Hiya,

I was just wondering what it took to get a character through the ranks. Do I have to offer IC reasons for his promotion or do I have to be deemed trustworthy OC in order to obtain that rank?

Can a character start as a commander? Or must they start as a Trooper?

Just wondering as I'm considering making a Republic character, a older, more grizzled soldier who fought in the Border Alliance before being transferred to the Army on Coruscant before it fell. During that even he proved his worth and was inducted as a higher ranking commando.

Or something like that. Just wondering if it was possible for a character to start as commander or squad leader for IC reasons. Idk, it could work without that.

Basically, whether or not someone starts off as a squad leader or commander is up to @Calixis and my discretion. But to answer your question in more detail, we typically need to see a certain level of rp skill to award the rank of squad leader or commander from the get go, and the character sheet must demonstrate a certain level of quality.

Traditionally, the rank of commander would be awarded by working your way up the ranks IC

Ranks are based on a mixture of IC and OOC merit, however primarily the former will feed into the latter so to speak. If you're an active, decently written, contributing member of the faction then you are far more likely to be eligible for a promotion up the ranks than you would be if you filled in the monthly activity check and then posted once or twice on that character. IC ranks, however, do actually depend quite a bit on the character in question. You could be the most active member, pumping out a hundred posts a day of pure gold, but if you write your character as an incompetent, anti-authority, useless goof then odds are he wouldn't be taken up the ranks to a position of Squad Leader. A character who has actually shown leadership ability in threads will obviously be far more likely to make the cut than one who hasn't.

I feel it's important to point out that ranks this time around are not meant to be a 'reward' as such, so much as opportunities to people play out their character in different ways. If it makes sense for a character to be leading troops and that is the route they want their (wo)man to take, great. If not? Just as fine. That's why there's only three of them, coresponding with the different, broad categories of leadership (Grunt -> NCO -> Officer) than a whopping great chart to work up.

To answer your question more specifically, yes, it is possible for somebody to create a fresh character who may receive the position of Squad Leader/Commander right away. As you say however, there is an element of 'OOC Trust' that plays into this and the 'amount' required will scale with the ranks. The vast majority of characters who will be approved will join as Troopers. To join up at higher ranks, we need to be able to see consistent activity and a good quality of roleplay from said person, as well as a character who could conceivable fit into that rank if they suddenly turn up in the next thread with a few more rankings on their shoulder. A twenty-something pretty boy with daddy issues is unlikely to make the cut, whilst a forty year old veteran with a backstory and personality that fits the bill quite possibly would. This is decided on a case-to-case basis and is intended to be somewhat rare, but not impossible.

To cut a long story short however, it's unlikely we'd dole out Squad Leader/Commander to a newer member - you only joined on Tuesday - unless they presented both exceptional writing immediately and an excellent character and even then, we may decide to run them on a trial period first to ensure they don't flake out or some such. My recommendation is you start off with Trooper however, and see where it goes from there. Hell, even longer-playing members are unlikely to get it unless they've already been playing a character in the faction already. This isn't meant to be a mark against you, but if we weren't extremely strict with this then I'm willing to bet the majority of potential members would want to begin as a Commander because, hey, that's just what most arrpee'rs are like.

I guess I just have to prove myself through my actions :)

I'll probably get a character sheet up by tomorrow or something, I would be honored if you guys came in and gave me a couple pointers? If you look at my other character sheet's comments, you'll see that I'm not the most familiar with the lore of the current time period (I'll give the lore a read ofc, just in case i miss anything).
