I thought I would offer some advice on how to properly create a decent and yet simple thread for roleplays, missions, and other story/faction items. All of us who create a thread for the above areas should put a bit of effort into them, as it does not take a whole lot of time. So below are some recommendations as well as a sample thread and its code.

Prelim Work
It takes a few minutes, and maybe a few extra tabs in your browser, but have some items ready to link out to before you proceed.
  1. Know the player usernames (@ username) ahead of time
  2. Know the character names being used in the RP
  3. Know any NPCs (and their player usernames)
  4. If this is an assigned mission, have the link of the mission and its details ready
Thread Creation
Using the example below, I highly recommend you follow these steps to create a great thread for your RP needs. They are rather simple steps, but will ensure folks see an engaging and soothing entry point into their part of our story.
  1. First, find a good image and have that there. This is just going to give a great visual impact for the thread. And note that some people even create their own, or put up mini Star Wars crawls or other creative items. All this sets the tone, although it of course is not required for the desired effect. It sure helps most of us, though.
  2. List the RP title and subtitle. The subtitle might just mention which mission and/or faction this is from, and may not always be there. Sometimes this is unnecessary given the thread title is named appropriately.
  3. Give the location and maybe a timeframe if applicable.
  4. List the users involved as well as their character names. Same would apply for any NPCs you wish to credit. Include character names, as many players have multiple characters.
  5. Give an intro to the RP, which may just be a copy and paste from a mission assignment.
  6. Optionally link to an OOC thread where players can openly discuss the RP.
  7. Add your first bit. As the thread creator, you get to go first if you wish, so add your character's bit in there as the first "post".
If you follow these guidelines, and maybe use a template like the one below, you'll grab your readers right off the bat and make everything clear up front. I hope this was helpful, and I welcome feedback as well!

I'm Here to Rescue You
Death Star Rescue, Rebellion Mission
OOC Planning thread

@Marcus (Luke Skywalker), @Brandon Rhea (Chewbacca), @GABA (Han Solo), @Green Ranger (various NPCs)

The Millennium Falcon was captured by the Death Star while in the remains of Alderaan, leading the ship's crew, Han Solo and Chewbacca, to hide with their passengers. In order to escape, Solo and Skywalker posed as stormtroopers, allowing the group to make their way to a hiding place within the Death Star. After Kenobi left the group to shut down the station's tractor beam, R2-D2 discovered that Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, who had provided the droid with the Death Star plans, was aboard the station, being held within Detention Block AA-23. The group decided to rescue the princess and made their way to the detention center...

The group had been disguised, and made they way to the detention center, purely on luck... and some good blaster shots. But now the threat was becoming a heavy reality as REAL stormtroopers were on their way down. The group had little time. Luke went down and found cell 2187 and opened the door, fully clad in his armor and blaster still. He was sweating under that suit - it was hot, he just came out of a firefight, he had no idea where his friend and new mentor Obi Wan Kenobi was, and now he was about to meet this mysterious princess. It was all he could do to keep from bursting out in raw anxious emotion.

The door to the cell opened and there lie a woman in white, complete with buns in her hair. She was beautiful, and he examined her for the few seconds it took her to respond. If they had done any torturing or any other abuse, it was not noticeable.

"Aren't you a little short to be a stormtrooper?" she asked, quite sarcastically and rudely. She came to a seated position.

"Huh?" said Luke, realizing she had no idea who he really was. "Oh, the uniform." He removed the helmet. "I'm Luke Skywalker, I'm here to rescue you."

"You're who?" asked the princess incredulously.

Luke was still on high from the adventure of the last few days, and the battle of the last few moments. He stepped forward, most likely with a goofy grin on his face. "I'm here to rescue you. I've got your R2 unit. I'm here with Ben Kenobi."

Leia wasted no time coming to her feet. "Ben Kenobi is here! Where is he?"

Luke merely nodded and said, "Come on!" She took his hand and they went out into the hall way. Little did he know is that they would have company any second now - and not for blue milk and sand crumpets. They had to move now!

I would also add that images are especially crucial for PvP duels as they provide a much clearer understanding of the "arena" than simple literary descriptions can. They eliminate vagueness and inaccurate interpretations of the battlefield (to an extent), and prevent people from inventing environmental advantages for themselves out of nowhere.

I don't really think images should be a hardline requirement. If someone in a PvP fight in space or in a forest or in a field really needs an image to have an understanding of what the venue is so that they don't try to create advantages for themselves, then it's not the only thing they're going to try and manipulate in that situation and FL's should consider slotting players that aren't of that variety into their PvP missions.

...then it's not the only thing they're going to try and manipulate in that situation.

This statement is speculation at best. Anxiety at worst. And, while we all acknowledge that the PbP genre is indeed a text-based experience? There is no accounting for taste. Thusly, feel free to include, or ignore, images at your leisure. Marcus was writing a guide and an invitation. Not an addendum to the top rules.

I might suggest that one embrace this thread as a suggestion. Not a rule.

I made the edit that the image is not required, it just helps most of us. And as Jessica said, this is in RP Help not the rules.

I'll be honest, I prefer a lot more detail in my opening posts. Only because I'm a very visually-minded person and having a good image of the scene in my head helps me to form a reply. You just get straight to the action, there's very little description or telling what the mood or setting is like.

That's just me though, I just really like detail. Some would call it fluff, but for me it enhances the aesthetics and mood and overall makes responding easier and more pleasurable.

It's also not necessary to list the title in the actual thread, or link an image. Describe the imagery in the post. Music helps though, I find.

but y'know, I'm the resident weirdo who thinks action is about as interesting as drywall.

I'm trying to do something like this with my threads this timeline. Images help set the scene, especially if you're like me and are not the most descriptive writer. Music is also more to each there own. I personally don't use it in my threads cause what works to set the mood or scene for me might not work for others. In any case this is not a bad example of how to start a thread for those that are newer here.

yeah my opening posts have a habit of turning out like this.

Speed RPers hate me, lolol.

Thats what builds the story in my opinion. If someone just goes oh this is whats happening lets go then it isn't as fun. But if it details of where we are. The planet, temperatures, scenery populous if any, smells and so on. All describing the 5 senses the. It to me is better

I like pictures in opening posts, helps me visualize the terrain. Also, I've already found that something as simple as a hallway can sometimes be very different in people's minds and may have an affect on how the rp turns out. In the docking bays mission, we had to have a whole ooc discussion of the hallway so everyone was clear on where all the characters were in relation to each other Link Here
