I'm starting to develop a character for the next timeline. Long story short, its a droid with a "real boy/ Pinocchio" quest. I'd like your opinions on at what point a sentient droid becomes truly alive. Now I get that this is a tough one, but that's why I'm turning to you guys and gals. Bust out your craziest ideas, be them spiritual or scientific. Don't be afraid to get creative :D

I guess it all really depends on your own definition of alive and/or what makes a "Real Boy". Purely in my own opinion, I think that what your question is asking, in regards to being "alive", is more asking being "human". And being human is the ability to essentially ignore logic/reason, because of the seemingly inexplicable effects of hormones (emotions); And the extreme levels of sensitivity to the environment.

Of 'course, a machine can utilize the ability to create/use tools, and they can be made to reason, but are they capable of ignoring programming? Isn't that a paradox, if possible, the programming that allows a program to ignore a program? ... or something of the sort. And what extent does a machine cease to be sensitive to the environment (especially in a universe where the Force exists, ie. something that effects only living things) to the same extent as a human, or someone living? I personally can't say I think it is possible for a machine to truly achieve being "Human". But then again, why would you want it to achieve that? After all, the ability to ignore reason and logic opens the doors to mistakes. To make mistakes is human, but so is mortality, fear, and recognizing things such as failure.

If a machine was to fail, does it really recognize failure? Or is it running a program that follows logic enough to know that it should display/mimic emotions that represent sadness, frustration, and anger?

Maybe it can begin to develop a complex, when it starts to believe it is better than everyone else.

Or have it join a pirate fleet thinking it's like everyone else (of course other crew members see that your character isn't normal but they go with it) and eventually he learns about his true self. A droid that ______ because of ________

In my opinion, any creature witha sense of self interest and/or the ability to act outside reason is alive. I never thought watching the movies that the droids were any less alive than the people. Given the acting in the prequels they were a bit more alive, actually...
