Not the most intelligent nor the dumbest person you could ever meet, Rens has a mixed combination of boldness and stubbornness that tends to get him into trouble quite often. He makes up for it with putting his whole heart into whatever he does...well most of the time. While he is a talented pilot and hard worker, Rens Ahim is still a young man. One who deals with youthful flaws such as a reckless need to prove himself when feeling insecure. Then when you add his line of work to the load......
Despite his past ignorance with various galactic cultures and faced with constant setbacks, he can is a fast learner with street smarts. He also has a stubborn tenacity to survive and even overcome. One of the most defining traits about him is that of a dreamer. He desires adventure above most things, to explore the wonders and mysteries out among the stars while making some kind of living. It is at times a struggle for him to put those two goals into balance.
Aside from all that Rens loves having fun, whether it be gambling in an causal game of sabacc, playing some music with his violin, pulling a daredevil prank, or getting happily wasted in an drinking game.
While Rens is a Mon Calamari, he feels more kinship with the planet Onderon and its people since he was born and raised there even though he had been mistreated by some for being a non-human. Of course Rens has a growing curiosity about his species and their homeland, layered within in his adventurous dreams. The Mon Cala is more talented in thinking on his feet than devising complex plans.
As a person, Rens Ahim isn't someone you could rely on for sage wisdom or be leading a fleet of warships for that matter. However, if you want someone who sincerely cares and will have your back in an job or during trouble, he's your guy...as long you're willing do the same by him.
In the end, Rens Ahim wants to show others and...himself that there is more to him than being just some "fish-face".
Rens Ahim was born on Onderon to a Mon Cala couple that were migrant workers. The family had been planning to earn enough credits to become wealthy then return to their homeworld when tragedy struck. Anti-immigrant riot had broken out in Iziz, one night in the capital and a massive mob attacked and destroyed several poor neighborhoods that housed migrants like the Ahim family. Rens' mother was burned alive in the fire that consumed their apartment while his father was beaten to a pulp then lynched by the violent crowd, trying to save his five year old son. Rens would've been killed as well if it wasn't for the Royal army that went in and quelled the riot.
Personally saved by one of the guardsmen, Rens was taken into custody along with many other orphans by the state since the boy had no other living relative in the system. Shortly afterward, they were sent to various orphanages across the kingdom. Rens stayed in the Iziz branch, raised by an elderly human woman named Meta Nefertari. The orphanage and its occupants was all that Rens knew as family throughout his childhood.
He constantly got into mischief doing stupid stunts all over the city and the nearby jungle, often pulling pranks on people with his friends. Ironically he developed a knack and passion for various forms of music under the guildance of his legal guardian Meta, learning to play violin style instruments in the process.
Eventually though, those friends all were adopted and that left Rens alone out of the original group at age 17. During one incident he gotten chased by a gang of bigots. In order to escape he sneaked into a YG-300 light freighter called the Galactic Phoenix( which was the personal property of a Duros smuggler named Valik Viridux. Accidentally, Rens Ahim ended up as a stowaway when the Phoenix left Onderon. By the time the smuggler discovered Rens it was too late to turn around, since he was busy with a supply run to the Outer Rim.
So Valik allowed Rens to stay onboard and work to earn his passage until they returned to Onderon.
During that time together however, they grew into a surrogate father and son relationship and decided not to go back. Valik unofficially adopted Rens though the old Duros claimed he was only training a new partner...they both knew better. Viridux taught the young Mon Cala many things about the spacer's life, how to use blasters, fly a ship, repair said ship, fight dirty, even speak some languages enough to get by with. For Rens who had always desired to travel the universe, this was a dream come true and they went through several crazy adventures/misadventures together.
Yet Valik came down with a sickness that he couldn't recover from. Before he passed away in Rens' arms, he made his partner, the new captain and owner of the ship. After the old Duros' death Rens had Valik's body cremated as requested. After mourning for a time, the young Mon Calamari made some peace with his mentor's death and then began his solo career.
Six months has passed since that time and Rens Ahim has already earned a wild and reckless reputation in a few systems of the Outer Rim. He had made several successful jobs along with a near equal number of setbacks and doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon.
Post Time Skip:
Five years since the fall of the Republic, Rens Ahim has grown and so has his reputation. From Nar Shadda to Ryloth, the young Mon Cal made has bazed a daring trail of theft, pranks, and other reckless stunts in his quest for adventurous freedom. He is considered one of the most daring smugglers in the underworld, part of the infamous "Wild Generation" running rampant across a galaxy at war.
