Dawn of the Republic: the Galactic Senate

*grins* Lets talk shop when you've got some details @Green Ranger , I've been dying to make a smuggler/information broker character for the site.

I was thinking about making a Republic . . . let us say information analyst. Not a spy or anything so crass and against codes of trust and civilized men. Merely a person who watches for interesting things. And when they see these interesting things, they mention them to friends who may or may not be heading to the Senate chambers in the coming days. Occasionally they find something so interesting they are paid to tell the story. Or - paid not to tell the story. And if I make this character and they get approved, I imagine we''ll be bumping into one another.

Interesting question for everyone wanting to play senator - Do you think your character would be pro/against Jedi/Force Users? Would there be a phobia or would your character encourage cooperation? In the past, this was one of the most interesting aspects of diplomats vs. Force users. Some people trusted them, some didn't, so it led to a lot of cool plots.

I vote everyone hates the Jedi. Cause....Their Jedi????

Hell, at this rate maybe to be antagonistic I should be pro-Jedi instead. >.<

All this talk about Senators makes me almost tempted to rethink my character claims to make one. Of course he'd have to speak with a nearly ridiculous (and nebulous in origin) Texan-like drawl. And on the topic of Jedi he is rather ambivalent - right until the point one of the anti-Jedi senators is within ear shot at which point he will go on and on, waxing poetic, and talking until he's blue in the face about how "them boys n' gals is doin' somethin' m'portant" compared to some politicians.

Pretty much per TAC. I just don't want you guys to come up with a whole speel only to find out the planet you've picked isn't in the Republic, since Republic territories are still TBD. So you just need to be aware of that so you guys aren't disappointed if that does happen.

One question from it I want to pose: what do you foresee your Senator's "issues" being? Brandon suggested in the New Timeline Announcement Board that the Senate will be driving our goals, deciding for ourselves what our faction goals are.

Some of the common ones I have heard from Senators, including a few from the announcements:
- Planetary Borders Disputes
- Economic Regulations and Sanctions
- Support and control of BA militarization
- Republic militarization
- Monotonous, Senate things like Senate Pay, Senate Rules, Senate Regulations
- Ban of Open Carry in Core Worlds (lol)
- Deportation of illegal aliens (lol^2)
- How do we enforce ANY of this?

One thing that we could do is divide up senators into committees which could then go off and do threads, before coming into a main senate meeting and proposing a 'Bill'.

That was things can easily be covered, and then voted on with lots of backroom deals and stuff.

As for how do we enforce this: I assume we have some form of security force to protect the Senate, and funding from member states - so we could always (for example if we wanted border controls) make a border force!

Military/senate relations have always been interesting. Issues to consider would be war crimes, civilian casualties, etc. All of these things get ignored in rp, but it'd be cool to see a timeline where there are repercussions. Influencing media is another, and having it actually play a role with the populous would be interesting. Essentially, I just don't wanna see senators that go around acting important and doing stupid social threads. Unfortunately it's always been reduced to that in the past, so I'm hoping all this enthusiasm will lead to a good set up.

I would be very supportive of having the Senate nominate members to head up a Military Review group, maybe as a precursor to the Republic Supreme Court. I think it would add to the RP, and keep the Jedi and BA mindful of what they are doing.

Also maybe the senate should think about what they should do with the whole force thing. If such a thing is real, and what they should do with the whole religion revolving around it. Considering it is leading to wars I would imagine the senate wanting to address the issue with the war and all.

What's the Senate going to do? Arrest the already independent Jedi Knights with their non-existent galactic police force/military if they tell 'em to sod it?

I think people take this whole "FORCE USERS CAUSE EVERYTHING BAD!" thing a bit too far. It's like this board's IC equivalent of blaming immigrants for the floods.

I would like to see the BA and Senate being separate entities. Or at the very least, they don't like one another.

I'll explain a little bit. I think the BA should have a high ranking official, kinda like a general of sorts. Then the Senate should have like a chancellor or something like that.

Now both the BA and senate are sub factions within the Republic, so i think they should kinda be separate entities. Have their own Authority or supreme power. That way we start of the faction as loosely affiliated, we can have the BA fighting for control of the republic. As they own the military, they are the ones fighting to keep the others safe. Also i think the Senate should want to try and seize control of the BA. They want the BA to serve their own needs, they want the BA to do what the Senate tells them to.

So these two factions will be at each others heels constantly. We will have the republic not only fighting the Sith, but also each other.

I have not fully fleshed out this idea at all, but i think it would add an interesting dynamic to our faction as a whole.

A lot of interest for the Galactic Senate. It will be interesting to see how things go. However, for those interested in being Senators, I challenge you this: What will your Senator do? Sure, there'll be some congressional meetings and maybe a periodic hearing, but what else would you do? From my own experience, it appears the Senate/Moff Council doesn't always work because there's not much to do. Last timeline the only time I recall seeing any Senator PCs being used were when there was a problem and the Senate met to discuss what to do (in order to get a voice in), or when a Senator attended a diplomatic meeting, which tended to not end well. By no means am I trying to dissuade anyone from being a Senator, I'm simply wanting people to think of what they'd do outside the few senate gatherings and parties.

I have a couple ideas for my own stories. Depending if @Jiang Winters is okay with it, I had an idea for a side-plot in which the Republic could try to court Jiang's world that he's working on for next timeline. My character Baronness Sieghart is a noble of that world, and could be its designated representative during those talks (I also plan to have her host a Grand Hunt).

Another idea I've had for a character is a Senator of a conquered world now in Sith control. The character may not necessarily be in the Republic faction anymore; haven't decided yet. I think I would have him be a sort of rebel, trying to do things against the enemy in hopes of one day returning to his home.

I think a big issue that the Senate will have in the beginning is whether to expand or not. Reach out to other worlds and further strengthen our humble democracy? Or shun expansion and focus on domestic and internal problems? My character will most likely support the former. Not because he's a friendly guy(ain't no one got time for good guys in the senate), but because I think that in order to more assuredly keep our senator's busy, we will need to have some sort of interaction outside of our own faction.

This expansion-based foreign policy could lead to many story opportunities with Indie factions and characters, and/or NPC factions and characters(created for missions, of course). For example, let's say an Indie/NPC faction pops up somewhere and the Senate takes note of it. They call a session to discuss the potential ally/threat and the various representatives discuss what is to be done. Characters will find themselves on opposing sides often, which could lead to even more plot opportunities.

I think one thing my senator would seek to do is visit front line troops, which I know is dangerous - but I've been watching the clone wars, and Padme and Bail do it, so why can't I?

Hands on diplomacy is a big part of the senate ;)

While I agree that they will be separate entities I think the dislike would only be on an individual basis.

My senator will also be a member of the BA. So when he is not doing senator things he will be fighting the Sith.

Most of those things are good. I would say I think the open carry thing isn't applicable to the star wars universe. Most worlds don'r even check for weapons and those that do ban them completely. Also the illegal alien thing I don't think is applicable in that form. However a big thing is bias against aliens.
