New to the site, not the saga

Hola friends,

I'm a longtime Star Wars fan through movies and most of the periods covered. The Great Disavowal of the EU was very disappointing, but Force Awakens went a long way to helping me come to peace with the change and Rogue One looks to be in the same vein.

I've written Star Wars on and off over the last several years (roleplays and stories), and have been looking to get back into this recently.

Dawn of the Republic looks to be the right blend for me of immersive and active without being hyperactive (as I do have a life and a family, and five posts a day is simply never going to happen); needless to say I'm very excited.

I look forward to getting to know you all, and keeping reading around the site.

I won't rush to make my character. I want to get a sense for people, factions and plots if that's possible, and find a Codex-shaped hole to fill instead of dropping in a premade character sublime in their perfection - and just as perfectly boring as they have nothing to do with anyone else.

Besides, there's no rush. And there's so much story to enjoy!

Thanks @Deviant - that would be great actually! I've been reading up on the various factions (mostly Republic and Indy so far) and though I still have a load of reading to do I have a couple of questions on played vs background.

In the Republic, I notice the main groups that people apply for are the Republic Army and the Senate. Are these the main areas of the faction that have many played characters, or are they more broadly spread?

I haven't actually read enough about the Sith or Jedi yet to know the exact questions I'm asking there, but are most of their played faction members force users or non?

History-wise, what's happening "now" across the known Galaxy?

Essentially I'm asking for what I'd know if I'd already been here a month or two - or if I kept reading for the next few days. ;)

Am I right that most PCs tend to be fairly combat capable? Is there a lot of pvp around the site? Or only in the battles?

Characters within the Republic are rather "broadly spread," as you put it. The Senate is well-nigh devoid of activity, but the Galactic Army is still quite alive. Though most characters aren't force-users, that doesn't mean you can't be one either way.

Most utilize the force. Of course, the Sith Brotherhood has their own sub-faction of warriors known as the Sacred Band of Ziost, for those not interested in role-playing with the force, though I believe you might have already known that.

The Sith continue to advance across the galaxy in spite of prior failures on vital opposition worlds such as Lothal. The independent Death Watch has risen into prominence and is now in the midst of battling it out with the Republic for control of Mandalore. And on the other hand, the Jedi Order is a tad lethargic atm due to reduced activity, same might go for the Republic, but they're both still more than welcoming for newer members such as yourself.

Indeed. You're quite right! There are a number of Open threads that consist of genuine PvP (alongside OoC threads rife with bickering), but that shouldn't be something to worry about. Same goes for battles, as I mentioned above.

Great to be here, though it's taking longer than I'd hoped to write up my character. I do know where I'm going with her though, and with luck she'll be ready to roll before the end of the timeline. ^^
