BIOGRAPHY
Like other BD units, BD-9 was intended to be used for research and exploration for both mechanical assistance and companionship. The BD droid line was discontinued after the dissolution of its manufacturer towards the end of the Clone Wars, making surviving examples like BD-9 highly valued by collectors.
Originally owned by a smuggler named Epherik, BD-9 learned to appreciate valuable loot and became fond of treasure. In droid terms, that treasure being massive troves of ancient data: the sort of data that helped BD-9 and his owner evade authorities and generally avoid trouble. Their most memorable adventure was when Epherik and BD-9 nearly got their hands on a Jedi holocron. However, their prize was stolen away by the chaos that ensured in the initiation of Order 66. Epherik and BD-9 would go on further adventures, but age eventually caught up with Epherik and he went into retirement on the planet Vardos.
Despite living in the shadow of the Empire and in a center of Imperial fervor, the two managed to live in peace. However, that peace was cut short in the waning stages of the Galactic Civil War, when the Empire marked the planet as a target for Operation Cinder. Epherik died in the crazed attack and BD-9 was nearly destroyed.
It was by the generosity of orphans from Operation Cinder that BD-9 was saved from being scrapped. One of them, Luculia, had a little bit of mechanical know-how, but she lacked the expertise to bring BD-9 back into full operation. Additionally, none of them understood BD-9, unlike Epherik, which made it difficult for BD-9 to explain to the children what is still broken. Even so, BD-9 acted as a stalwart companion to the orphans by helping them survive day-by-day: locating food, alerting them of trouble, and so forth.
The planet eventually received relief from the self-proclaimed New Republic. BD-9 found itself acting sort of like a therapy droid for people mentally struggling in the aftermath of the Empire alongside Luculia. It held that role until the collapse of this second republic at the hands of the First Order. Luculia joined the Resistance and brought BD-9 along with her. The two served in the Resistance until the war's end.
Luculia sent on to serve as a medical officer of the Free Worlds Alliance, but she noticed that BD-9 felt hollow after decades of following others around. With her blessing, BD-9 went out into the galaxy, in search of its own place and identity.

PERSONALITY
With few, if any, memory wipes over its life, BD-9 developed odd quirks from its past owners. One such owner may have had a fondness for music, which BD-9 adopted in the form of a seemingly bottomless library of music selections that it could perform with its own beeps and whistles.
BD-9’s speech often required a translator, even for non-droids who are fluent in Binary, due to it having a much older vocabulary. Those who understand BD-9’s Binary language would find it odd that the droid acts nonchalant in the face of danger to both itself and its owner.
