brainer even before Snowden.

What do you guys think, It was something I sort of picked up on recently and thought it was worth sharing-not saying it's true or it's a conspiracy, but I just saw some striking resemblances towards the Novel and real life.

The news covers what they cover because people tune in for those types of stories. Saber rattling sells as it were and the stupids will always be willing to line up for their chance to get angry. I would however that your point about the united states not going anywhere with its own issues while the news covers foreign issues should be simplified to the united states does nothing, because that seems to be what happens. A whole lot of nothing occurs with the US, where both parties don't do anything and just do this.

Until the end of time or come the next election. Where it changes to.

I couldn't agree with you more, this whole era has a Gilded Age feel to it with mediocre presidents and nothing note worthy happened. (Except of course all of these wars).

Ugh, tell me about it. Our lives haven't been the same since WWI. Everyone is just blowing their money. And don't even get me STARTED on Calvin Coolidge. That guy has done nothing but supported the interests of big business since the day he was in office! More and more tax dollars going towards the rail companies. Money grubbing dirtbags. Can't wait until automobiles become better. Then we'll REALLY be rid of the robber barons.

Really, what ARE our leaders oing? They rather make booze illegal than actually take on the real issues.

Yeah I get your reference there and all, not saying that everything is all doom here, but it's good to point out flaws with one's country-because I sense a huge surge of ultra-nationalism cropping up throughout the world-though that's another topic-people will always complain (such as myself) :P

Edit: Also, politicians will always be politicians even in the future-just human nature I feel.

1984 was written in the mindset of British imperialism, but it's only relevant today because of the issue it questions where national security takes over individual freedom. The war described in 1984 is, within the story, completely made up by the government for the purpose of justifying their Big Brother level of internal espionage, which implies that all media is controlled by the government and no one is allowed to leave the country (to eliminate the possibility of verifying the war's existence).

Spying on our own citizens has been a thing since the beginning of civilization, so it's really not a shock when Snowden came out. That's not what is outrageous: the outrageous thing about that particular case is the method employed: taking a private company that you have a contract with and using their records for spying. It's the implications around it, not the subject itself, that was a big deal.

It's most aparent in the fact that Greys were thought to mutilate cows. Not long after this, farmers began to feed cows Monsanto's new GMO corn, which cows are not known for eating on their own accord, nor is it believed they are even capable of digesting to this day. Hence, Monsanto is run by Grey aliens.

There is always a conspiracy no matter how probable. I have grown to feel like my life and my fate in this society, is nothing more than as a mere pawn, under the complete control of filthy rich demons, who control people through the media, cost of living, food, drugs and environment. The NWO Monument creeps me out. Our situation is not original. I suppose the fall of great civilizations throughout time have been inspired under pressure of similar circumstance.
