The Void Serpents
What are the Void Serpents?
The Void Serpents are collection of thieves, rebels and barbarians who have come together in order to form a more potent force in the Outer Rim. Though they have many different reasons for doing what they do, they all work together as best they can, even if intertribal rivalries are bound to form.
The Void Serpents are raiders and pirates, taking what they need from others too weak to defend against them.
The Void Serpents have made their headquarters on Yahmsborg, a city on a frozen moon that had been abandoned quite some time ago.
The Code
1. Respect your fellow Serpent’s body and property.
2. No fighting within the boundaries of Yahmsborg.
3. No Serpent shall kill another in cold blood.
4. Pay your dues.
5. Don’t anger the Imperatrix.
Organization
The Void Serpents are a federation of three tribes, united under a single monarch, the Imperatrix Apophe KeYahm. Officially, the Yahm are the main tribe as the founders, however the other two are afforded relatively equal status amongst the Void Serpents so long as they continue to work competently. Each tribe has its own specializations, some of which are more broad than others.2. No fighting within the boundaries of Yahmsborg.
3. No Serpent shall kill another in cold blood.
4. Pay your dues.
5. Don’t anger the Imperatrix.

The Yahm
For generations, the Yahm Tribe travelled the Galaxy among a single capital ship, the Fang. However, one chief of the tribe had ambitions greater than just wandering as a nomad forever. His name was Koatel KeYahm, and he wanted to unite the Outer Rim under his rule. To that end, he consolidated power amongst his people, using his freakishly large and violent daughter Apophe as an enforcer. Dissenters were cowed into compliance or purged. Yet, Koatel knew the Yahm did not have the numbers to truly be a force. For that, he had other plans.
Koatel launched a raid upon a local prison station, and with some effort, managed to liberate the prisoners. Rather than accept them into the Yahm, he had the prisoners be reborn as a new tribe under his command, the Unchained, and encouraged them to abandon their old rivalries and loyalties and embrace him. Unfortunately, this was the start of his undoing. Koatel was many things, but compassionate was not one of them. When he found many of the new tribe were not combatants, he had the Yahm bully and abuse them in the hopes of hardening them up. This worked for some, but also had the unfortunate side-effect of building resentment amongst the Unchained.
Things finally came to a head when Koatel had devolved into pressing the Unchained into labour, helping him restore the city of Yahmsborg to work as his new capital. When the workers suddenly stopped, refusing to work, he set his daughter Apophe upon them. Except, she refused to kill the workers pointlessly. Koatel did not take this well, and struck his daughter. She responded by pulling him apart. The Unchained, grateful for her support, helped her advance quickly in the succession despite the fact that she had several older brothers and sisters.
The Yahm are the most savage of the Void Serpents, embracing the path of war and operating as berserkers for the Alliance. They embrace cybernetic enhancement, and prefer melee combat over the less refined ranged combat. They delight in terrifying their enemies, producing a characteristic “yell” that drones and causes anxiety in their foes. They also don strange and disturbing garb, and play loud, dissonant music to help spread the terror.
The bulk of the Yahm have in fact always been part of the Yahm through blood. Their fathers and fathers before them were fully-fledged members of the tribe, and as such display certain traits. They’re universally tall, with even women typically standing around 2m tall, and tend to be well-muscled and fair-skinned. They’re human. However, recently, the Yahm have taken to inducting new members into their ranks, although becoming a member of the tribe is not easy. One has to earn the respect of the Yahm before they can join them, and that usually means getting the Imperatrix’s blessing through feat of arms.
The Yahm also make use of Force-sensitives as part of their religion, cultivating Force witches who serve as oracles, doctors and priests to the tribe. They are held to be sacred, and are treasured. Many of these witches actually enter combat themselves, wielding their terrible power against the enemies of the Yahm.
The Unchained
The Unchained were the first tribe to join the Yahm after their liberation from their prison, and have been fairly grateful ever since. They are also some of the strongest supporters of Apophe’s rule, favouring her for her rebellion against her father Koatel and her willingness to allow them equal status with the Yahm. They are an incredibly active force within the court of the Void Serpents, jockeying for political favour.
Despite Koatel’s wishes, the Unchained fill a fairly flexible role within the Void Serpents. Though many of them are indeed soldiers, many of the Unchained instead pursue other avenues over combat. A strong element of the Unchained are their pilots, who were often smugglers and hotshots prior to their joining the Void Serpents. Others maintain contacts with the underworld of the central Galaxy, using their contacts to bring extra money into the coffers of the Void Serpents. Even still, there are others who bring smaller but no less valuable talents like distillery or engineering. They are the Jack of All Trades, and the Imperatrix knows their value. So do they.
Amazingly, despite their disparate backgrounds, the old rivalries that existed in their prison have eroded away into nothing. When they were prisoners, many of the Unchained belonged to competing gangs that loathed one another to the point of murdering each other. Now, the Unchained make sure to look after each other, largely due to the realization that divided they are liable to become punching bags for the other two tribes. These leads to a strong, family like bond among the Unchained. Unless you’re the Imperatrix, messing with one of them means angering all of them.
The Unchained are probably the easiest tribe to join for newcomers, as the Unchained themselves are made up of general outsiders and misfits and thus don’t have the same clannish, “out-group in-group” mentality as the other tribes. Usually, all one has to do to join the Unchained is make friends with someone in the tribe and not do anything to piss off the rest of the tribesmen.

The Free
The Free are the second tribe to join with the Void Serpents, originating from a collective mass of rebels, malcontents and paranoiacs who saw the rise of the Republic as a threat against their way of life and a means to control the complacent masses while further taking away rights from people who deserved it. The Free are soldiers, philosophers and lunatics.
The way the Free see it, modern society is for the dogs. Dependence on technology and democracy have made people weak, and now the strongest members of society are forced to cow-tow to people who in any just world would be long dead. Their origins trace back to a mad genius named Kac-Shin who wrote a manifesto called The Birth of the Republic and the Death of the Man which decried the modern state of affairs and outlined an idea for a new society ruled by the most capable that wouldn’t be held back by the weak. Kac-Shin died in a fire-fight with Republic officials after a terror campaign, but his ideas lived on. The Free started as a band of disaffected military men organized themselves into a society that worshipped strength and detested weakness, and held war to be the utmost expression of strength. Over time, they accumulated other like-minded people, and began moving into primitivist communes that tried to distance themselves from society. Unfortunately, their bloody-mindedness soon lead to clashes with any sort of government force that happened to be where they were, and thus they moved around often, picking up more of those unhappy with the current state of Galactic politics and indoctrinating them.
The Free came to the Void Serpents as a last resort. They sought to subjugate them at first, hoping to form their own little domain outside of Republic grasp. To their surprise, the Yahm and the Unchained managed to defeat them with a mix of savage strength and guile. However, rather than butcher them, the Imperatrix offered the Free a chance to join the Void Serpents. The Free accepted.
The Free are a truly militarized society. Every member, whether young or old, male or female is expected to know how to fight and how to support themselves. As soon as they can walk, the children of the Free are taught how to shoot a blaster, and those born malformed are promptly disposed of without a second thought. The Free also emphasize physical perfection, finding obesity to be a mark of worthlessness and encouraging members to be as active as possible. They generally avoid any form of cybernetics unless one has genuinely lost their limbs.
The Free have cultivated something of a rivalry with the Unchained, whom they see as the weak link in the Void Serpents. They respect the Yahm and their savagery, but the Unchained have too many non-combatants amongst their ranks and this clashes with the Free’s view of how society should function. They try to curry favour with the Imperatrix, but so far they’ve had little luck in getting her to turn on the Unchained.
