A wide range of ideas here, some which seem to have been dropped entirely, whilst others seem to have been carried on and are now being used as plot points for the canon going ahead.

Right? The Disney acquisition wiped them from the canon only to be made canon by the beloved Clone Wars show. Would have been an awful blow unless they brought Thrawn in to curbstomp them in the first and only episode they appeared in, which ended with the Vong wiped off the face of existence.
