DESCRIPTION
The NM series is a model of astromech droid manufactured by the Ferroprol Corporation. One of the company's more popular offerings, the NM is primarily used aboard starships, where they are used as co-pilots, replacements for navicomputer systems and/or to undertake repairs and maintenance. Though not as popular as models produced by Industrial Automaton, the NM has carved out a niche for itself.NMs are barrel-shaped droids, equipped with a host of tools and sensors to aid in their assigned duties. Locomotion is provided by a single ball-type wheel, similar to the system used by BB-series droids, although the droid's equipment is not integrated into the wheel as with IA's design; as a result, freedom of movement remains comparable to the BB series, while mechanical complexity is reduced. The NM's physical dimensions are more comparable to older astromechs such as the R2 series.
NM-series droids cannot speak most organic languages, although they can understand them. They instead vocalize in droidspeak, or through text when connected to an external network or vehicle. Like most astromechs, NMs can communicate directly with and run diagnostics on myriad computer systems, as well as affect physical repairs and calibrations. Most notably, and again as with most other astromechs, NMs can function as a substitute for a dedicated navicomputer aboard hyperdrive-equipped starships; starfighters in particular are commonly equipped with an astromech socket rather than a dedicated navigation system.
