DESCRIPTION
The equipment used in an average shockball match can be broken down into three key components: the glove, the padding and the cesta. The glove is simply an insulated off hand the player can use to pick up a ball or deflect it as a last ditch effort to avoid full potential shock. The padding is similar to those used in other sports which functions to cushion the blow if players run into each other, fall from great heights and other potential hazards during play. The cesta is the most important part of a player’s gear and is the only part unique to shockball. It is specifically designed to catch incoming shockballs no matter their speed, measure the speed at which in came in, then accelerate it to the same speed upon throwing it or at a slightly higher speed if the ball was thrown by an enemy player.
The glove, will be a theme ith this equipment, is only useful in the sport. Outside of the sport it is ill equipped to handle any taxing labor and though it is made of good materials, prolonged exposure to the elements will ruin it. It’s only unique quality is insulation but even this is only useful for handling the shockball specifically and cannot serve as a substitute for proper electrician’s attire. The insulated glove is available for public purchase but it is not necessary for casual play as in those matches normal balls of wood and rubber are used.
The padding is also very basic. It’s main goal is to ensure players don’t suffer career ending injuries while play and only takes into consideration possible events during play. In other words, it is useless in protecting against any weapon be it bludgeoning, piercing, slashin, burning, explosive, ion etc. The most it could potentially do is lower the effectiveness of an incoming punch. Even this is limited in its use however as for movement purposes there are large parts of the body that lack any form of padding and this provide very obvious weak points. Padding available for the public is often just generic sports padding as casual sports rely on the honor system and does not require sensors to signal when a player is hit.
Finally the cesta. It’s only practical application is in Shockball. While the other two components could have at least a very basic merit above no equipment at all, this is not the case for the cesta. It’s large, cumbersome and occupies the user’s entire main hand. It cannot be easily dropped and serves no purpose in melee combat. Even it’s acceleration and deceleration technology can not be applied to other objects as the item is so fine tuned that any foreign material will almost certainly ruin the hardware inside rendering it useless. Cestas can be found in several sporting goods stores though they are a little pricy for the middle class demographic and all public use cestas are designed to never throw a ball over 20 mph in stark contrast to professional play where a Shockball can travel as fast a blaster bolt.
In the GSL all teams use the equipment provided by TyrChom as they have exclusive rights with the GSL. In the JSF and AGSA each school/franchise chooses its equipment provider from the list of approved manufacturers. In the underground shockball scene the teams can make their own equipment but they are all checked by the game’s hosting patron before play. This often leads to hefty bribes tolook over code violations.Local leagues often operate on abring your own equipment basis.
LEGALITY
Legal everywhere.
INTENT
To provide a generitech writeup for the equipment used during a professional shockball match and to highlight the differences between it and more practical gear such as armor and weaponry which it cannot substitute. This was write-up was recommended by @Loco.
ADVANCED TECH
These items are commonly found as cheap substitutes in various sporting goods stores.
