[sounds of running] "This is RSF security offer 7781! Halt in the name of the Republic! I repeat! Halt!"

[laughter: SOURCE UNIDENTIFIABLE]

"Don't be a fool! We have you trapped in a cordon of officers! Surrender, or we’ll shoot to kill!"

[laughter: SOURCE UNIDENTIFIABLE] "RSF officers don't scare us, do they boys?" [more laughter - many sources] "Get back to your barracks officer, or you're a dead man."

“Well, I tried Bloodhound... Support needed! Lethal resistance on my coordinates! Immediate” [gunshot]

“Shit I dunno, blast ‘em all!” [many gunshots can be heard, several incoherent radio transmissions from surrounding officers, then silence]

“Dude, we gotta get outta before the heat turns up again!”

“I know I know, There’s a getaway ship not two clicks from here, lets go.”

[END OF RECORDING RUNBACK]

Well, where to begin. I know you officers have managed to get yourselves stumped, this being the only piece of evidence. I understand that, to the untrained eye there isn’t really much to go on... Which is why I’ve stepped in to help. This “Bloodhound” has intrigued me for some time now, his attacks on your RSF officers becoming increasingly more frequent. I know there’s no concrete evidence for the other attacks, but I’m sure we’re agreed that there have been more.

I have a theory for why he is targeting you, and I have several ways to prove said theory. Furthermore I believe that during these proofs, there is a good chance of catching this “Bloodhound”. The problem is that they require a risk on at least one of your officer’s parts, and the chance of capturing him is not 100%. I would need your full cooperation on this matter if we were to succeed.

I leave it to you, gentlemen. Will you accept my help? We’ve worked together in the past and succeeded, but if you have any problems then please, don’t hesitate to ignore this message. Just know that if you choose to work with me this little problem would be over before you knew it.

This “Bloodhound” was very unlucky to get recorded in this manner. He’s got a large gang, and from what I can tell has to work hard to remain the leader, probably some sort of primitive “Alpha male” society. If we present him with the choice, he’ll think with his balls rather than his head. This means that my trap will work, but there’s no point in letting the RSF get complacent. I can’t undertake every case I’d like to, they do have to be able to solve something...

By my predictions he’s most comfortable in his little pack of followers. Once we’ve taken him out of that comfort zone, I’m confident he’ll crack and tell us how to round up the rest of them. He’s just like any of the others, he just got a lucky break and rose to the top of their pile. If I don’t get a challenging case soon, I fear I might go mad from the boredom. Where are all the super-genius-mass-murderers when you need them...

RSF SECURE FILE NO. 66382

RE: L’s Latest proposition. [WARNING: All views expressed in this file are entirely personal, and cannot be deemed factual for evidence-based purposes]

We don’t know much about L. He’s on our side, that much is for sure but apart from that frankly pathetic scrap of knowledge we know almost nothing else. No-one’s ever seen his face, whenever he communicates with us it’s always either via go-between or holo-link. The only reason we know he calls himself L is because it’s what you get if you contact him via hologram, and he told us.

As for what we’ve gleaned from working with him in the past, there isn’t much. He’s arrogant, believing himself to be the single greatest detective in the galaxy. We don’t know if he’s right, there are hundreds of crime busting prodigies out there, but he’s certainly a contender. He also chooses his cases very carefully, we don’t yet know his criteria and we can’t even reliably approach him with one, as no-one knows his whereabouts and the holo-link he uses is untraceable.

He knows a disturbing amount about our classified files. We’re not sure if he’s working it all out by himself or if he’s hacking us. Someone could even be leaking to him... we have no way of knowing; he never leaves a trace, he just knows.

We don’t really know why, but he never seems short of money, morale or ideas. He’s most certainly what you’d call a genius recluse, maybe he has some business or another that funds his crime fighting. I certainly wouldn’t put it past him. As for his motivation, perhaps the guy had a nasty experience while he was young or something, or maybe it’s just what he wants to do. If that’s the case, I dread the day he decides to do something else.

The top brass would be idiots to pass up his offer. Right now, what with the damned war eating up our resources and draining our resolve, we could use all the help we could get. He’s probably got some plan that can wrap this entire case up in a day or two, and with his help it would require a fraction of the manpower it would if we were to do it our way. I’ll be sending them my recommendation immediately.

RE: Your Proposition.

Very well L, you have our cooperation in this matter. We’re assigning you a team of three RSF agents, but we can’t spare you any funds. We’ll give you a week to finish this debacle cleanly, after it’s up we’re sending in a sweeper team. I’m sure that won’t be necessary though... Your record speaks for itself.

Good luck, L.

I thank you for your reply, general. I’m sure the trio you send will be more than adequate for my designs, and I assure you that a whole week will not be necessary. I’ll have Bloodhound in custody by tomorrow evening, Once I do I’ll contact you again and send him your way with the three agents as an escort.

It's a nice break from my main character to go solve some crime. I don't use him much, but there may be something in the works soon.
