Where does one begin when describing Darrand Cresta? His family? His Friends? What defines him as a person? Is it the role he plays as an Operator in the ISA? For Darrand, it is the lives he saves, the good he sees himself doing. Twisted though that idealism is. Nobody is the villain of their own story, after all. A genuinely kind man, Darrand does not seem the efficient and ruthless operator one might expect. Out of uniform, he seems downright cheerful, often found spending time with his friends and family. To him, all he does is to keep them safe. He enjoys reading, often found reading the classics of times past, edited, of course, for proper Imperial studies. Had he grown up outside the control of the Sith Empire, he might well have found himself a philosopher or teacher. Perhaps even he would have become a Sector Ranger. But instead, he grew up within the Empire, and thus he was taught that strength means everything, that one must have power and order, that it free thinking is good in limited amounts. He was taught to follow the rules of law, to seek out order among the chaos of life. And so, he joined the Imperial Army. To keep the people of the Galaxy safe, to spread the rule of law and order amongst the stars.
Within the Imperial Army, Darrand flourished. Order and control, tight schedules, training. They helped him, kept him organized, kept him busy. Not initially slated for anything more than a position as a foot soldier, Darrand was shipped off to some forsaken dustbowl of a planet, so small it was not even worthy of a name, just XJ-75938. Thrown into the thick of things, Darrand found purpose and simplicity in his life. Weeks upon weeks at the front, dug in to emplacements that ran for miles. He fought and fought and fought, never turning down an assignment. Many said he was possessed of a death wish, others said that he was bad luck, and so he was passed from unit to unit. But those who knew the truth, the ones who fought beside him could see that there was something else pushing him ever forward. A drive to protect the soldier next to him, a drive to protect those back home. A need to return to them alive and well.
It was the times away from the front, when the blaster's were cold, that were hardest for Darrand. Oh sure, it was nice to be able to sit back and have a cigarra and watch vids, open the care packages from his friends back home. New socks and some holos, some junk food from his parents. He forced himself to find things to keep busy, but aside from training and the occasional invite to play some shockball, when an additional player was needed to even up teams. His drive and earnest nature was found to be alienating by the other foot soldiers, so he kept to himself. This was not unnoticed, though. And so, he was sent to the Imperial Assault Corps. More than the IDF, the IAC was a place Darrand could be happy, a place where he could turn that energy into productivity, where that energy saw him hurtling himself forward backed by cheers of the others in his squad. Fighting here made sense to him, the people made sense to him, and so he distinguished himself even more, coming to lead a squad of the craziest karking bastards he had ever seen. And he loved it.
Years in the Assault Corps passed, Darrand and his squad sent off to various fronts, fighting, dying, doing what had to be done to keep the people back home safe. But good operators are always needed. Other jobs, delicate jobs, that required the self-reliance, motivation, and tactical mindset the others in his squad lacked. So he was pulled from his command, "seconded" to the ISA. And so Darrand evolved some more, moving from a leader of men, from a crazy karking bastard to a hunter, a tracker, a man who could get jobs done, turn off those emotions in the name of peace and security. He was trained in aerial insertions, learned how to spot (sniping was never his main skill), trained in basic slicing, taught to fly a starship (poorly, but well enough to get from point A to point B without killing everyone inside), and then he was let loose, set on the world, pending his next operation.
It was two months later that the call came. Two months of training, drilling, and keeping busy. Two months of what he assumed it was like to work in some admin job back home. But that night, the word came down. Sith Intel had a lead on some new Republic General who wanted to defect. It was supposed to be a simple op, take out some spice head pirates, dump the bodies, launch a raid on the General's convoy and secret him away, then slice the ship, send it into a sun and get the kark out of there. But when Jedi get involved, even a padawan, things get messy. People get dead. Good operators died that day, but the job got done, and, well, the Jedi had one less padawan afterwards.
Through the years, the Ops continued, friends died, enemies died, thankfully more of the latter than the former. But through it all, Darrand was the quiet and steady bedrock of a team, and now, well, now he leads them, working with Sith Intel and the ISB to get jobs done.
SKILLS
Preferred Gear
ARMOR: Imperial Assault Corps Armor
RIFLE: E-11D Blaster Rifle
SIDE ARM DA-34 Blaster Pistol
BLADEDarrand is a highly skilled operator and has received substantial training in the below fields due to his ten years of military experience.
- Marksmanship - While Darrand is by no means neat sniper levels of skill, he can certainly hit his target more often than not while in a wide range of combat situations, such as while running, riding in a moving vehicle, in low light, at up to 100 meters, or in dense terrain.
- Close Quarters Combat - Darrand is skilled with standard hand to hand weaponry up as large as knives, but is not capable with swords or more obscure equipment. He is trained in standard Imperial martial arts at a level that he can successfully neutralize most military opponents, but would likely fail to defeat anyone who has invested significant training into martial arts.
- Demolitions - Darrand is trained in the deployment of thrown explosives, breaching charges, landmines, and anti-personnel mines. He can also use anti-vehicle weapons competently, but is not an expert. He is capable of destroying infrastructure with planted explosives as it is necessary for his job, but he certainly is not capable of disarming traps or bombs.
- Piloting - Darrand is trained in basic ground vehicle piloting and can drive most ground vehicles as well as fly basic aerial or speeder vehicles. He is not a capable starship pilot, having been trained just enough that he could get one off the ground and fly it to another location. He certainly would not be able to land it, nor would he know how to plot hyperspace routes.
- Stealth - Darrand is trained in stealth operations, understanding how to move quietly, minimize his profile, blend into his environment, and travel undetected in all terrains, including Urban.
- Espionage - Darrand is trained in basic espionage techniques for more careful and extended operations, he is able to make dead drops, lose most average tails, tail a suspect (such that someone of average skill has about a 50% chance of noticing him), detect bugs, craft disguises, and other basic skills. He has no talent for anything above basic code making and codebreaking, and certainly is not capable of outmaneuvering any skilled or dedicated intelligence agent.
- Slicing - Darrand is capable of using computers on a fundamental user levels, and has been trained to use computer spikes and other pre-written programs to extract data. He can basically do anything plug-and-play, but if possible is more likely to just rip out the computer and bring it back for the experts.
- Security Operations - Darrand knows and understands basic security principles, especially operational security, but could not make knowledgeable inferences about another organization's security. He knows enough to direct a team, but will defer to the experts within that team for guidance.
- Leadership - Darrand is an experienced leader with the trust of his operators, he is able to command line troops and operators, but higher levels of command are not in his future.
- Tactics - Darrand has a solid grasp of small unit tactics both from his time in the IAC and as an Operator. He is not capable o strategic level decisions and has no experience in them. He can, and will, get his men out of trouble, though, and can plan an operation on the ground.
- Medicine - Darrand can apply basic battlefield medicine and first aid, beyond that he is out of his element.
On the whole, Darrand is slightly above average in most skills, and physically would be considered to have a slightly above average strength, dexterity, willpower and stamina for a human, while remaining average in terms of book smarts and charisma. He excels at nothing, except maybe marksmanship, but in exchange is trained in a wide variety of skills.
