Hi all. New to the site, but not to roleplay in general. Been reading the rules, character creation guide, races, places and all that. I have to admit it's all pretty intimidating, but exciting at the same time. I am currently working on a character and hope to have something posted soon!

Welcome, stranger.
Only have one tip for you: steer clear of @Prudence.

Cheers.

Thanks.
It would seem that I came at a time of transition. I am not too sure how to handle a time jump.

In the meantime, where can I find more information about ranks within a faction?

Here's the current info from each of the main factions: Republic, Empire/Sith, Jedi

Be aware that with the time skip the info on these pages is subject to change. If you have any questions I recommend reaching out to the Faction leadership.

From what I have been reading, the Republic will be dissolved?
What is the view of taking on a Padawan / apprentice? I read a few threads where it was a bit discouraged due possible complexities.

I ask because if things are going to jump ahead 5 years, I need to be thinking 5 years in the past at this point.

Well in case you aren't aware, all characters created are allowed to start at the rank of Knight (or equivalent depending on faction.) So, most simply bypass the padawan process. If you'd like to start as a padawan you are free to do so! However, it might be challenging to find another writer who wants to train your character. I can't speak for the rest of the site, but my personal view on Master and Apprentice RP is it's one of the most complex story arcs you can undertake. Not because of the content, but because it required writing partner. Having a story that's dependent on anther writer can be frustrating, so i'd recommend waiting a little until you find someone you like to write with and know won't be leaving anytime soon.

I'm going to tag Jedi FL @Wit just to make sure I wasn't wrong on anything. Hope this helps.

Nope, you got everything spot on!

Also, as the time skip is happening today I'd suggest simply planning for a character that starts out after the skip. Don't need to plan out a character for before the time skip, simply start using him after it and plan for then. Makes things easier for you.

That is very true.
Would it be permissible to start as a padawan now (with some sort of NPC jedi master). Do a bit of social RP, then the time jump happens; pop into the bio what happened in those 5 years and have a Jedi master character?

Edit: oops, didn't see your post Wit. I thought the time jump was occurring on the 23rd? Did I read that wrong? If it is the 4th, then ya, I'm not bothering with pre/post time skip happenings.

Yes, the time skip is happening today. So you can create a new character and start using him from the get go right now!

As for starting as a Padawan, I'd suggest starting with a knight and then if you still want to try the Padawan route giving it a try with another character once you're settled in. The reason behind that is that we've seen Padawan being very limiting on RPing opportunities, particularly in the setting right now. Padawan simply limit how much you can do with the character.

Upon retrospection, given the nature and high degree of interaction between a padawan and their master, I would have to agree. I don't think that is something I am ready to undertake at this point.
I will plan to either have a full out knight, or nothing at all, and go from there.

Edit: I just want to make sure that what I do, is within the parameters set by the site and community. I don't want to rock the boat!

Awesome, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with a Knight! We're at a place where you will find a lot of scope for fun stories with a jedi, whether you make a more aggressive character or a more passive traditionalist one!

Well, I am working on the bio now. And as I flesh out his past, his personality is taking shape!

Welcome to SWRP!

Doing a master/apprentice thing is definitely hard, especially if you don't do it with someone you know well with whom you've previously roleplayed. Also, not a lot of people are up for taking an apprentice.

Anyway, after you make your character, if you wanna do a thread to get you introduced, feel free to shoot me a private message and I could help you out with that!

Good luck!

Some of us love doing training threads! There are plenty of Jedi willing to take on a student, just don't be afraid to ask.
