Warning, this is going to be a haphazard mess of me brainstorming my thoughts and musing. Coherence is not going to be maintained.

Note for reviewing: I'll pretty it up once the writing itself has been given the all-clear.

Grand Army of the Republic

ARMY

YlCuEam.jpg

The mainstay and namesake of the Republic military, the Army is one of the largest military forces ever assembled in galactic history. Drawn from thousands of Republic-aligned worlds, each system is responsible for the recruitment, training and armament of its soldiers, though this is supplemented by Republic resources in the form of funding, advisers and equipment. This has created an incredibly diverse organisation with soldiers from hundreds of different species speaking as many languages. Soldiers brush shoulders with comrades from units ranging from all-volunteer formations utilising cutting-edge technology to conscripted prisoners equipped only with only the most limited gear. On the majority of worlds however, Army recruits are volunteers awarded an enlistment bounty, given several weeks of basic training, equipped accordingly and deployed to the frontlines. Furthermore, in the wake of the Battle of Coruscant, the number of recruits across most all Republic-aligned worlds has skyrocketed. Efforts to better uniform the Army continue, but with so many star-systems under Republic control there are simply too many worlds to make this a reality in such a short span of time. In systems considered at high risk of Sith invasion - or that are currently under siege - newly formed units will typically be stationed on the planet on which they were raised.

NAVY

ZPyv2g4.jpg

Responsible for the transportation of the Republic's armies, as well as engaging in ship-to-ship warfare, the Navy in its currently militarised formation shares a history as brief as its ground-based counterpart but among whom it counts both starships and crews of both considerable and little experience. Whilst the Galactic Republic had always maintained a sparse but functional Navy for limited peacekeeping and transportation duties, most of the Grand Army of the Republic's more experienced officers and their vessels come from defence forces raised locally by individual planets and systems, largely deployed against pirates and - depending on the planet in question - their own civil and localised wars. Considerable efforts and resources have been expended by the Republic to greatly expand and modernise its own fleets, as well as subsidise and reinforce those planets able to contribute their own starship construction and deployment. Machines and trained personnel do not appear overnight however, but as more star-systems enter a state of total war more vessels than ever before are seeing service on the frontlines of the war in space.

MARINES

swc23_planningtherescue.jpg

The Republic Marines are often seen as the 'face' of the Grand Army of the Republic. Formed to act as a quick reaction force aboard Navy vessels, the Marines are ready to be deployed to any system as needed. In contrast to the Army, the Marines are a much more uniform, better equipped and organised force, directly funded by and answerable only to the Republic rather than subsidised by any one system or planet. Most marines were drawn from the militas that comprised the defunct Border Alliance, quickly filling out their ranks with large numbers of battle-hardened veterans. Survivors from near-destroyed Army units are usually folded into the Marines to further supplement this more experienced force though raw recruits are not unheard of. Where the Army serves to take and hold ground, the Marines act as a flexible force of shock troops, usually working in tandem with Special Forces units during the initial stages of a conflict, or among the first friendly faces that a beleaguered planet's defenders see when 'the cavalry' arrive.

SPECIAL FORCES

swe16_preview2.jpg

Organised under the Special Operations Group, the Republic's elite special forces units were born out of the realisation that the war against the Sith Brotherhood was no mere border conflict. Units and individuals able to act independently of regular military units would be required to undertake sensitive and critical assignments including infiltration, sabotage, and assassination. Only the best soldiers from within the ranks of the Army, Marines and even the Navy are invited for selection, though the current state of war has forced potential recruits to prove their worth in the field as much as in simulations and training. Those who do move on to join their elite ranks are spared no expense, their armouries supplied with technology that is both cutting edge and and in some cases black market and illegal. Ultimately however, no amount of tech can account for ones own skill and talent. Though their origins and histories are diverse, every member of the Special Operations Group can be counted as one of the galaxy's most hardened, efficient and deadly soldiers.

Note: All GAR Player Characters are all considered part of Special Forces. Only NPCs makeup the other four branches, however service in one of them (or the defunct Border Alliance) should be part of your character's recent history.

___________________________________

In-character and Out-of-Character ranks are not mutually exclusive. For example, an Assistant Faction Leader (AFL) may opt to play a character who is ranked as a Trooper, whilst a Member may eventually become a Commander. The only exception to this is the rank of XXXXXX, held by the AFL responsible for the GAR sub-faction (@Calixis). IC ranks are gained based on in-character merit. In turn, OOC ranks are gained based on out-of-character merit.

Trooper - The backbone of any unit will always be its enlisted men and women. When a soldier is transferred to the ranks of Special Forces they are granted the rank of Trooper, regardless of their previous position. Most Troopers were corporals or sergeants prior to their selection, however there are many exceptions, particularly as the war has drawn on. Troopers are expected to be flexible in their operational capabilities, undertaking assignments both as part of a unit, in pairs or flying solo. For this reason they are unofficially viewed as having some amount of authority over regular Republic forces, at least to a point. It is not unusual for regular units to defer to their 'expertise' during particularly grievous situations.

Squad Leader - Trained and experienced in applying small-unit tactics, those who command Special Forces units must lead their men in on unconventional and critical assignments both on and beyond the battlefields in the war against the Sith. To lead a squad into some of the most dangerous and critical of missions requires experience, knowledge on tactics, initiative and confidence both in their men and themselves.

Commander - Special Forces Commanders are responsible for the planning and direction of the Grand Army's least conventional and important operations. Often working in tandem with other branches of the military, they command great respect from most of the hierarchy and many battles have turned by actions passed down from Special Forces Commander. Whether directing several strike teams as they infiltrate and disable a Sith warship, or taking to the battlefield personally in command of a leaderless, breaking Republic regiment, their purview is broad but all honed and utilised under one simple goal: Win this war for the Republic at any cost.

REPUBLIC CHARACTER CREATION GUIDE

This is going to be a guide intended to provide some assistance to members new and old who are considering creating a character for the Grand Army of the Republic. It will not go into too much depth on general character profile topics but inevitably there will be some overlap, rather it focuses on trying to both present considerations for your character and also pitfalls and suggestions on how you can further help your character slot into the faction.

The Republic is a somewhat unique faction in that it is the only main faction with a focus exclusively upon non-Force wielding characters. The Jedi and Sith swing their glorified glowsticks around, whilst the serving men and women of the Republic military nonetheless serve alongside of and against them with only their gear, determination and a heck of a lot of guts. Playing a soldier in Star Wars is a much more niche concept than a Jedi, a Sith, a bounty hunter, a Mandalorian or smuggler, but it is one that is well represented within the IP. The intent of the Grand Army of the Republic (abbreviated as GAR) is to provide a place where you can communicate your military character through an active, immersive faction alongside of others and against the numerous enemies stacked against the Republic.

Republic Special Forces

All player characters (PCs) that are a part of the Grand Army of the Republic are automatically considered part of the Republic's Special Forces. Generally speaking, PCs are almost always considered individuals that are more exceptional than NPCs (non-player characters), unless the member controlling them should go out of their way to play them otherwise and it is for this reason that PC soldiers could easily be singled out for such a group . Military factions on SWRP have always struggled to try and maintain a solid 'atmosphere' whilst not restraining too hard the initiative of characters, their authority and even just how few members typically write in the same thread.

As Special Forces operators, it affords greater flexibility in-character whilst still permitting greater suspension of disbelief that an enlisted trooper would be sent by themselves (as is often the case in PvP threads) or alongside 1-2 others to undertake the often critical, planet-shaping objectives that make up Missions. It is important to remember that your character will not be taking their first assignment after basic training/boot camp, but will already be experienced soldiers, though they may have only recently completed their selection to join Special Forces.

Additional information on the structure of the Grand Army of the Republic can be found HERE.
Why join the Republic?

If you are reading this guide then odds are that you've already made up your mind, but for those who haven't yet quite or are otherwise just curious then this is very much for you. The Republic is the a plae for military-styled roleplay on SWRP. Whether it be the armies of the the Republic, First Order or even Naboo Security, the armies of the galaxies are always there in opposition of and fighting alongside of the protagonists in just about every piece of Star Wars fiction. The Republic puts these soldiers at the centre stage of the story, whether as individuals or the units that fight together as one. Don't worry if you are not somebody who has done a lot of military-styled roleplay before, we are flexible on how 'hard military' people play up their writing. Whether you know every technical term and hand signal from the real world, or the extent of your experience comes from remembering that boot camp scene in Full Metal Jacket.

There is something to be said for a galaxy and, indeed, a forum roleplay where the story at times often feels as if it revolves around and draws attention so much towards the Jedi and Sith. They have their fancy glowsticks that go 'buzz' and 'thum' and they somersault around like a bad Chinese cartoon. That's great, but what about the average man and woman? The trillions of just... normal people. Their stories in this galaxy far, far away have as much potential to be equally fascinating, if not more so, than Force users. On an individual level, they truly are the underdogs of the setting. There is something very much heroic in a normal, average person signing up for the call to action - for their home, for their family, for duty, for revenge or even excitement - and going up against those odds and coming out the other side the victor.

The Profile

So, you've settled on making a GAR character. This section is focused on providing information, advice and generally helping you to tailor your profile so that it ticks all of the boxes of making a Republic soldier who slots right in. Whilst it will not hold your hand through the general profile writing process it it will give you some considerations and details you will want to think on and include.

1) The Grand Army of the Republic is a relatively new formation - The Sith Brotherhood emerged from the galactic north and began preying upon the Republic's border worlds. They were opposed by the Border Alliance, a rag-tag, military coalition of planets who agreed to aid one another in the event of invasion. Eventually, the Republic acknowledged the threat posed by the Sith and approved the formation of the Grand Army of the Republic, into which the now disbanded Border Alliance was folded.

It has only existed for several years. What this means is that your character is unlikely to have served in a professional military until recently. If your character had military/combat experience prior to this, it will most likely have been part of a planet's private military, security/defence/police force or as a mercenary. They may also have served in the Border Alliance during the early stages of the war.

2) Your character will have served in another Republic branch - The Republic military maintains four primary branches; Army, Navy, Marines and Special Forces. Prior to being considered for Special Forces, your character will have served in one of the three other branches. Alternatively, they may have been plucked from the Border Alliance during GAR'S initial formation, this being a particularly good excuse for returning members who had Border Alliance characters to get back into things.

3) Your character is not a Jedi - I'm going to be blunt about this. GAR is not the place for characters who want to swing lightsabers because we have two factions for that already. Force sensitivity is fine, but if you are keen to make that a major part of their character - including using Force powers - this may not be the place for them. We are about military styled, boots-in-the-trenches, explosions and blasters. Whilst GAR often fights alongside of the Jedi Army- well, there's a Jedi Army faction for that.

4) Consider a Speciality - Upon signing up for the Grand Army of the Republic you will be required to list a specialisation for your character. Give some thought as to what this may be. Are they proficent at reconnaissance? Battlefield first aid? Are they an expert pilot? Of course, a character may specialise in several roles and we won't shoehorn you into specific listings but it does help when putting characters together that they have a diverse, useful tool kit to make it feel more like a military unit.

Work in Progress as always. [/B]

SPECIALISATIONS

VANGUARD - PATHFINDER - SPECIALIST - ACE

Vanguard

The first into the fight and usually the last out of it, Vanguards favour the thunderous boom of their explosives, the satisfying shriek of a blaster rifle and the taste of copper in their mouths. Far from mere infantry, the Vanguards are - even among the ranks of Special Forces - some of the most indomitable, ferocious fighters in the whole galaxy. They live for the great adrenaline rush of a fight, whether upon the chaos of a sweeping battlefield or fighting mano a mano in the confines of a infiltrated stronghold.

Pathfinder

Pathfinders are adept at ducking and weaving through any and all types of terrain, from thick underbrush to crowded city streets. No skyscraper or mountain is too tall and no target is so deft they can elude their sight. Pathfinders are experts in reconnaissance and marksmanship, often serving in supporting roles as trackers, scouts and snipers. Though rarely seen, the presence of the Pathfinder is always felt.

Specialist

As per their designation, Specialists bring with them a wide repertoire of abilities, as well as equipment, to perform critical tasks that more often not require precision, skill and daring. Whether slicing into the security systems of a Brotherhood facility, tearing apart and repairing the critical systems of a damaged Republic walker or diagnosing and stabilising a poison-afflicted senator, the true talents of an individual Specialist are varied indeed. All of them can be counted as extremely intelligent, quick-thinking and crucial members of any Special Forces team.

Ace

Some people have a need, a need for the speed, manoeuvrability and firepower that only man-driven machines can provide them with. More cautious, cooler heads may condemn Aces as utterly insane and in more ways than one... they would be absolutely right. Fewer still however could disregard their talents. Whether in the cockpits of starfighters or at the pedals of armoured vehicles, Aces push their chosen machines to the absolute limits. The realities of war - and their raw talent - mean that Aces are pushed into numerous different vehicular positions, but most of them will still maintain a favoured second-home.

GAR Commando Units

Rebel_Heavy_Trooper.jpg

The new military structure is quickly becoming more regimented and coordinated, as it boasts members from all across the Republic. Despite the large formations and companies associated with an army, the usage of more specialized commando squads is still a necessity. Although expanding upon it exponentially, the GAR has taken the example of the Border Alliance's smaller groupings of troops into small attack squads, but improving upon the concept with high-tech armor, top of the line weaponry, and the recruitment of spec-ops professionals that already serve in planetary armies.

When you combine all of those factors, and spend a little time meshing the differing training idealogies of different cultures together, you get the ruthless efficiency that characterizes the GAR Commandos. These troopers are capable of filling most major combat roles on the field, even going as far as to operate heavy assault equipment in the form of tanks and artillery. This being the case, they find themselves more at home operating discreetly; taking on clandestine operations in the name of the Republic.

By default, members of GAR Commando Squads operate under the rank of Lieutenant and they operate independently from the regular command structure of the army, so as to avoid needless 'red tape' situations involving overly-diligent front line commanders.

Captain
c0056197_4c14f235cf81d.png

The Gar Captains are one of the most elite forces inside the Republic Army. Veteran Soldiers who have shown their worth on the battlefield, equipped with the best technology the Republic engineers can provide. They are at the forefront of every battle, and coordinate multiple teams of units over a vast terrain. They are able and allowed to wage wars virtually on their own, answering only to their Generals and the High Commander. Their excellent training, armour and weapons even allows them to stand up to the lightsaber-wielding Sith. The Captain is truely the highest honour a soldier can receive, and their expertise can determine the fate of every battle.

Lt. Commander

image.jpg.e8e6f5544b738ac4eb73cd4cddcb3c00.jpg

With every GAR Unit, you get a Lt. Commander that stands above the rest of the men and women within. Battle tested veterans of either the former BA or other armies, these gritty soldiers make the hard choices out in the field, and are tasked with getting the mission done at all costs. These elite officers do not lead from behind the formation, but are often seen leading the charge and being the first to shed the blood of Sith Fanatics who stand in their way. All while keeping a level head, and making the best tactical decisions they can in any given moment.

Specialised Battle Uniform

Arf2jpP.jpg

Dxyz4Qd.jpg

The SBU is an attempt at bridging the technological gap between the Republic's forces and their rapidly advancing opponents in the Sith Empire, as well as other potential enemies. With too many planets and too formations to roll out the armour across every GAR unit, Special Forces operators have received priority on the latest technological advances, including the Specialised Battle Uniform. Due to the prominence of Sith encountered during their operations, the SBU is tailored both for frontline combat against conventional hostiles, as well as Force-wielding opponents.
