Kaya D’waniis’ Journal, entry #4697

We attacked a small merchant ship today. The Spotted Crown. It was easy, actually. Our crew took no casualties. The other crew...not so much. They were a tenacious lot. Holed up in the cockpit. We had to kill everyone.

Scratch that. One survivor, was hiding in one of the bathrooms. Graw says he’s three years old. Human. Doesn’t seem to realize we just killed his family. Don’t know what to do with him. I’ll kill anyone in the heat of battle, but I’m not about to execute a kid. Pfft. I’ll figure this out later.

What the hell. I’ll keep him. Stupid kid seems to think I’m his mom anyway. Plus, the crew likes him. I think they’ve adopted him as our unofficial mascot. Graw will handle the mundane things, like feeding him. Who knows? Maybe the kid will actually be useful someday. We didn’t have a name for him, so I named him Coron. I...I think it fits.

It was Coron’s 7th birthday today. It’s not his official birthday, obviously, but it’s the day he joined the crew. Rast gave him a blaster Gods, his face...lit up like the sun, I swear. I’m fine with it, now he doesn’t have to steal mine every time he wants to play pretend.

He’s really working well with the crew now, picking up little aspects of everyone’s trade. Graw’s taught him basic medicine, Treesa shows him a bit of mechanic work, Rast is teaching him how to be sneaky - as if the kid needs instruction, I can barely catch him stealing my blaster. He’s gonna be good at that someday.

Coron fell asleep practicing again. The kid’s persistent, I’ll give him that. If he had any natural talent for marksmanship, he’d be the best shot in our crew by now. Oh well. At least he’s hitting the targets now. Treesa was getting tired of waking up in the medical bay. Even on stun, that blaster stings. But he’s not content with learning how to shoot, oh no. Kid thinks he needs to learn how to use a vibroblade, gods know why. I’m not teaching him. He can teach himself if he’s so dead set on learning a useless skill.

Coron got his first kill today. At 10. I’m upset. He’s a child, and no child should have to kill. Not even a pirate.

It was brutal. We were locked in combat with a rival crew when one of them was hit. He snuck away from the fight, the coward, and picked the lock to Coron’s panic room. Coron freaked out and buried his vibroblade in the guy's head. He’s upset about it, which is good. I absolutely draw the line as enjoying murder.

Ugh. I shouldn’t be mad. He did good, and he’s safe. If something had happened to him...gods, I don’t know what I would do. Go insane, probably. Heh. Maybe I’m more into this mothering thing than I thought.

Coron is gone.

We landed on some backwater moon of an even more backwater planet. We were hurt, low on fuel and supplies, and needed to land desperately. I sent him out to get some food when the battle started.

It was hell. Hell! Republic troopers were running up and down the streets, shouting orders, and the Hutt mercs were fighting nasty. Traps, gas, civilian shields, anything to win. I’m pretty sure I saw lightsabers. We lost Rast. The Republic was about to commandeer our ship. We...we had to take off.

We had to leave Coron. We had to leave a 16 year old boy in that hell.

We tried to get him on comlink, but there was no connection. I...I think I’m going to be sick.

HE’S ALIVE!

He’s alive. Coron’s alive. Hurt, but breathing. He sent us a holomessage. I’ll link it to this entry.

*A young, dark haired boy appears in the air. His arm is in a sling, and he begins to speak*

Guys? Guys, it’s me. I survived the battle, obviously. I saw you guys take off. I know you had no other choice. I’m not angry. I was on my way back to the ship when some crazy old Jedi leapt out at me. Blocked a few blaster bolts with his lightsaber and dragged me into a back alley. Told me to stay. I saw you guys take off and figured I would. When the battle was over he told me that I could “use the force”. I told him bullshit, if I could use the force I’d be a better shot. He kind of laughed and asked me if I wanted to harness my powers.

I said yes. I figure I’ll learn what I need to know from the Jedi and then ditch ‘em, hook back up with you guys. Don’t lie, you know you want a Jedi on the crew. I’ll try to find you when I’m ready.

*The boy disappears*

I’m going to leave him. He’s old enough to make his own choices, and it would be nice to have a jedi on our side. He’s been like a son to me, but...I think it’s time to let go. I’m so proud of him.
