Why? One word. Oprah. Before she came along Obama was nothing special, just another dude running for president...who happened to be black.

Now that Oprah's run around yelling out "i'm not voting for him because he's black", and not to mention the rather subtle 'Vote for Obama' crap that's she's spreading everywhere, people not only have sat up and said 'Oprah approves, so we'll go with what she says', but at the same time the view of Obama has changed. Instead of being the guy running for president who happes to be black, he's the black guy who happens to be running for president.
