Affiliation: Waste Rangers

Ownership: N/A

Intent: The Intent of this is to provide the Waste Rangers with a fairly inexpensive though standardized Air Attack Vehicle which will primarily be used upon Zonju V for patrols and attack missions as well as potentially off world should we get a ship large enough to carry a few with their wings folded up. As it is an early starting vehicle it is very cheap, using much older though easy enough to replace or re build out of date technology. It is designed solely for fairly high mobility within an oxygen based environment.

Model: AF-16 Ranger Custom.

Size: 4.08m H x 11.99m W x 9.83m L

Weight: 3,700Kg

Armor Rating: Though lightly armoured, the Ranger custom is extremely hardy. Its external armour is on the weaker side of average, able to withstand low calibre weapons in the handgun to submachingun range as well as light blasters. The Engine block is the strongest part of the plane with the most armour, capable of shrugging off most shots from moderate power cartridges and blaster weapons without much an issue though repeated fire may quite possibly hit something important within the engine bay. The Cockpit possesses a few extra layers of armour packed between it and the skin allowing it to withstand shots from moderately powered catridges and blasters for a limited periof of time, a single shot though blocked likely compromising the armour around it for futher shots that land nearby.

Overall, the airframe itself is extremely tough, even with a large number of holes running through the wings and tail sections without a huge issue until structural integrity is completley compromised. The most effective weapons against these planes are flak weapons and thermobaric missiles, both of which can cause severe damage to the plane without a whole lot of issue.

Propulsion: The Ranger Custom is powered by a heavily modified 45 litre Rosenthal X-16RC engine outputting 2,600Kw of power on a 20% oxygen mixture of air.

Armament/Equipment:

  • Built In Weaponry
  • 8.5x78mm Frontal Inset guns
    - A Pair of machine guns embedded within the front of the aircraft, Fires seven-hundred rounds per minute with a level of power suitable to destroy soft targets such as infantry or small vehicles, moreso armoured vehicles and transports such as APC's or heavily armoured trucks likely immmune or highly resistant to attack. 200 Round Belts Each.

    Wing Mount Weaponry
  • 20x120mm Anti-Tank Rifles
-Much heavier weaponry using ammunition of varying types including Incendiary and Anti-Armour variants. Extremely powerful and intended for assault on hard targets heavily armoured vehicles, emplacements, and older model light tanks with its limited ammunition supply. Each one carries a magazine sized for twenty rounds in total. It's been rigged up with a wireless camera for fine aiming via datapad.
  • Scrap Laser Cannon
-Pulled off....something, this laser cannon was rigged up from a junkyard somewhere out of bits and pieces for use on the AF-16. The lenses are badly configured, giving it a wide beam but restricting the effective range to 150 Meters at maximum. Only somewhat more powerful than the inset guns. Can safely fire around 300 Rounds per minute without overheating too much, virtually unlimited energy to fire with.
  • Scrap Rocket Battery
-A piece of crap designed for use against large ground targets. Highly inaccurate and unpredictable but packs a powerful explosive punch with a shaped PETN core for use against siege targets such as small bunkers or larger buildings. Designed to be hooked on as a six piece horizontal rack where eache missile is fired one by one in a sequence. Effective range of about 200 Meters, on small house sized buildings. Charges can be changed out if necessary.

    Bottom Mount Weaponry
  • 250KG Bomb
-For when something absolutely must go, there is a bomb. Pulled together and welder together from scrap this bomb operates on gravity alone, exploding when both armed and impacting something with high force. Designed for higher altitude deployment it is intended for drop on heavily armoured groups and large bunkers. Rarely used by the Rangers against living targets, mostly intended for quick demolitions.

    NON-COMBATIVE ATTACHMENTS:
    Internal Systems
    [*]Civillian 3D-Radar system.
    - A Basic radar system like one would see on a basic ship or fighter. Tracks objects in 3D Space, incapable of distinguishing things beyond being big or small, often inteferred with by storms or approriate jamming.
    [*]Civillian Radio
    - A Basic Radio system, as used by civililans. The higher the altitude the farther the effective range will be, typically extending out to 250 Kilometers, 30-40 Kilometers when on or close to ground.
    [*]Internal Air Resevoir
    - An internal 30 Liter Air tank charged to 450 Atmospheres, Holds 13,500 Litres of Oxygen.

    Hardpoint Equipment
    [*]Drop Tanks
    - A Tank that contains something, Be in Oxygen, Water, Fuel. Though typically routed into the plane itself to supply such things, It's not unccommon for them to be hooked up just so they can be dropped to people on the ground for supply puposes. Often times for physical objects, such as ammo, a damaged drop tank can be used and be cut a hole in to store such things.

Description:
The AF-16 Cropduster started as an Early Rosenthal production aiming to provide a cheap farming vehicle to farmers in areas where times were tough and costs needed to be kept to a minimum. In the beginning a number of technical challenges needed to be overcome in its research and development, going through many phases of research and development to reach the final project. After all, nobody with more than two brain cells to rub together had made such a vehicle in thousands of years. The initial development was based on the technology of much more primitive cultures that had been absorbed recently into the alliance, using schematics for their primitive warplanes as the basis for the project. Despite selling Millions upon millions of units galaxy wide, the low production costs for such a larger and expensive to ship Item lead to only marginal profits, leading the company to open source the specifications to the public while discontinuing production, allowing it to live on.

The Ranger Custom, a derivative model, came into existence through the recovery and re-engineering of a number of scrapped stock AF-16 units. Through the tinkering of The Waste Ranger's resident mechanic, many modifications were made to make the plane into a higher quality warplane, suiting the Rangers low budget needs while providing an effective platform to be used on their home planet of Zonju V. The Modifications to it start at the frame itself, though mostly stock as far as the construction goes, dura steel tubing making up the majority, a number of reinforcements to it were made, in particular re-welding it all together with a phrik based alloy lending the joints, and by extension the frame itself, an incredible rigidness and integrity. The main skin, or Armour if you will, was constructed primarily from durasteel. The Internals such as the engine mounts and cockpit interior were framed with titanium to lower the weight and shift its center of gravity rearward towards the wings.

At the heart of the beast lies the incredibly powerful Rosenthal X-16RC Engine, traditionally, this engine cranked out about 2,100 Kw of Power in a standard 20% Oxygen mixture. This engine though was also heavily modified, and not just to lighten it up. From the base up the engine was reworked. The Valve springd were replaced with beryllium ones, The cylinders were rebored and the pistons were replaced with high quality forged ones, capped off with an inexpensive phrik durasteel alloy to withstand much greater pressures. The Crankshaft was replaced with a much lighter one based upon a racing model. Fly wheel was replaced with a titanium variety, fuel systems were replaced entirely. Almost everything one could create or otherwise find lying around for aftermarket parts was created. And finally, another thing was added, a special War Emergency Power system that fed additional pure oxygen normally intended for occupants into the engine itself for an increase in power quivalent to the percentage increase. Overall, this ranges from its base power of 2,600 Kw to nearly 10,000 Kw when taking full oxygen intake, something that would last a mere ten seconds at most.

Interestingly, the plane was designed with a system to allow it to operate both as a biplane, and a monoplane. The lower set of wings aren't so much attached to the frame as they are hooked onto it, for ejection should one need to cut the drag and speed up. The initial reasoning for this was simple enough, More space on the wings was more space that equipment could be loaded, additional space for external fuel tanks or even cargo drops without needing to take up space that would otherwise be better put to use fitting weapons and other machinery it could carry.

In terms of the actual weaponry it can carry, the AF-16 was designed not with any specific weapon in mind, but rather a number of hard points upon which equipment, or in the rangers case weaponry, could be added or taken away. Things both built by the company and systems that the individual tinkerers had dreampt up. The Ranger version is equipped with a built in weapon though, a pair of machine guns in front of the cockpit aimed through archaic means. In terms of hardpoints, it has eight in total. Two on the bottoms of the top wings, Two on the bottom of the bottom wings, two which exist in the corners where the top wing meets the plane, And two more running along the bottom side of the plane itself.

Technologically the planes themselves are, currently, fairly technologically backwards. They feature no real electronics and those it has are largely based upon much the much older vacuum tube model of electronics, which despite rendering it almost immune to electro magnetic interference leaves leaves it without many capabilities. The Interior of the cockpit is mostly analogue gauges and the like displaying everything from engine speed, altitude, temperature, oxygen levels, RPM, and ammunition counts, albeit likely inaccurately at best. Aside from a fancy pants radio, the most technologically advanced thing the plane has is an array of repulsors that exist to assist the plane in landing and allowing for vertical take offs, which exist along the bottoms of the wings, the bottoms of the main body, itself, and on the top of the wings for emergency use.

It also possesses a basic off the shelf sensor system for detecting nearby moving objects, this though is routed separately from the plane and wirelessly broadcasts to a cheap datapad within the cockpit.

You might want to put a combat radius and service ceiling on this. Modern fighters can fly up to heights around 17-20km, the WWII era Spitfire could go around 13km. With the oxygen feed thingy, you might be able to push 16km in that, though you would be putting your pilot at risk. Combat radius could reasonably be within a kilometer.

Looks absolutely awesome though! I didn't expect to see something like this show up on SWRP, lol.

I personally feel cowboys should be flying robot horses with unicorn horns that spit fire, but this is a close second...actually it's third we should be riding robot dinosaurs that can summon lightning.

Silver, Thank you for the compliments.

Also, Ive added an operational ceiling and a combat radius as you've suggested. But to clarify on the Oxygen feed, Such a thing would proabbly not see much use as it will eat the oxygen up within quite a short period of time.

If you were to use the Oxygen tank to provide 100% pure oxygen into the cylinder as its sole source of power, You would have 6-10 seconds worth of oxygen before that tank were to run out, based on a quick calculation.

Hmm, I read it as providing an oxidizer to the engines one you hit thinner air where the plane's engines have a lot more difficulty combusting the fuel. Which is an idea right there, and having re-read what you wrote, yeah, I see how the pure oxygen fuel would be used rarely.

Well, that's just an example, and I sorta posted it before I finished my thought process. Adding 100% Pure oxygen, assuming 100% of regular air pressure and instake was made of oxygen, would last the plane about 6-10 seconds.....and increase power by about 500%. In theory you could probably feed a much smaller amount of oxygen into it, perhaps maybe 5-10% at a high altitude to make up for the lack of combustible gasses to keep the engine running which would last you appxorimately 1-2 Minutes before that oxygen supply ran out.

I shall defer to your math. Hope this gets approved, very neat concept.

Was this what you were thinking?

Anyway, interesting concept for a SW tech piece.

Love it. Love everything about it, especially the high attention to detail.

That said...am I guessing this right?

Power Souce=Alternator=THIS THING RUNS ON GAS? OH snap.

Just from the title, I jovially thought, "Ha, the Waste Rangers are getting a fighter plane."

I'm still in shock I was right.

It's kind of a grey are, but I think technically this would classify as an airspeeder. Fighter is an abbreviated form of starfighter, which is a designation for spaceworthy ships.

Also the cost seems really low for an armed vehicle.

Sorry, The cost was an accidental mishap of sorts, a carry over from another tech submission I had written somewhere. However, I respectfully contend the air speeder classification as an airspeeder is by definition a aerial vehicle that gets its propulsion from repulsorlifts while primarily does not in a matter much like a starfighter does, this though is an Air superiority fighter, However I will change the classification to fighter plane.

I'm saying I wont change its classification to an airspeeder, But that I changed it to Fighter Plane to be more specific as speeders are repulsorlift vehicles.

Also, I raised the price, 4,500 for the base frame and 9,500 abouts with all its crappy parts attached, Is this acceptable?

A new T-16 Skyhopper is 14,500 credits, so that should be a starting ballpark figure.

You're using the old template. You're welcome to change it back for your faction's use afterward, but this submission needs to be in the new template.

Also, why not call it an Atmospheric Fighter? It uses a prop engine, right?

Right, I'll relist it as an atmospheric fighter. About the New template though, I'll have that pitched up in a short bit, likely later tonight, if acceptable I'll put it in a spoiler tag near the top.

I like this fighter. I think Aramis(my character) is the only one with a ship that can carry 2 fighters.
