DESCRIPTION
Unlike its predecessor and despite its name, the MBT-12 is not a main battle tank in the traditional sense of the word. Instead, it is a fire support vehicle, and can provide both direct (like a normal tank) and indirect (like artillery) fire support. The primary weapon is an extremely high-velocity railgun mounted in the turret. This gun launches projectiles capable of going in the side of an AT-AT and going out the other end. In other words, it is lethal and highly effective. The railgun fires armor-piercing and armor-piercing high explosive shells. Alongside the main gun is a smaller cannon for taking out light vehicles so that the extremely limited ammunition for the railgun is not wasted. This secondary gun fires armor-piercing, armor-piercing high explosive, high explosive, and Advanced Multipurpose rounds.

This immense firepower, however, comes at an immense cost. Firstly, the railgun generates a lot of heat when fired. Although this seems like a small problem, it is not. Once the MBT-12 fires its main gun, the weapon barrel and heat vents will light up like Christmas trees on thermal displays. Anything within six or seven feet of the barrel that is not properly protected will be incinerated by the muzzle flash, which also 'whites out' the crew's thermal/night vision and targeting displays for a few moments and can easily blind people who look at it without proper eye protection, especially during the night. To drain this excess temperature, the tank has ten heat vents mounted in a raiseable section (officially called the 'power supply chamber' that takes up the back half of the turret and also houses equipment that powers the main weapon. These vents (when hot due to draining excess heat) are capable of causing second to third-degree burns to anyone within three to four feet for up to a minute after firing, and touching them will literally disintegrate the item in contact within little more than half a second. Another effect of the railgun's heat generation is that the weapon, which is loaded by an autoloader, has a low rate of fire to avoid overheating. The secondary gun is manned by the gunner and loaded by an individual loader.

The railgun also affected the tank's armor. Due to the weight of the heat management equipment, the sides and rear of the tank are relatively weak and can be penetrated by an E-Web round or two. The front is of average strength. The power supply system can be raised and lowered, but the railgun cannot be fired while the section is in the down position. The vehicle also lacks dedicated anti-infantry weapons.
