Explosions rocked a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, Wednesday evening as firefighters were battling a fire, causing multiple injuries, authorities said.

Dani Moore, dispatcher with the Texas Department of Pubic Safety, said she did not know how many were injured or the extent of their injuries.

"The fertilizer plant was on fire. Firefighters were on the scene. There was an explosion ... followed by a second explosion,'' she said.

She said there were multiple damages to structures and vehicles. She said she had no information on the cause of the blasts or fire.

WFAA.com reported at least 10 structures were on fire, including a school which is next door to the plant. An emergency triage center was set up at a high school football field.

The TV station said on its website that a shock wave was felt in parts of North Texas.

The Waco Tribune reported injuries to several people including firefighters.

The fertilizer plant is about 20 miles north of Waco and just off Interstate 35.

KWTX.com reported one of the nearby buildings damaged was a nursing home, and state troopers transported some of the injured to hospitals in patrol cars.

It also said the explosion knocked out electrical power to part of the community.

Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco, was receiving some of the injured. Answering the phone at the hospital, Karen Jackson said she could provide no information on the number of injured or the extent.

An explosion at a fertilizer plant near Waco caused numerous injuries and sent flames shooting high into the night sky on Wednesday.

Department of Public Safety troopers were using their squad cars to transport those injured by the blast and fire at the plant in West, a community north of Waco, Gayle Scarbrough, a spokeswoman for the department's Waco office, told television station KWTX. She said six helicopters were also en route to help out.

The explosion at West Fertilizer was reported shortly before 8 p.m. in a frantic call from the scene, KWTX reported.

A West Fire Department dispatcher told The Associated Press that any casualties would be transported to hospitals in Waco, which is about 90 miles north of Austin.

The explosion knocked out power to many area customers and could be heard and felt for miles around.

Brad Smith, who lives 45 miles north of West in Waxahachie, told the station that he and his wife heard what sounded like a thunderclap.

Lydia Zimmerman, told KWTX that she, her husband and daughter were in their garden in Bynum, 13 miles from West, when they heard multiple blasts.

"It sounded like three bombs going off very close to us," she said.

Per a youtuber comment:

Ugh yeah let's throw the kids in the car and take them to the toxic chemical fire at the flamable fertilizer plant. Yee Haw Texas! The stupid is bigger!

The only thing I have to say on the matter is that a fertilizer plant explosion is serious shit. You might find the outcome to stink.
Like, really, you could have your whole day just go down the toilet...

The explosion was caused by a missile, apparently. There are numerous videos on Youtube showing an object clearly striking the plant. In the videos whatever hits the plant 'hovers' for about a milisecond before exploding mid-air. I just think the blast on the side is a smaller tank which ignites a larger tank of ammonia nitrate. The reason the smaller explosion happens is because the wind is blowing the heat into it, there's a loud high-pitched whooshing noise before the explosion, which sounds exactly like a missile before it explodes. It's either that or pressure being released from the tank.

What do you guys think this is? A lot of people on /pol/ are saying it was a drone attack. IDK, I don't really care but it's pretty interesting.

This is just a disastrous week for the States. The Marathon Bombings, the Senates lack of action on gun legislation in response to the shootings and now this.

****ing hell.

Please, do tell that youtuber commentor to go **** himself.
It's a small town and the explosion(s) were massive. Of course there would be children hurt in the blast and living in the town, pulling them away to live with extended family elsewhere just because it's a chemical plant is similar to sending your kids off because you work in a government building or military base that is a prime target for dangerous sh*t to happen at. As per the Boston bombs, dangerous sh*t happens everywhere, to anyone. Accidents and murders have no respect for age, race, or background. A bomb explodes, a plant goes up in flames, if you're inside, you're dead. Mourn these people, find out what happened, see how we can prevent it from ever happening again and keep your damn sarcastic mouth shut.

Also, I agree with Endling on it likely being a blast on a small tank side that ignited a larger tank.

This is just me, but being that close to a fertilizer factory on fire like the cameraman in the youtube link in the first post seems a tad... er.... stupid to me.

This is probably just bad luck/an industrial accident. It's not like things haven't exploded before when volatile things catch on fire after all. The youtube comments are about what I would expect too, the one where someone's claiming a bunch of "disposable rednecks" getting killed is no big deal seems to stand out.

According to the news, it was a small town called West. Waco is not a small town. Waco is about the same size as Pasadena, Texas.

It's north of Waco, but the media is likely using Waco as a point of reference (since people are so familiar with it) and because it helps their ratings. "Explosion in Waco!" is going to draw in a lot more people than "Explosion in West!"

My thought is about people who send their elderly parents to live in the nearby rest home. I lived in Amish Country...they liquefy the crap and shoot it over the ground. That was 200 acres on one side of the main road through town, AND 200 acres along the other side of the only road through town. The fumes alone can suffocate you.

Tuesday was the anniversary of the ending of the Waco standoff, also the day of the Boston Marathon.
