Appearance and Build:
Remiel's jet-black hair was once worn loosely; freely flowing down the back of his neck and reaching his shoulders. This hairstyle is common amongst the upper-class of the Miraluka. However, he now keeps his hair short and prim, reflecting his new visage and his hatred for the Miraluka and their nobility.

Due to the unique genetic makeup of Miralukans, Remiel lacks any eyes, instead, he has two empty sockets of flesh where eyes would be on other sentients. All Miraluka are Force-sensitive and Remiel, like the rest of his species, uses the Force to see and witness events in the material realm. To conceal his lack of eyes from passer-bys and civilians, Remiel occasionally wears shaded spectacles that hide his trait from others. This habit was not developed out of embarrassment, rather, he would prefer not to attract attention when on a mission or performing reconnaissance.

Remiel always wears a tight-fitting, green-colored fibermesh suit to protect him from blaster fire. Over his suit he is often seen wearing a large overcoat, although sometimes he chooses not to wear it. Although he once wore a hat atop his head to cover his mess of black hair, he has since lost it and does not care enough to buy another one.

On his right hand, Remiel wears a bracelet that contains a golden trinket. On this trinket is the symbol of House Vaern - a long sword crowned with a wreath of sirpar - surrounded by silver trimming. On Remiel's homeworld, noble and bourgeoisie households participated in bitter rivalries, and each member of every the quarreling house wore a bracelet to honor his clan and affiliate himself to a particular family.

Personality, Likes, and Dislikes:
Remiel has a strong sense of duty, and is willing to forgo his safety and the safety of others to complete hazardous missions. Remiel has a zealous sense of honor and loyalty due to his upbringing on Alpheridies and is willing to lay down his life for his superiors should they be in danger. During combat, Remiel steels himself to keep his men in line and his emotions in check.

On the other hand, Remiel cannot abide traitors and those who forsake their responsibility, and clearly shows distaste for them. Again, this is due to the honor code and strict lessons in loyalty enforced on Alpheridies. Remiel has a general loathing for those who aren’t Force-sensitive, regarding them as inferior beings and lacking the capability to defend themselves. He holds the Jedi Order in the highest respects, literally viewing it as the supreme form of government in the galaxy. When around other Force-sensitives, he will publicly express this hatred, though it often makes him unpopular.

Remiel enjoys spending time with others and keeping himself constantly busy. When he does find himself alone and with nothing to do, he either tends to monetary matters, listens or plays music, or practices his skills with firearms. However, Remiel loathes untidiness and has a distaste for 'barbaric' or 'uncivilized' combat, and prefers honorable duels and chivalrous engagements unless the mission specifically requires assassination, stealth, or espionage.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
Remiel's greatest strength is his skill in monetary and mathematical matters. He can easily apply this skill to all aspects of combat and tactical planning; Remiel uses these skills in performing tactical readouts, organizing troops, organizing income and expenses, and working out slaving profits.

On the other hand, Remiel's major weakness is his blind devotion to his allies and friends. Though he says otherwise, he follows others like a sheep, not questioning orders or taking the time to think them over. He will even trust his life to an enemy if the situation demands it, not thinking that he will be betrayed as soon as the situation turns in their favor. When he is betrayed by an ally, especially a superior, he is frequently crushed and distraught; betrayal sparks a heavy emotional backlash in Remiel.

History:
Remiel Vaern was born on Alpheridies to Lord Mithraos Vaern and his lady, Leisa. A pureblood Miralukan and the third son of Lord Vaern, Remiel was the only son of Lord Vaern's second consort. His other two brothers, Azrael and Uriel, were the sons of Lord Vaern's first wife, who had perished by the time Remiel was born. Because of their parentage and the fact that their father favored them, the two elder brothers treated Remiel poorly.

The Vaern family was one of the seven royal houses of Alpheridies, and had a long-running rivalry with House Berex, another noble house that had been competing with the Vaern family in the cruiser and freighter production business. Their competition got so fierce, in fact, that they participated in violent raids against the opposing family's estates and factories. This violence led to Remiel being trained in combat - the ability to operate and properly use a firearm was key - at a very young age. Remiel was also taught to control his Force sight early, because without this ability, a Miraluka would be blind to the natural world. Since his first lesson in the Force, the young Miralukan became enamored with the Force and its power, even though his connection with the Force was minuscule at best. Despite his father and older brothers had a strong Force-sensitivity, he had inherited his mother's inability to use any sort of complex Force power.

When Remiel was fourteen, he participated in his first real brawl. The Berex family, led by Lord Berex's cousin, Aldiro Berex, and his two sons, attacked the Vaern household while Lord Vaern was away in an attempt to capture their servants and hold them for ransom. Remiel and his older brothers led the defense of the house, and during the ensuing madness and constant streams of blaster fire and pistol slugs, Remiel was challenged to a duel by Aldiro's son, Kardno. While Kardno drew his bladed-staff, Remiel utilized a fallen servingman's short spear. During the resulting duel, Remiel's right leg was wounded and scarred, though Remiel managed to land a deathblow by striking Kardno Berex in the sternum. Shortly after his duel ended, the Berex family retreated and Lord Vaern returned to assess the damages.

Though Remiel had previous experience in piloting small craft, Remiel's brothers taught him to pilot a starfighter in orbit to utilize in bombing runs against the Berex family. Later, his father attended to his piloting lessons, himself a former starfighter pilot in the Republic naval forces. Though Remiel's skills were not nearly as good as his father’s, he managed to prove himself a decent fighter pilot, and assisted his father in several shipping runs into Republic space prior to the Alsakan Crisis.

After Remiel turned seventeen, Lord Vaern decided to eliminate his competitors once and for all. Leading all his family and servants to the Berex manor, Lord Vaern invaded the mansion with the intention of slaying the entire family and laying waste to their property. Almost immediately, several of Remiel's cousins and uncles fell to the security turrets utilized by the Berex family, though Azrael managed to slay Lord Berex's three sons and nephew, successfully eliminating all his descendants. Lord Vaern's youngest brother, Cratus Vaern, raped and killed Lord Berex's wife and three daughters, much to the disgust and disproval of the rest of the Vaern family. Lord Vaern told Remiel to kill Cratus for the shame he brought upon his family, but when Remiel approached Cratus to strike him down, Remiel found he couldn't kill him and let him escape Alpheridies with his life.

Lord Berex had contacted the Republic for aide against the Vaern invaders, but no help arrived because Lord Vaern had bribed the local navy to turn a blind eye to any distress signal sent from Alpheridies. Instead, Lord Berex faced Lord Vaern and his family alone. Though Lord Vaern challenged the Berex patriarch to an honorable, one-on-one duel, his sons wouldn't allow their father to be put in danger, and while the two lords dueled against each other, Azrael used a silenced slugrifle to wound Lord Berex so his father could slay him with ease. With the entire Berex family destroyed, Remiel and his brothers razed their late rival's estate, burning it to the ground and enslaving any of their surviving servants.

Even though Lord Vaern was pleased with his victory over the Berex family, he knew that they had been defeated dishonorably. He ordered all his family to commit ritualistic suicide to cleanse themselves of this horrendous sin, but Azrael and Uriel had grown too strong and too independent to risk their lives for their father any longer. On the night before this mass suicide was to take place, Azrael entered his father's chambers and killed him in his sleep, suffocating him before his wife awoke. Then, Uriel raped Remiel's mother - Uriel's mother-in-law - and Azrael killed her as well, throwing her off the rooftop of their mansion. Though Azrael and Uriel had a desire to kill Remiel also, they decided against it; even though he was their half-brother, he was still more loyal to them than their father and was still their kinsmen.

The following day, the people of Alpheridies mourned for the death of Lord Vaern and his wife and they were buried in the Hall of Ancestors, a massive mausoleum built for Miralukan nobility. Azrael, a gambler and murder at heart, made a deal with his two brothers. Instead of squabbling over the inheritance and estate left for them after their parent's death, he proposed a wager. Each of them would leave Alpheridies, one year apart from the other. They would not contact each other, and they would not go out of their way to find each other. However, they would work up as much credits as they could in ten years time. If one brother randomly found one another during his travels, he had permission to kill him as he saw fit. However, at ten years time, every surviving brother would return to Alpheridies and whoever had the most credits would inherit all the riches of House Vaern, the other surviving brothers could either be enslaved or killed on the spot.

Though it was a risky gambit, each brother accepted, though Remiel was deceived by their trickery. Unknown to him, Azrael and Uriel would work together to gather as much credits as they could for four years, then they would send assassins and bounty hunters to scout, search, and track their brother. After they located him, his brothers would kill him and divide the inheritance of House Vaern and House Berex.

Azrael left first, leaving that year. After a year went by, Uriel left as well. The following year, Remiel prepared to leave Alpheridies. By this time, Remiel was already nineteen, a common age for Miralukans to venture offworld and make a name for themselves. However, several days before he was scheduled to leave, he was approached by Cratus Vaern, his demented uncle who had sexually abused and murdered the wife and daughters of the late Lord Berex. Cratus - now nearly insane - had grown weary of his life and was eager to kill Remiel and then kill himself. Before he challenged Remiel, however, Cratus shared a secret with his young nephew; he revealed Remiel's brothers' plot to trick and kill him. Enraged, Remiel refused to believe his uncle and dueled him, eventually grievously wounding him and disarming his uncle of his blade. Though Cratus begged for mercy, Remiel refused to pardon his sins this time; brandishing his rifle, Remiel pointed the weapon at Cratus' skull and killed him instantly.

Once he had left Alpheridies behind, Remiel hoped to get a job as a Republic mercenary or a freighter pilot. Traveling on a civilian transport with only a handful of supplies, he set off from his homeworld, determined to best his older brothers and earn his share of what was rightfully his. Knowing his brothers, he knew they wouldn't adhere to the law and would probably take up illegal activities to earn credits. In the same vein, Remiel decided that the law was a hindrance to his objective and was determined to bend the rules to make sure he succeeded.

Remiel got several jobs performing spice runs across system-borders for Hutts and small-time gangsters and thugs; by the time he was twenty-two, he was certain that he would be the one to win the bet his brothers had established. However, a steady stream of bad luck followed, and Remiel ended up losing a lot of credits trying to bribe Republic inspection officers and avoid trouble with other smugglers and mercenaries.

Eventually, Remiel found himself at odds with the Republic. Uriel had learned of Remiel's underworld exploits and he utilized his position as a Republic intelligence officer to track down and send security forces after Remiel. After several run-ins with Republic agents on Fondor and Corulag, Remiel was finally captured by Republic forces at Anaxes. Taken to a Republic detainment facility at Ichium in the Core Worlds, Remiel was interrogated and tortured by orders of Uriel himself. However, Republic High Command discovered Uriel's abuse of power and stripped him of his position and rank and Remiel was freed.

During his stay at the Republic prison, Remiel had learned that his brothers did, in fact, desire to kill him and were unwilling to fulfill their end of the deal. Heartbroken, Remiel didn't know how to deal with the situation other than to flee from his violent kinsmen. Avoiding Republic space, Remiel constantly conducted business in and around the Rim Worlds and Alsakan space, where the Republic had minimal control over the individual sectors, at best.

Following the outbreak of the Alsakan Crisis, Remiel began to concentrate his smuggling efforts around Alsakan space. It was during one of these missions that Remiel met Venator Furtificus, an Alsakan Major and the Direktor of The Skeleton Guard. After a brief introduction and quick training exercise to determine his skill, Remiel was invited into The Skeleton Guard. Appointed to the rank of Slave Master, Remiel began to prioritize his agenda and carry out slaving operations throughout Republic space, mostly for rich nobility and black marketeers. Eventually, Remiel applied for the Alsakan military to aide their war effort, and was trained by the recently promoted Lieutenant Furtificus. After several dealings with the Republic and the Jedi, Remiel proved his skill and mettle and demonstrated his loyalty to The Skeleton Guard. Venator, apparently pleased with his performance, was appointed to the rank of second-in-command after the loss of their former Deputy.

Promoted to the rank of Alsakan Lieutenant Commander for his assistance in minor Alsakan missions and for his work in The Skeleton Guard, Remiel used his new found influence and rank to benefit himself and the Union. Training several new recruits for the Alsakans, Remiel made sure to train them so they would know the basics of war and etiquette without being too complicated or demanding.

However, he was eventually cornered and left for dead - buried alive - on a desert world when he was ambushed by bounty hunters. The incident scarred him both mentally and physically, and he returned to the newly-christened Raider's Coalition a new man. He no longer had qualms about killing the only brother who remained in his way.
