I'm just gonna say that my family's katanas aren't heavy for me and I'm a woman of barely five feet two inches. They have a nice weight, not an overbearing one.
How long are they, roughly?

Katanas are light because they cut with the extremely sharp edge, not the weight that a broadsword utilizes.

Katanas are, I believe, nearly five pounds. I gotta say, I am personally impressed that you can wield one (assuming it is a standard length of 44 inches long, with a 28 inch blade) without trouble.

EDIT: Correction, length is actually probably closer to 28 inches, not 22.

I wouldn't want a sword for myself. Too heavy and in a modern setting you wouldn't have enough space to swing it. I'd take a machete any day of the week.

...but if I absolutely had to have a sword, I'd take a Zorro sword like the one Xeno talked about earlier.

Is that what you call them these days?:CAbove:

I may buy a sword if i wish, wither a katana, or a chinese Dadao.

Same here matey, and I just had to be 16. It might have been younger but oh well.

And still throwing out there, in general, swords really arent that hard to wield. Unless you are throwing around a ridiculous sword like a claymore or a flamberge(aka two handed crazy shit). They are pretty managable.

I am really not that good at estimating, therefore my reply has been delayed until now. I have measured one of the swords, it is from the WWII era, and the length of the actual blade, not following the curve (which would add length) it is almost exactly 25 inches long. The total length of the sword is almost exactly 35 inches.

And this is not the short swords.

Exactly.

I cannot account for the other swords in my family's posession, which are much older, since they are very far away from me, my tape measure, and my scale. But with the sheath it weighs almost exactly 3 lbs. Without the sheath, the sword weighs almost 2.5 lbs.

Also, I wouldn't say I could 'wield' it since I am not formally trained.

It feels great to hold though. :)

Plus we all know chicks holding katanas suddenly become sexy with no logical explanation.

I think they refer to it as the Bride effect. >.>

I also look good with a couple Walther P22's, or a school girl uniform, or a Colt 45.

Having the Walther P22's, the school girl uniform AND the Colt 45... Now that would look really good.

Of course. 22's on thighs, dual wielding katana and 45 while in uniform. Short skirts for the win. They're great for showing things off. The 22's I mean.

Since guns basicly kicked swords out from the world does anyone really make them anymore? I mean not like a decoration sword you hang from your mantle but I mean a real badass sword that cuts limbs off.

try BUDK magazine, they have swords, armor, sheilds, and axes. Plus alot more stuff.

I know - almost like it's a law of physics.
