The House of Tyris has an ancient and noble history. They were originally the most powerful and wealthy of all the noble houses. They traditionally had the greatest swordsmen, which led to many victories in various disputes during the early days of Mortisite society. Eventually, peace reigned as king and violence was limited to only a few altercations. Yet the Tyris family still remained the most prominent family, with the greatest number of planets and supporters. Their strength came mostly from their ties with the Church of Mortis.

Because the House of Tyris was one of the Churches strongest proponents and benefactors, the Paladins of the Church were willing to do anything for the Tyris family, and of course such devotion was encouraged by the Church leaders. Obviously, few would dare to openly defy a rich noble family with the full backing of the most powerful force-sensitive warriors that their society could produce. There was unfortunately a great deal of jealousy and even hatred aimed towards the House of Tyris, by those who saw favouritism on the part of the Church. This led to bitterness and further discord between the royal families, and sadly the alliances that once held the people together, slowly weakened until there only existed a few fragments of the Great Society of ancient times.

The Tyrises, the Swyfts and the Andrians became the three most powerful landowners. The Tyris family had the most wealth due to it's continuous favoured position with the Church. A vast majority of Mortisites supported the Tyrises, and they became indisputably the most widely respected of families. Though not everyone appreciated the peace and unity which was produced by the reign of benevelant rulers such as the Tyrises. Not all Mortisites were content to let that good and noble family take first place, in terms of power and prominence. Some desired power for themselves.

The Swyfts, in an attempt to change the balance of power, began to use their members to subtly manipulate the discussions on doctrine and policy within the Church. They each introduced new ideas into what used to be fairly routine and perfunctory discussion of holy texts. Was the Son really as bad as some texts suggested he was. Was the Son really to blame for the Mortis family being exiled from the physical universe?
Eventually, a new religion began to rise, one that put more focus on the Son, who represented the dark side. This weakened the near unanimous support that the Tyris family once enjoyed, as some people began to apostatize from the 'overly simplistic' original doctrine of the Church. This eventually led to greater trade opportunities and favours for other families, such as the Swyfts for example, that formerly would have been given to the Tyrises. The Swyfts slowly and insidiously lured people away from the once pure religion, and before long the Blackguard of the Son arose, a lethal and dangerous group who would kill any who dared to challenge their leaders (who were mostly made up of the Swyft family).

((Note: Here is an additional thought. I would suggest that the Blackguards throughout history wore masks during ceremonies and battles, to conceal their identity, therefore some could secretly serve the Blackguards and then still live within the normal society that supported the Church of Mortis. If they survived the battles of course. There could have been massive surprises when certain dead Blackguards were unmasked... This would have bred further suspicion between members of the Church, leading to even greater disunity throughout Mortisite history.))

It was not a coincidence that during the periods of each Blackguard war, many of the Swyft family were not seen in public. And after each war, many of them had disappeared altogether. (It is rumoured that a record of the names of those killed in battle, on both sides of the war, has been kept locked away somewhere. Why the secrecy? Nobody knows..)

During the Blackguard wars, each time that prominent members of the Tyris family fell in battle, the Swyft's silently cheered (even those who had not joined the Blackguard), biding their time until they could one day become the foremost of the ruling families.
Although many are aware of the rise of the Blackguard group and its religious doctrinal foundation, very few realise the Swyft families role in this, and the political power game that lay behind it. This would not be the last time that religion would be the cause of division and warfare in the galaxy.

The fifth Blackguard war was initiated by a member of the Swyft family, who arranged for the initial attack that began the war. This happened at a time when the Mortisites were living peacefully, with the Tyris family as the most influential and wealthy once again after a century-long period of rebuilding.
The Paladins of Mortis came close to complete destruction during this war, and the Tyris family line itself almost ended.
The Blackguard who killed the Grand Patriarch and Grand Master was in fact Persephone Swyft, husband of Homer Swyft. Though only Lady Helin knew this, and she kept it to herself in an attempt to keep the peace in future and not stir up further animosity between the families, also to protect the feelings of the woman's young daughter, Jade Swyft.
