Like a Good Neighbor...

Mission 3:
Like a good neighbor..
Nearby our world of interest, Hamlad, is another populated planet. G'wenee is a major trade partner due to its proximity to Hamlad and takes advantage of it to obtain wealth. Their private military is fairly strong to maintain relative independence. We need to make sure they will not threaten our holding at Hamlad. Go to Lay Pa-Sidian on G'wenee and show them we are good neighbors.

    • Objective: Ensure that our neighbors will not cause security issues for us. Try to be diplomatic, but we will have to get creative if they prove hostile. There is no room for Sith sympathizers in this mission.
    • Conflict: The strongly independent people of G'wenee will resist us verbally and won't be afraid to resist us if we use force.
    • Reward: Final step to capture the square
The planet was long ago overtaken by the progress of production. What was once lush fields of vegetation and alien life was replaced with layer upon layer of concrete, steel, and buildings. Hovercars went about, people in them going about their days, days which were equally as confusing, as tiring, and as real as everyone else's. Among it all, however, was a ship that had dropped off four people. Alone, it wasn't noticeable, for it was one of thousands (if not more) that visited the planet every day.

So Vera stood with her compatriots, her feet bare against the cold, artificial ground, her skin's red and blue hue bright and piercing against the gray overtown of the city. They had just exited the space port, when Vera let out a cough. Smog was in the air, and while it wasn't in any large amount, Vera was unused to it.

The city of Lay Pa-Sidian stood overbearing before her, threatening to overtake her with its vast, foreign existence. Looking back at her companions, Vera blinked. "You three ready?"

It had been a little while since her last mission, and even longer since her last mission with so many of her fellow Knights with her. As they departed the vessel, the purple skinned Togruta glanced around with green colored eyes. The sights, the sounds and the smells were all very much like Coruscant with its towers of durasteel and duracrete, buzzing traffic and smoggy air. When she had recieved the initial information o the mission, she had not known what to expect on their arrival, but after researching the location another Coruscant like planet was not what she had expected.

Amaarla at last turned her attention to Vara and nodded. "I'm prepared. Do we have any initial contacts?"

Thelonious shifted his grey cloak so it fell upon his shoulders better as he got off the passenger ship with his three compatriots, two Togruta and a human. They were known to him within the order only in passing, this would be the first time he would be working with them. He sighed as he tried to center himself in the bustle of the city-planet, not an easy task in any case. However they were there on an important mission, one that would give the jedi a strong foothold in this sector of the galaxy.

Thelonious turned towards the others and said, "Yeah, I'm ready. I wasn’t told who we were going to meet though, I was kind of added last minute to this mission."

Vera nodded as the other Jedi approached, one with a question, the other with more of an explanation of her cluelessness. "Well, our mission is to ensure that these people do not support the Sith." She explained. "As well as try and get them to allow Jedi presence on this planet without scorn." She continued, using her hands to emphasize words.

Around them, they were getting glances, for probably obvious reasons. Many probably knew who they were, recognized who they were a part of, either by the way they acted, the way they spoke, or simply by hearing about the Jedi that would be arriving through some source. Word got out fast, because the wayward glances began increasing in number. Fingers were pointed, and scorns and scoffs were given in the direction of the group. "And I shouldn't have to tell you that the Jedi aren't exactly very good friends with the people of this planet."

She began to walk, motioning for the other Jedi to follow her, her bare feet took a brisk pace through the semi-crowded streets. "We've been set up with a meeting with local officials. We're hoping that we can convince them to allow Jedi presence on their planet. If not, then we need to find a way to convince them." She continued simply. They passed market stalls and cantina's all filled to the brim with the people of the planet.

As Vera walked, she frowned to herself, thinking. While she had been on planets like this before, huge sprawling cities... It still seemed off. She was born in a tribe, and didn't know a blaster rifle even existed until just a few years ago. Her first meeting with the outside galaxy was not a good one. Looking out of a cage to the view of her planet fading away into the distance, all while she was unaware that there were more planets, or the fact that what she was staring at was her home.

Yet, here she was. Still wearing the same type of clothes, yet working for a new cause. No longer hunting for food and to defend a small tribe. Now, she fought for different reasons. For peace, for what she believed was right, and to help the whole galaxy, a place infinitely larger than she had thought it was just some odd years ago.

The purple skinned Togruta nodded slightly as Vara spoke. Her green eyes taking in the scene around them. It was clear from some of the passerby that they were not trusted, even disliked. It was unfortunate and she had to wonder what it was about them, about the Jedi, that these people were so against or if it was simply that they did not like any outsiders. If it were the latter, then the Sith having any hold here would be less likely.

The Togruta speaks quietly to her companions. "If the locals here view all outsiders the way they view us, it may be a good sign as they wouldn't see the Sith with any more favor than they do us." The Jedi Knight kept alert to their surroundings and any possible hostilities. Amaarla's barefooted steps nearly inaudible amidst the sounds of the city.

Though she did not favor such packed and urbanized worlds, she knew many of them existed. Having a far different background from her fellow Togruta, Vara, she seemed more acclimated to such environments, or in the very least accepting of them. "We should approach things slowly, gauge if there is anything we can do for them to build a raporte."

Thelonious sighed inwardly so as not to show his discomfort about being assigned a diplomatic mission. It wasn't that he was antisocial or anything, but rather that he just disliked politics, especially interplanetary politics. They were the source of many a headache, just take the current state of the Senate and their foolish attempt at diplomacy with the sith. While he aplauded the Senate's attempt at peaceful negotiations, Thelonious had a feeling that this would only end in one way, there was just too much bad blood between the Sith and Jedi for it to be anything else.

While lost in his thoughts, Thelonious was oblivious to the unwelcome glances the locals gave them when they spotted their lightsabers. Thelonious was used to such glances because of the scarring that his Eczema had left him with. He shrugged the felling of pessimism that he had earlier and kept an eye out for the delagation they were supposed to be meeting with.

Walking towards a tall and imposing building, Vera and her companions managed to exit the crowd of unwelcoming glares. It seemed they had passed into a more high class area, species of all kinds wearing nice, expensive clothing that the common person couldn't afford with a years worth of credits.

Vera felt even more out of place. The neat, artificial streets not meant for her bare, no doubt dirty feet. The narrow streets of cobblestone that she once knew were replaced by the boards of neon light that she now walked on a daily basis. She missed it, she wouldn't lie. She missed the simplicity, she missed the hunting, she missed the ignorance.

When they entered the building that towered over all others, Vera did not know what to expect. Would they be accepted by an actual guide, or would they be distracted and pushed to the side, ignored like a small itch.

The lobby was large, strikingly white, and empty. Furniture of some upperclass design filled the empty, flat space, as a multitude of noticeable, obviously placed camera deterred any would be thieves. A man sat at the front desk, a Twi'lek man, with purple skin and a neat, ironed suit on. He did not move from his paperwork as they walked in.

It seemed that Amaarla had been assigned to a rather subdued group for this mission; not that she particularly minded. Thelonious, who she had glanced over at from time to time as she and Vara spoke, had chosen to remain silent. She got the sense that he was not particularly comfortable with their current mission; something that she might have to ask him about later. Meanwhile, her other companion Vara seemed to carry herself in a way that gave the impression that their surroundings were not quite what she was used to; just a bit out of place. Her green eyes continued to observe what was in front of them, glancing here and there from time to time.

When they got closer to their location, the demeanor of those around them seemed to shift noticeably. The buildings were in better repair, cleaner, and the people were more richly and colorfully dressed. Clearly, this was a higher class part of town and the change in outward attitude might have been influenced by that as well as the diverse number of races that seemed to be here going about their business. After entering the towering building, she had to squint her eyes a moment against the clean whiteness of the lobby before she took a look around at their surroundings. Amaarla noted the Twi'lek receptionist and gestured her comrads' attention to it before stepping over to the twi'lek and his desk.

"Excuse me? We're scheduled to meet with someone."

The Twi'lek receptionist looked up, annoyed. "Oh, and who might that be?" She did not even wait for an answer actually, giving them looks up and down. She then went back to her console, looking down through eyewear at one of the screens. "Let's see..." she mumbled something after that that may have been in Ryl, and that may have had terms like raggamuffin or scoundrel, followed by a more clear mumbling of the basic word Jedi. Again, mumbling to herself though. "I don't know if I have you down for--"

She was eventually interrupted. And this was not a voice that was timid or uptight or mumbling. It was a booming male voice, coming from a rather rotund Twi'lek with a blue-ish skin and as lavish of robes as those the Jedi had seen thus far in the main city sector. This man's lekku were not as visible, especially given his large nature. "A nonsense, Nan'se." He said a not-so-cruel swear towards her in Ryl. "Give them a break."

The man smiled even more broadly as he went over to Amaarla who had asked the initial question. Two human, two Togruta. And now one big Twi'lek. "Greetings, Jedi. Welcome to G'wenee. We are pleased to have you." Something was strange. He was either high on something, maybe just having had intimate relations with someone, or was doing a great job of faking his emotions. In either case, he seemed way too jovial for the occasion. And yet, his feelings were genuine if anyone bothered to pry a bit.

"I am Prefect Gar'ul." He bowed his head in lieu of extending his hand. "I was informed by some of my colleagues that you would be coming." He left it, awkwardly, at that, looking at them with his silly grin, waiting for some sort of a reply, right there in the lobby.

Thelonious hardly paid much attention to where they were going, but rather on potential threats of which there seemed to be plenty. However his vigilance seemed to be for naught as most on G'wenee seemed rather reluctant to pursue open hostilities, which was a good thing for them. As they entered the building, the female Twi'lek receptionist was visibly annoyed by their presence, much like most of the population of G'wenee. As she tried to make trouble for them, a booming voice interrupted. The Twi'lek introduced himself to the group with a rather over enthusiastic manner, considering how most of the rest of the population viewed them. It was in his words however that Thelonious caught the uncertainty and mild dislike for the Jedi. There was obviously something more to him than the jovial nature he presented. Thelonious would keep his silence and an impassive visage until he felt the need to intervene. It would not do to be careless in his words especially for this particular mission.

"Greetings, prefect." The tribally dressed Togrutan said as she stepped forward. "I am happy that you have been able to meet with us. You see, this is a rather important matter." She explained, using her hands to emphasize what her accented voice could not. "You see, we believe that a mutual pact could be reached between us. We are aware that popular opinion is against us here, and we wish to... Rectify? This problem. We are not bad people, and we wish to prove it to your citizens."

Vera's explanation probably wasn't the best. Her limited experience with Basic held her back more than usual, as persuasion became harder when she spoke in this language. But still, the blue and red Togrutan had tried her best, and, hopefully, her companions would attempt to back her up or explain further.

Some hostility was expected from those here on the planet, but the receptionist's reaction still caused her to blink once. Her brow furrowed a little, perhaps prepared to respond when another voice entered the exchange. Amaarla's green eyes shifted to focus on the plump Twi'lek. There seemed to be something off about the man and as Vara spoke, she studied him.

She stepped up when Vara was done speaking. "It's our wish to establish a ong lasting friendship between our peoples and we've come to see how we might begin to build such a relationship."

The fat and jovial Gar'ul would nod as they spoke. He seemed to know what they were asking and why they were here, and yet he did not react to their requests. "Of course, that would make sense." He looked back to the secretary and said something under his breath. It was in Ryl but too quiet to hear.

The man turned back. "Let us move out of the entry way for some privacy. I have a spot reserved for us." An ever-so-slight sense of anxiety might be picked up if one were paying close attention. He moved across the lobby with big steps, about as graceful as a Rankor. He went to a bank of lifts and pushed a button. The tower had many floors and there was presumably a spot up high that would give them a nice view of the city.

"Now then," he said, hefting himself into the lift car that had arrived. "Do you know much about G'wenee?" The man waited for the Jedi to enter and then pressed a button labeled B4 - evidently they wouldn't get that view. "We have endured much over the years, even since the wars ended long ago. We are fortunate to be able to forge relationships such as what you propose today."

"I can't say I know much about the planet." Vera admitted, rubbing the back of her neck. "I'm not very well versed on the galaxy, you see. But I'm sure your people have a rich history and culture, as such a beautiful place like this would have." Vera replied quite simply, taking in the view before it vanished once more.

The situation seemed normal enough in its progression, even if the plump twi'lek seemed to have had a little too much alcohol, or something else. That changed, though, once they were in the lift. The button the twi'lek pressed would not take them up, as one might expect to find the office of a political leader, but instead it would take them down. In the closed in space, the sense and smell of anxiety became sharply evident compared to wehre they had been in the large open area. There was something not right here.

"Indeed." The word came out to be in agreement with Vara, but her body language shifted a little, saying something else to Vara, her fellow Togruta, if she were to notice; a warning to be alert. On Shili, hunting and surviving was done most successfully in groups. The ability to read another's posture was key to that when verbal communication was not readily possible. Despite Amaarla's shift towards cautious suspicion, she does not move either hand closer to her lightsaber. She does, however, focus more of her senses in the Force on the twi'lek to pick up something more clear on what was going on; emotions, thoughts and so forth.
