INFERNO SQUAD
[fancybox4="http://i.imgur.com/Je47VEQ.jpg?1"]UNIT DESIGNATION: Squad 545

NICKNAME: Inferno Squad

ROLE: Special Operations

SIZE: 4-12

DEPLOYMENT: [Classified]

With the formation of the Grand Army of the Republic and, in turn, the creation of special commando teams, inevitably came the individuals and units that would carve for themselves a reputation as some of the Republic's most efficient and elite defenders, whether for efficiency and valour, or through cunning and brutality. Inferno Squad would be counted among them.

Raised from the official designation 'Squad 545', the unit carries a short, but violent history. Twice now - on record - have all members been killed-in-action. Yet, despite this grim reminder of the risks that the men and women of GAR undertake, Inferno Squad, and its newest members, will soon undergo another baptism of fire.

WHAT IS IT?

The intent of Inferno Squad is to provide a dash more cohesion to the characters and theme of the Grand Army of the Republic. By having characters be part of such a thing as a squad it automatically provides them with numerous hooks from which they can interact and develop alongside of fellow Republic characters. It also provides a simple, but effective and immersive way of getting newer members and their characters into some roleplay, being as simple as them being the latest soldier assigned to said squad.

It fits the thematic well given that the Grand Army of the Republic is- well, an army. With the playable GAR characters being able to and capable of performing assignments solo or in pairs (PvP, solo threads, other activities) anyway this doesn't contradict what is in place now either, but rather builds upon it. A lot of events occur off-screen here anyway, therefore it's not unreasonable to assume that the squad is either off-screen and/or the character was plucked from their unit to perform whatever task they were ordered to away from them.

Well, that's the theory anyway.

When a member signs up for Inferno Squad they include a specialisation for their character. As special forces soldiers all characters are assumed to be trained and at least somewhat efficient in most roles that may be required of them (battlefield first aid, demolitions, heavy weaponry, vehicular, etc). This means that if a character is unavailable they are not left - perhaps literally - stuck in the mud and unable to go forward. For characters who do possess a specialisation however this is really their opportunity to shine. It adds a feeling of competency and belonging, whilst also throwing a bone to say... the person who was looking forward to playing a medical professional, or an efficient, cold marksman. Especially in the PvE orientated Mission Packs this can really shine.

More than just a way of organising potential mission-runs and other threads, it also serves to add a bit more of a focused 'metaplot' of sorts to the characters. The intent is for Inferno Squad to serve as something of a character unto itself; naturally building a background, a timeline of notable deeds and a reputation as one of the Republic's most respected and feared units.

ORGANISATION
[fancybox4="http://i.imgur.com/1fwfN2P.jpg"]As you can probably tell, Inferno Squad is geared towards very military characters. These are generally the sorts that are in the Republic faction already, but there are exceptions. Any characters falling under 'GAR Lieutenant' are assumed to be GAR Commandos and thus fit right in. Certain Agents would as well. Really, it depends on your character and how well you see them working in a special forces unit.

Inferno Squad is neither tailored to be PvP nor PvE focused, however given the nature of combat-ready, military-themed characters it's reasonable to assume that most people gear their creations towards going down the former path anyway.

Fireteams are intended on being flexible, both in numbers and on what roles characters specialise in. Maybe nobody plays a demolitions expert or a marksman, for example. That does not mean the post goes unfilled, so much as another 'specialisation' appropriate to who is taking up the name on the roster. For example...

Fireteam Aurek

Team Leader - Skahl Krusair
Electronics - [...]
Demolitions - [...]
Marksman - [...]

Inferno Squad is currently in the concept/maybe-(A)FLs-will-think--its-a-bad-idea stage, though the meat and potatoes are here for your viewing pleasure. Absolutely don't be afraid to post with your interest, opinions, etc.

Count me interested. Having a specific unit for GAR characters to be a part of and working together could really help out.

Would there be room for a guy who is just really good at shooting stuff, though not necessarily very good at teamwork? I may not archive Atol Hass after all.

I'd be interested in throwing Dardan Krandar in there as a medic, potentially as an involuntary transfer due to his past. I know he isn't posted yet, though that's for a number of reasons with the least of which being I'm not sure what I want to do with him yet.

That's hilarious. There are some writers that believe ideas exist outside our minds, in the ether...if one writer doesn't bring the idea to creation, like a receptor, another mind will. Like scientists throughout history, simultaneously creating a hypothesis independent to one another's research.
Potential to Actual Reality.
See! You have a great idea! Publishable even!
