they canceled firefly due to fox putting it in the death slot Friday nights around 9, to 10 O'clock, when most kids and teenagers who would most likely watch the show were out of the house. They also aired the series with the second episode first and the pilot last leaving casual watchers confused who weren't hooked on it at first sight.
Lastly as soon as people started getting use to it in the death slot Fox also moved it around the time slots so no one basically knew when it was on, making its ratings suck even more and fox finally canned it.
