The typical Jedi Initiate's day begins early, before there is sunlight. Kavin Kalist's starts two hours before the first Initiate rises, his internal clock more precise than any alarm. His pre-morning ritual consists of a meditation session, to sharpen the mind and awaken the conscious, followed immediately by a short, yet intense, workout consisting chiefly of sit-ups, push-ups and pull-ups. By the time he has broken his first sweat, his day is ready to begin. He dressed in the usual attire of an Initiate; a tan tunic with dark brown pants and a simple leather belt.

Every lesson there was to teach an Initiate had already been taught to Kavin, and as such he found his classes became more... Flexible. Around the time that other members of his clan were receiving their masters, Kavin became the assistant to Caretaker Noa, which essentially turned him into a glorified errand boy. Though this did give him the fortune of having near-free reign of the Great Temple, Kavin quickly found his time spent less on meditation and politics than on delivering messages or tending to the younger Trainees.

After his pre-morning ritual, he found his way to Caretaker Noa and was quickly given a list of tasks he had for the day, not one amongst them either stimulating or constructive. Still, Kavin gladly accepted his duties and went about them. The entire morning was spent delivering messages from Knights to Masters, waiting for responses, delivering holocrons or training lightsabers, and, in one exciting incidence, breaking up a fight between two Initiates before the Caretaker managed to notice it.

It was nearly noon before Kavin was free to continue his studies, and after spending all day inside he longed for some fresh air. He collected his meal and headed outside, a short trek soon finding him in a secluded spot not too far away from the Temple. It was a nice landscape; a single, massive tree protruded from an area with fine, green grass and many differing sizes of squat, flat rocks. The tree's massive foliage extended like hands over the area, presenting an area of shade with a few tricklings of sunlight escaping through the leaves. There was a clean aroma in the area, and the chirps of insects and the calls of birds could be heard. This was Kavin's favorite place on Ossus.

He sat upon a decent sized rock and crossed his legs. Before he was to eat, he was have another meditation session. It would be the third of the day, making Kavin more than halfway finished with the required five meditation sessions a day. On his own standard, however, this would complete only a third of his usual sessions a day. This particular session, however, was dedicated not to the Jedi Code or the many fallen Jedi or self-control, but was rather dedicated to the most prominent question on Kavin's mind.

Was he ever going to be a Jedi Knight?

Kavin was the last member of his clan on Ossus, every other Initiate already having graduated to Padawan status. He rarely saw his brothers, who he had grown up with and learned by, but these moments were bittersweet. He knew that as they parted, his brothers were off on missions, risking life and limb to uphold the ideals of the Jedi, and he was stuck on Ossus, where there was neither glory or satisfaction. But such thoughts were unbecoming of a Jedi, and rather than feed into them, he sought the wisdom to overcome them.

And so Kavin found himself meditating beneath the tree, where he, like so many before him, pondered his future.

Peace.*

The one word described the clearing where the Jedi Master sat perfectly. Most wouldn't consider him exactly your ideal Jedi, hell, his choice of clothing showed he wasn't your cookie cutter monk. A brown leather jacket over a white shirt with BDU pants and a pair of brown boots wasn't considered standard Jedi kit. His lightsaber was clipped to a belt on his waist, some wear evident on the durasteel cylinder. However whilst he may have not neccesarily looked or always acted like the ideal Jedi, the Light Side shone in him like none other.

The man sat back on his heels with his hands on his spread knees in front of him, his eyes a vibrant blue as the Force flowed through him. Another being entered the area not far from him. It was either a padawan or youngling, the signature too weak to be a knight, or so he hoped. Some questionable people had been granted knighthood too soon in the past and perished on the battlefield or succumed to the Dark Side due to their lust for power because they were not yet prepared to deal with either. Valen had dealt with both, slaying many a Dark Jedi and Hutt soldier in his time. Growing bored with his meditation, he decided to be friendly. The middle-aged master blinked once to mark his exit from his meditative trance and his eyes returned to their hazel color.

When he saw the young man meditating beneth the tree he figured it'd be best if he spoke to him telepathically first, so as not to completely destroy the boys meditative efforts. He'd likely feel Valens approach, a shining beacon of the Light Side's warm embrace. It is possible that he would have heard of the infamous battle-hardened, Republic loving Master before, his reputation as an experienced leader and skilled duelist preceded him. *

Hello there. I am Master Cross. I sense strong feelings of worry within you, boy, what is your name and what is wrong?*

A powerful presence drew Kavin from his thoughts; had he not noticed it when he entered the grove? As the Jedi Master's words telepathically reached Kavin, he at first took advantage of his perfect memory to identify Master Cross. A memory of class passed through him, an explanation on the valor of lightsaber combat. The Instructor presents examples: valiant Guardians and Warriors from all eras brought to life by hologram. Several Jedi Masters are presented before reaching the brown-eyed Valen Cross, his image frozen in battle stance.

Kavin's interested was immediately piqued, the child inside of him jumping around in joy. His boring, monotonous lifestyle, for which he was entirely grateful, often brought him the pleasure of crossing paths with some of the wisest and experienced members of the Jedi Order. Some of them shared stories of their travels to the Initiate, and through their tales he tasted what it was to be a real Jedi. However, not once had one of these figures been the one to approach him, and never had they asked him of his thoughts. Kavin stopped his meditations and looked up to the Jedi Master.

"I apologize if I have disturbed you, Master Cross. I am Initiate Kavin Kalist, and if you wish I can meditate elsewhere." As the Initiate spoke he rose from his kneeling position to standing and held his arms behind his back.

"No, you're not interupting me, please stay for a moment."

A slight breeze drifted through the clearing where the Jedi stood, bringing with it a slight chill and the scent of the woods around them. Valen's lightsaber shifted ever so slightly as the breeze came by and his medium length hair danced as the wind flowed past. The Jedi Master studied the boy, his face even desipite a sliver of confusion. He was old enough to be begining his trials for Knighthood, or so it seemed to Valen. *He remembered how he was at that age. An ideal padawan, master of the core powers and a promising lightsaber adept, in addition to being seemingly incorruptible.*He*let a slight chuckle slip past his lips.*

How things had changed.*

The fact that Kalist had introduced himself as an initiate meant that he was masterless. Well, Valen just happened to have finished his last padawans training a few weeks prior. The differences between the students was astounding. Kavin had probably grown up almost entirely in the Order, spending the day bouncing between harmless drills and different classrooms. Lance, on the other end of the spectrum, was a former Special Operations soldier for the Republic that'd proved to be a natural with the Force and a ridiculously quick learner. Valen turned and motioned for Kavin to follow him.*

"Come. You're an initiate, without a Master, and I'm a Master, without a student." Valen began as he walked towards the temple entrance some two hundred yards away. "Give me a rundown of your skills, Kavin, so I know where you stand before we begin, if you'll accept my training that is."*
