Coruscant. Walking out into a new old world.

#Day 1.
I turned sixteen today, I got a whole blanket to myself and gave it to my sister who looks pale, it stunk a bit because Fluffy used to sit on but now he lives in an old water barrel. We’ve been down here for longer than I can remember in this metal box, our old freighter. Forty of us crammed into this small space, with a cargo hold full of water and boring food cubes. The Jedi says the nexus thingy protects us, my father says that’s all a lot of nonsense. He says the gangs and dangerous creatures of the lower levels kill the killers too, but their battles have been going quiet, running down, just like our food.

Uncle says anything taking off or landing was ripped out of the sky, just like we were, but here something funny keeps them away, or makes finding us hard. You wouldn’t believe who is with us, my girlfriend’s family and mine, the freighter crew, some stowaways, security with doctors that came to our crash site and we took in. Even the trader that sold our food, and my father's old boss, a weird bunch’a of freaks if you ask me. Two guys never woke up from the crash, old doc says there in a deep sleep and might never wake up, kinda lucky if you ask me, going to sleep and not having to sit here all day.

Not today though, today the door came down, we are low on food. The security went out first, and said it’ll be good to stretch their legs. You couldn’t hold us back either, we all wanted to feel what it was like to walk without going around the same halls over and over. Outside it was really dark, not like inside the freighter, but it was weird, there were no walls or ceilings out here to lean against or look at. I started to feel dizzy when I looked up.

We found some maintenance tunnels or something, the Jedi said they went in so many directions that they’ll be hard for the defilers to catch us. That’s what we call the creatures that cause the screams outside. The ship's engineer reckons that the power generators are so loud with such a powerful field, that between them and the nexus we should get some cover there, but we might get ill if we stay too close. Some of the older guys think the old holo-arcade is really really distracting with everything turned on but also can be silent, I think that's a bit dumb. Anything that can be turned on to add to the Nexus cover or is confusing to navigate the Jedi says we should look for, smoke and mirrors he says. He sounds kinda of smart, ah I dunno, we'll see I guess. I am excited but also scared.

Negative Event

A few of us couldn’t walk well, we got really bad headaches and started falling over. Some started to feel ill and it got bad here. I feel faint too, something about the air down here, and being in a box for so long, our balance is off. One of my aunts slipped and hurt herself real bad, broke her hip the doc says, we’ve got to take it really slow and carefully get used to being outside again. We didn’t find any food, and we’ve used up some medical supplies for cuts and bruises from just walking around. It wasn’t a good birthday, a lot of people felt ill and some were crying to be free they said, but I got outside, I just wish my headache would stop. We heard strange noises and we decided to close the door again for another day. Frell it. #Diary End

#Day 2. Yesterday was bad but we don’t want to give up. People are grumbling, my Aunt’s in a lot of pain with her hips. We can’t sit here any longer. The Jedi said he’d scout off alone for supplies to minimize the risk, the freighter captain said he was arrogant but I think he’s cool. Jal is risking himself for us, and that takes guts.

When he went out I snuck out too, I figured it was the least I could do to help. The places down here are dark, dusty, and damp. I feel cold and things are so quiet, it's weird to hear the echoes and eerie noises in the black. I’m pretty sure the walkways down here smell too but sis says we don’t smell much after living with forty people who barely get to wash.

Through the maintenance tunnels that connect just about everything I crawled after the Jedi. Trying to be quiet, standing up is hard, I can’t explain it, moving around in the open, my muscles don’t want to do it and I ache.

Pretty dumb to sneak after a Jedi though. #Diary End

Found a new safe spot

“Are you planning to follow me all day?” Jal Obenn turned around with a smile, the Jedi’s braided beard was brushed every day, and those blue eyes were as gentle and assuring as they’d ever been. Kas never really looked at him before in this light, on the ship he just had some good stories and could make fancy light, sometimes Kas had seen him with his hands on the hull of the ship and asked him what he was doing, but he’d never say. Uncle would say Jedi Magic, and wave his hands, but eh dunno sounded like a story.

“If you're coming young one, stay close.” Young one, Kas was sixteen thank you very much, he just glared and sighed.

The pair crawled through rubbish, and trash, all the wonders of the lower levels, there was an awkward pause, The teenager almost saw something he was not supposed to, but Jal turned Kas from it before he got a look. The body was covered and a few words were said about the force before the pair moved on.

The two of them came to the noisiest place Kas had ever heard, there were so many fans blowing this way and that. The air was way nicer than above, it might be good for his grandmother's cough. “This is good,” the Jedi nodded, Kas could hardly hear him. "Good?" There were tunnels right and left all with air vents and fresh air being pumped around. It was another maze. “They can’t smell us here and they can’t hear us here, close enough to the nexus to block the force connection, this will be very good.” Jal mused.

”What did you say?” He covered his ears, no way they could sleep down here. Jal just ruffled his hair, which was already disheveled enough. Then he just led Kas back to the ship, and when they got there told everyone the good news.

#Day 2 Final.
It was almost decided the group was going to start splitting up into these safe zones, or at least moving around more to get people used to walking, there was disagreement and most people were staying where they knew, but a few were brave enough now to begin looking for more supplies, which are still running lower. Very cool there are more places to walk now, these maintenance tunnels can lead just about anywhere, as long as they are safe we are lucky.

#Day 3. My friends were pretty psyched about the vents, we’ve been exploring them, playing around, and seeing what we could find. Uncle Sazen says he’s not letting us out of his sight, but most of the time he’s sitting up resting in the nice air. Not seen any defilers, some of the adults say they’ve left this area. I don't believe them. I still hear really strange things some nights, and our nurse swears she heard a scream last night. Inside our freighter it used to stop a lot of the sounds, out here it's eerie and chilling, I feel like something is watching us. Maybe playing in the vents was a bad idea. Wait. #End Diary

Negative Encounter

An eerie wailing crept into the mind, and prickly chills crawled up his spine “That’s our cue to head back younglings.” The group was heading out anyway but security was not taking any chances, Uncle Sazen, some of the kids, a security guard, my father’s old boss, and the nurse. It left the adults free to scavenge further afield. The younglings had so much energy that was pent up in the freighter, it had many of them anxious and jittery, but out here they could let it go. Kas had to say it was so good to be able to walk free again, even if these fans were giving him another headache.

”Looks like a shortcut,” Sqirl Krot snorted and started walking off in another direction, he was a grumpy old Quarren at the best of times, and one reason Kas’s family were to be moved offworld, was to get away from his employment. At least his Grandpa said so, he also said something else about him but his mum always covered Kas’s ears at that last part.

”Let’s stick to the routes we know,”
the security reminded him. It was a bridge but it looked like had taken some damage, and there were unpredictable teenagers about, “Not a good idea to….” The eerie wailing swept like a wave, followed by a scream.

”Where’s Cira?” One of the kids panicked, and everyone looked around, the tension and fear he could feel law teeth biting into him. “Get the rest of them back now!” The security guard called to the nurse, who huddled everyone together and made their way back to the ship.

#Day 3 Final.
I never got to see what happened to Cira, they got her back but there are burn marks on her hands, she hasn’t said anything and she just looks up. She’s sweating and I can’t get her to hear me. Why won't she say anything? Did I do something wrong?

#Day 4. I’ve been sitting with Cira, I was the one that wanted to go, that really wanted to get out, and now she’s here trembling and won’t even move her eyes. The doctor says it's Cantan or Catata, something about being withdrawn from reality, the shock, fear, and pain were so bad. Her burns are wrapped up but they made her hands… I don’t want to think about it. Five of us are going out to look for advanced medical supplies to help her, I hope we find some, they want me to stay here but nobody is stopping me from leaving. I am so angry with myself, I was stupid, I wanted to be a kid again, and look what happened. That time is over. #Diary End

Find Lots of Supplies

Five of them checked their gear and headed out. The young security guard was an Echani, which explained why she didn’t speak much, Taela they called her but she never wanted to confirm it. Kas felt safe around her though, like the Jedi she had the look of someone calm under pressure, she led the way. After yesterday's foolishness, Jal had insisted he go on every outing outside the freighter, so the Jedi was there with them. There was an Ithorian with them too, he was the freighter's navigator and although not much good in a fight, he’d been spending his time mapping the best routes through the maintenance tunnels, alongside Kas was his father Nusann who had insisted that if his boy was going he was coming too after yesterday. His dad firmly had his hand near Kas’s shoulder for reassurance.

After yesterday's close call they were extra careful over this long distance and unfamiliar ground. The Echani was taking twice as long to move from room to room, checking corners and acting very professional given the condition they were in here. The Jedi kept his senses out sharp, homing in on what they wanted. They came across what looked like a battle site, there were barricades, blast marks, a body or two which his father kept from his sight, and dripping vicious fluid clinging to the walls.

”Old gang turf,” Nusann pointed at the symbols on the wall, “probably gave those bastards hell coming through here.”

”Standing to fight is foolish.” The female Echani said bluntly, “even with a hundred blasters.”

”Sometimes it's all that’s left.” Nusann said with a sigh.

The Jedi was too busy talking with the Ithorian about something in private, reading a datapad “this way.” More scorched tunnels, eerie creaking metal, and either no light or dim flashing cables ripped out above sparking their remaining power away. Kas felt his father’s hand on his shoulder.

They walked right into a formal medical depot, just like the plans said, more a gang pharmaceutical lab now, but sith abominations don’t need medical supplies or underworld spice shots, so some materials were still there. “This will suffice,” the Echani answered with her usual emotionless tone, and the long bellowing of the Ithorian indicated he was elated. Kas was staring at the blood on the walls, and the blaster shots, they’d ripped right through this gang, he could see where the doors buckled picturing the final moments as they were overrun.

”We got what we came for son, let’s get these back to Cira okay?” Nusann said with a warm smile.

”Not tonight, it’s a long distance in the pitch black, we’ll camp here and head back in the morning.” The Jedi stated, the Echani was about to argue they should move at night, but saw his resolve and nodded. “Very well.”

#Day 4 Final.
We got here. It was a full-day walk to a drug lab, my dad kept saying to call it a doctor’s place but it was all painted in gang signs, banners, and blood. Jal and the Ithorian have been laying the bodies to rest, or what’s left of them. I’ve tried not to look, Dad keeps saying I should spare myself that as long as I can. It’s a real score though, jackpot, if we can get all these back to the others. Another two days supplies at least for all forty of us. The others are happy, we'll help Cira I'm sure we will.

#Day 5. We are headed back in high spirits, Dad is laughing and joking, and things are looking up. We’ve bagged up all the bandages and chemicals we could need. Then we got that call, one I was dreading hearing, and could do nothing about. #Diary End

Survivor Dies

“Search team this is home freighter come in. I know we are not supposed to broadcast but we’ve got trouble here, big trouble. Force knows how they found us but one is all over the freighter, we’ve got a team cut off.”

”Cut off? You were supposed to wait for me to get back!” For the first time Kas saw the Jedi lose his cool, if people would only follow the plan, things like this wouldn’t happen. He didn’t say the words but everyone was thinking them.

”The Quarren bantha-brain, our freighter captain, and a few of his crew decided they knew better, Merlarr has gone out to try to bail them out but… hurry please.”

Kas's group ran, all caution to the wind gone, their group left behind things they could have carried, risking their own lives to save some arrogant shutta’s who just had to know better. Even with their speed, they were never going to make it in time. Its amazing that he felt scared coming through these tunnels and now they all barrelled down them at a sprint.

Meanwhile, Merrlar did what any veteran hard-ass ex-military s.o.b does. He got that abomination by the tail and shot at it to get its attention, then ran like hell. The veteran security guard saved every sorry loser who thought they knew better than the professionals, but he was never going to make it out himself.

Getting closer their group could hear shouting, gunfire, and a body being thrown about painfully against the walls, metal buckling from the fight. A brave security officer dying for a completely unnecessary reason.

”Come on you ugly mother frakking sith spit! That all you got!” Firing his blaster till the last, till the world turned black, his grenade sent him out in a blaze of glory. Shockwaves reverberated around the tunnel, collapsing it on both abomination and man. Their entire section of the maintenance tunnels rocked back and forth. Kas fell to the floor, he couldn’t believe what was going on, nor could anyone else.

They’d all just realized they were not invincible, the danger was very real, and they’d just lost one of their few protectors that they’d never replace.

#Day 5 Final.
We lost our first survivor tonight. Never had much chance to get to know him, but he was one the bravest men on the freighter. I could have learned so much, we needed his protection so much here. We are holding a funeral for him tomorrow, we don’t have a body but I hope he blew that thing to hell or buried it. We have to do better than this, every other day something happens. We’ll remember you Merlarr Kamnok, I promise I will if I get out of here, and your Correllian bravery. I can’t write how angry I and some of the others are, how stupid all this was, again. The elders have taken the thief out of the brig and thrown the captain and the Quarren in it, screw them both.

#Day 6.
We got together for the Funeral today. Except for the two we’ve locked in the Brig. I was even chatting to the thief, he’s okay, a bit kind of hard to read but seems happy to be he's out and was chatty. The captain is complaining that he’s locked in his own brig but nobody has any sympathy. Hope they rot.

We don’t have much to burn or use for a service, the doctor said he’d try a few words. Some of the others are working on fortifying our areas to try to keep them more secure. If those things are getting in, maybe we can barricade some of the exits, it didn’t work for the local gang, but I don’t know, we have to try something. #End Diary

Laying the dead to rest with the rest.

”We gather here to pay tribute to a hero, one of the best of us. Merlarr Kamnok. A veteran and a protector. He gave his life to save those he had no relation to. He showed us we have to be a family here, we cannot act alone. We all wish he was here with us now, to help us through this. Wherever you are Merlarr, we’ll carry your memory, and we are lesser without you.” The doctor bowed his head and they lit a small scrap of paper to burn in a cup. Which was about all they had to spare.

It was a sweet solemn service, and as the group started to separate, some to work on the barricades, and others to sit in silence. Of course, the universe didn’t give them a break. There was an ear-wrenching grinding of metal from the direction of the air vents, the Abomination was not dead. It had pulled itself and the rubble with it through the ventilation systems, breaking apart fans and twisting metal. Worse it wasn’t alone, more were pouring in the direction of the vents.

”THEIR IN THE VENTS. OH GODS HELP US!” There was sheer panic. Sending the group from silent remembrance to people running in different directions, some toward the vents, some toward the freighter.

Wild Blaster fire was going off, “Get out of there, don’t stand and fight, get out of there!” The freighter comms called out. “Get off the comms!” Another shouted. It was literal pandemonium. Kas’s mother ran up to him, and kissed his head, “Your sisters, oh Kas where are they?”

”Concentrate fire above the fans and seal it in!”
“I SAID GET OFF THE COMMS.”
”They’ve taken someone, I can’t see who it is, we're being overrun I can’t see this, I can’t watch…”

The wailing over the open channel was terrifying, he didn't know how many were injured, how many were dead. All Kas thought of was rounding up his family, so he ran straight for the vents, straight toward whatever was going on.

#Day 6 (Cont)

As Kas reached the overrun vents he saw one for the first time, it was gnashing and growling, writhing like some kind of nightmare, wrapped around an unconscious body and dragging the helpless Rodian with it. Kas didn’t have time to think else he would have been frozen in place, the shrieking madness was numbing to the senses, like his mind was being assaulted with something so far out of this world it dazed him. Others were firing, covering people placing explosives, but the creatures were only halted while they… consumed and defiled their victims. He threw up immediately and pushed off the wall to continue.

Kas saw most of his family as he passed, only his kid sister was missing, where was she? Force-frakker she was laying there prone and bleeding, he scooped her up, “k…kas?” He rested her close to his chest, cradled her and ran, “ssssh Fienn, we’ll be okay. Lie still, gotcha sis gotcha” Her breath was weak, “that man he was walking around for the first time today, he was smiling, and now.” Kas didn’t know what the frell she was saying, and it didn’t matter, as long as she was talking. “I know. I got you. Keep talking to me.”

The sounds of blasters and screams continued until explosives sealed the vents once and for all. The area collapsed completely, grinding metal, sealing the victims into their gruesome fate. There isn’t a good way to die, but from what he saw, today will haunt his dreams. For the first time the whole area lurched wildly as a level collapsed above, hope it crushed the bastards.

Result: Dead Survivor

#Day 6 Final
Three dead in two days, so many are injured or shaking in fear. The nurse gets a man out of his coma, and he dies that day. SurreaI. I don’t know what’s real, so much death, pain, and blood. Those things are in my head, behind my eyes. I can’t today, I’m sorry.

We decided not to do a funeral outside, some think it attracts the defilers. I don’t know what to think, or write today, I can’t process the last two days or what happened. I just keep hearing the screams and seeing it in my mind. #Diary End

Aftermath of Absolute Chaos

Kas woke up in a cold sweat. The freighter was a mess with makeshift stretchers everywhere, the doctor and nurse were overworked. The nurse looked paler than Cira, she’d just got her coma patient vertical and now he was among the dead. There were many strange things about the last two days, but nothing that shocked the crew more than that, talk about bad timing.

”Hey Fienn, how are you?” Kas crouched by his sister.

”I’m o..okay, th… thanks Kas.” She looked weak, faint.

He bopped her nose and they smiled. Her leg looked pretty bad too, doc had dressed it but he couldn’t tell if it was infected or if there was something he didn’t know medically about the creatures. Meanwhile, anxiety and panic attacks had picked up among the civilians, especially his girlfriend's grandmother. Kas looked around, his understanding of a bad day had deepened greatly, and this was unreal. The groaning and moaning of the injured, the dwindling supplies, and the threats just outside the freighters lurking around. His headache was starting again, and his father looked about as concerned or pensive as he was.

In the middle of it all was Jal, a beacon. The Jedi returned and stood in the center of the freighter, nothing seemed to phase him, he’d been out looking twice as hard for supplies and aid. “Good news. I’ve found a way into the old temple. We sent a communication to orbit and we are hoping someone sends aid.” Despite spending time going around every injured crewmember, Jal still found time to explore the depths of this hell at night. “It's not fancy there but it's comfortable, we have beds for the injured, it's not far, and the showers still work.”

”Wait you’ve sent a communication to orbit? Won’t that bring more problems here?” The Freighter’s pilot frowned.

”With the explosions yesterday I think that is inevitable. You all took down most of a level for a kilometer.” Jal shrugged, clearly believing the risk was worth it.

”I just heard showers.” Kas’s aunt Baorly stood up and immediately walked out, there was some dark laughter despite the grim nature of it all, everyone here badly needed showers.

Showers. Not recycled water from an old overused tank. It's so weird to be washing in a temple, do we pray here? It's dusty but we’ve been cleaning it up. Never used a sonic shower, I thought I was going to get deafened, but it was not like that. Nyx wants to hang out, we're kinda together but there was only one room in the freighter for couples to hang, and that was booked for like a month in advance. Why the hell am I writing this here for frells sake? Oh shoot she’s here, wish me luck diary. #Diary End

Temple Dates?

Everyone was getting a well-deserved wash and most of the patients with injuries had a comfortable bed to sleep in at the Old Jedi Temple. The two locations did separate the crew, but they were both safer than the tunnels, or the frakking death-hole vents. Jal said those vents would be safe, Kas was wondering if the Jedi knew what he was saying now.

Kas had even brushed his hair, kind of, if brushing meant hacking at it with his comb for an hour to get the straggles out. There were no good barbers in the abomination wonderland. The droid had offered to trim his hair but he didn’t trust it, less so since its master had been killed, that thing was even more eerily silent these days.

Nyx smiled up at him and kissed his cheek, “Miss me?”

He blushed and nodded, “yeah,” putting his arm around her and giving her a light squeeze.

”No couples room tho.” She blinked.

”Yeah but we can walk, there’s like halls and old unused rooms.” Kas looked around.

”Walk? Hmm, I guess.” They both agreed walking was weird, they’d never done that together before in freighter-life, just around the hallways to keep the legs working. If you didn’t move much people got cramps, pains in their feet, fat, or just couldn’t move much from sitting too long, a lot of the older folks had that problem now, their legs struggled to work right.

Arm around her and her head on his shoulder. Such a simple thing brought them all the joy in the world, a new place, and quiet time together. Sometimes life was really good, even for survivors, sometimes all that Huttmash and junk behind you just didn’t matter. They had each other, and they were alive.

That was enough.

Result: Positive Event

#Day 9 @Interdictor
Things go from terror to elation. We’ve had two great days, and now a stranger, a frakking hero sends a supply drop-down! I so want to give them a high five. A few of us are headed out to pick it up. I can’t believe it someone heard the message and risked themselves to help us. Everyone is talking about it, it's like a divine gift whatever you believe in. There is excitement, elation, and hope. We’ve only got two guards now so the Jedi is going, the ship’s navigator, Nyx's father, the nurse, me, my uncle, and the ship’s stowaway thief. He’s from Naboo, Guthim Vann, only a bit older than me, but I still kinda don’t trust him, even if he’s friendly. #Diary End

A Hero’s gift from the black.

“You sure you know how to use that?” Guthim looked at my uncle Ceorsenn. This uncle never spoke much, honestly, he scared Kas, someone said he used to be a bounty hunter and I can believe it. He just gave Guthim this look that could cut him in half, checking the weapon out like an old hand. The group had so few blasters or power cells, that they were crossing their fingers and hoping beyond hope they'd find some.

The group was headed to something the ship’s navigator had picked out as an old elevator that retrieved cargo from the upper levels and sent it down. Which means they could stay close to the old temple nexus still. Kas grabbed a jagged bit of metal, the area around here was twisted, like it had seen a lot of fighting.

When the group got to the docking elevator, they realized other survivors had been here, some of the barricades were as solid as they come, excessively thick metal, it must have been set up by droids or vehicles. “We seal this, nothing's getting in here,” Guthim decided. “Something did.” Ceorsenn corrected. They must have been holding this spot, getting supplies from the elevator or trying to get people out. “It's an acceptable spot to reinforce, and the elevator allows quick passage to other levels,” our Jedi friend decided.

The small group waited for the right moment. They couldn’t risk leaving the nexus for more than a minute or two. As they took the elevator upward everyone was tense, perhaps the Jedi most of all, he wouldn’t say anything but Kas saw it on his face the deep concentration. Could he sense them?

When they got to 500th level, they did not walk or move slowly, they ran to the supplies, cutting the parachute strands, “keep that as a blanket.” The thief with them saw the value in anything, he was right.

“Move fast.” The ex bounty hunter looked up, and Kas too was feeling a chill along his spine, they were coming, he could begin to hear the wailing and awful noises crawling at his skull.

Result: New Safe Spot - Reinforced Cargo Elevator + Cargo Drop!

#Day 9 (Cont)

As they were picking up the cargo, trying to gauge the weight right between those present. Blaster fire erupted from the 500th-level, landing pad. Explosions, and shouts. Not from their group, at least five survivors were running towards them, followed right behind by hunger, pain, and the all-consuming nothingness that ravaged this planet.

”Fast. Now.” Uncle Ceorsenn covered the group, while they picked up the boxes, the Jedi finding the strength to carry a huge load by himself, but there were enough people here, all heading toward the elevator with cargo carried between them.

”Wait! WAIT!” Cried the nearest of the runners, the black writhing mass behind them was terrifying, it engulfed one man ripping him to pieces, not even slowing down, how many were out here outside the Nexus? It was unending.

The entire cargo was put inside the elevator doors, plus blaster rifles, which several of them were extremely happy to see. Ahead it was a terrifyingly different story. The lady at the back of the group didn’t even get to scream as she was taken.

That left three.

”Shut the door, shut the damned door!” Nyx’s father moved to the controls, but the Jedi blocked him with a hand. “When it is time.” Jal would do it, only when he must. The first of the rooftop runners ran straight into the elevator, the fear in his eyes could only be understood by looking at the teeth, the tendrils, and the writhing black mass behind him.

”COME ONNNN.” The Zabrak screamed back at the other two, the female twi’lek throwing herself inside, but the third twi’lek… the Jedi pressed the button. The Zabrak wrestled with the Jedi, “please he’s almost in,” the female twi’lek begged, “he’s right there.”

”I’m sorry. There is no more time.” Such calm in the face of madness, if the Jedi hadn't been here, who knows what would have happened?

The lift started to descend and the man’s eyes went wide, he was banging on the elevator wall but not for long, the sounds were all too familiar now. A few covered their ears, but not Kas he listened with closed eyes, as the monsters took another life. One day he'd kill them all.

“You didn’t have to. He was. It was.” The female runner slumped over and curled up. There was silence on the descent, a bitter-sweet return with the supplies, two more survivors, a new safe spot, and a cargo drop! All in all, it was the best few days they'd had, by far, it just didn't feel like it right now.

Result: Two Survivors

#Diary 9 Final
I should be happy. I am, we’ll eat, drink, and remember those we’ve lost. We’ve got more guns and spare power cells. I won’t be sad today, we found two new survivors, we’ll help them, we’ll comfort them, and make their lives the best we can while we live. Thank you to the hero who sent the food and water supplies. You’ve saved a lot of lives. I just wish we could save them all. #Diary End

We’ve given the new survivors a bed in the freighter, they seemed happier there than in the temple, they like the metal walls and ceiling. The twi’lek girl is in shock but she’s okay, just crying a lot, a bit like my oldest sister. I just see her sitting there rocking back and forth. Things are going so well, but so many of us are just waiting for the next attack. Maybe it won’t happen, maybe we can make a life here, supply drops, scavenging, what other choice is there? We’ve been reinforcing our safe spots, and the temple nexus thing looks like a fortress now. There are layers of shanty metal walls in the way of the freighter. #Diary End

Survivors Reunited

Despite the constant threat the group was having a period of relief, they were eating well thanks to their angelic benefactor. Without them, they would have been starving. They even had new survivors here, more survivors from outside their group. All these things had people smiling, even laughing, morale was the highest it had ever been since the doors opened.

A lone female Zabrak walked towards the freighter. She had been banging on the metal barriers trying to get in. People were talking about these newcomers but this single survivor approaching them, where did she come from, who was she? Both the temple and the freighter were soon talking about it. She looked terrible but resolved, confident even.

It was the two newcomers that rushed out to greet her.

”Did anyone else make it?” The Male Zabrak asked her.

”Probably not. They came in through the ceiling, everywhere was locked down to cut us off from them.” Her partner just hugged her, and their twi’lek friend soon followed. The three of them found some solace in each other. Kas turned away to give them some privacy, his father put his hand on his shoulder, and they looked at each other as they walked away.

Many wondered how many friends the trio had lost, but all they said was many. For one reason or another certain pocket locations on the planet were harder for the creatures to find, maybe Nexus’s or other things confusing their senses. Kas looked at their Jedi friend as they walked, some very few were lucky enough to have guardians watching out for them. Who knows what their Jedi was doing every day to keep the beasts away?

Result: Found Survivor

#Diary 10 Final

It's nice to see another group together again. A mini family, we’re back to forty survivors again. I wonder how many others we can find that are clinging to life, hoping to be rescued. I hope we find them all, I don’t like to think that they are alone somewhere. It's bad enough in our group, with all these people around, but on your own, it must be horrible. My family had a get-together, my brothers, and my sisters just sat and told stories, and everyone was smiling. Nyx and I are going to curl up together, nothing weird, it's just good not to be alone.

Just when you think, that things were going to turn, when the newcomers had given up on their friends. Two more of them made it here. We’ve gone from high spirits around here to laughing, joking, and swapping stories. Entire families are sat together talking to each other. There are still tears and pain but here it's kinda beautiful to see families reunited, the Twi’lek girl has come around now she’s with her sister and mother. Really amazing, whole families arrived together, not just survivors. #Diary End

Building Something Better

”Another family made it. Can you believe it?” The ship’s engineer was there with his hands covered in frell knows what, always working. Kas never saw him, the guy was so busy working the Barricades, fixing up what little equipment they had. He was a Kel Dor, Izun Zor, or the kids affectionately called him Zort to his annoyance for the noise his breath mask made.

”Need another pair of hands on the northside inner wall.” Izun started walking, he wasn’t one to stand around idle long. Kas shrugged and started following, along with his older brother Kadeno. Kadeno was bigger than he was, and probably more useful heaving metal about.

”Ever worked an arc welder before?” Izun pushed his hands against the barricade.

Both boys looked at each other and shook their heads.

”Ah its simple, usually I’d give you goggles, but this is the last pair. Check your output speed, hold it to 90 degrees to the surface is ideal. Make sure you don’t look directly into the beam and keep your hands a distance away. Stop every so often and check how you are doing. A little but often, keep the progress steady and don’t bunch up on one area. ”

”We can’t look at the weld?” That did seem a problem for novices, the engineer sighed and handed over his goggles, “take good care of those, we won’t find another pair.” Under Zort's instruction, the brothers joked, laughed, and teased each other as they took turns. For another day they were brothers, not survivors.

Kas’s day was entirely working on the barricades and listening to the happy stories from behind him. They were carving out fortifications here, walls upon walls, reinforced ceilings above, some of these locations were becoming connected homes they could all explore in relative safety, despite the eerie noises and sense of dread lingering in the air. He didn’t feel that today.

Result: Found Two Survivors

#Diary 11 Final

I felt productive today, like I made a difference. Another great day. I hope every day is like today. Nyx wants another walk, I think I’m falling in love with her, my brother says I’m dumb but he says he's jealous too. I know he’s been looking at the new Twi’lek girls though, I saw it Diary, yep. Nyx is looking over and pinching my arm! See what I have to put up with!

We were relaxing today, almost letting our guard down, we’ve got a lot of people with weapons now patrolling making sure the walkways are safe. We’ve even decided to let the Quarren out of the brig, he says he knows where we can find some food as a trade, even some seeds. #Diary End

A Traitors Word

There was some disagreement among the group as to whether to let the captain or the Quarren out, after they got Merrlar killed, the Echani Security officer was really against it and she was making that known. ”You let them out and they get more killed.”

“Everyone makes mistakes.” Nyx’s old grandfather said from the back and their Jedi protected nodded. The Jedi had a quiet word with the female Echani guard, “if he does it again, I’m shooting him.”

After not much ceremony or love lost, several members of the group followed the prisoners through the tunnels, through the eerie silence and soft wailing to the Holo Arcade. The old attraction had become a spot for the children to at least pretend they were playing games. A few things didn’t require power, or make noise, so they would mock play games on them. Things to break up the boredom of the underground wasteland, it was tragic but it was what they had.

”Its just through here,” the Quarren said entering a small room.

The door shut behind him. Locked.

”Come on don’t play games now.” Some of the elders had come here just to keep the peace, to calm these young folk down, and one of the grandmothers got right to the door, “you open this door this instant, and stop your fooling around young man.”

ALL THE LIGHTS CAME ON, WITH ALL THE NOISE.

It felt like a hundred eyeballs came on the group at once. An elderly man grabbed the freighter captain, “this was your idea!” The captain pleaded that he had no idea, and he was stuck too, but there wasn’t much time to argue because the floor burst open.

A razor wire of cuts spun around at waist height. Everyone ran, but where could they run? The captain ran straight into the Echani who didn’t say anything, and shot him point blank, kicking him into the maw to slow it down. That bought them seconds but not much.

Nobody could say anything because they were getting cut, slashed at, and screaming. Always the screaming. Kas could hear it from the ship, he started to help get people inside and did what he usually did, ran toward it.

#Day 12 (Cont)

Expecting the worst, Kas was completely surprised when he saw the Jedi standing tall, light pouring into the surrounding environment, long enough for the Echani guard to shut down the noise. The light seemed to push back the creatures, till they were squealing like caged animals being tortured. There was no sympathy for the beasts being pushed back down the hole they came from. There was nothing left of the arcade but things went much better than they could have.

There were injuries, several of the elders were cut or burned, even his mother. Kas spent the rest of the day talking to them, trying to soothe them while the doctor used up their rapidly dwindling medical supplies.

Removing the danger wasn’t the end of the commotion, the freighter crew wanted the Echani guard locked up for shooting their captain, and everyone was talking about what the Quarren had done to them. A few wanted to go looking for him but there were injured to tend to and more barricades to put up. The thing that gnawed at Kas the most was the loss of the little fun the younglings had, pretend fun at the old arcade was something they’d miss, even if it was dumb play on a dead world.

The new survivors, the Zabrak couple, and Twi’lek family were discussing moving on. Who could blame them, there were loud arguments here, and now a traitor was at large. Some voices were saying they were stronger together and trying to calm everyone down, but others were hurt, and angry.

Kas got up on an old crate, with barely any light but a small burning scrap of paper he lit in a cup.

”You could go but it's no better out there. Here we help each other, I know today sucked, but it's not easier out there. It's better to be around people, most days.He didn’t have any compelling words, he just hoped they’d stick together, even through this betrayal. Nyx came up and hugged him. The Jedi gave more thoughtful words to the injured and the frightened, settling people down.

Families shook hands with the other families, but the arguments about killing the freighter captain weren’t going away, nor the Quarren scum's betrayal. They'd need a plan and they had a decision or two to make.

Result: Positive Event

#Day 12 Final

We’ve got a Quarren running around loose, a traitor that got mine and Nyx’s family hurt. I don’t feel angry, I’m feeling more numb. The Echani shooting the freighter captain seemed the right choice, even if his crew are now furious, especially the pilot. What’s wrong with me, is killing someone right? He wasn’t even armed, but I hated him. Maybe I just need to rest, I hope tomorrow is quieter again.

A trial. We are doing a trial of the Echani who shot the freighter captain. Pretty much everyone wants to find the Quarren traitor but nobody can agree on the Echani’s guilt. I hope it goes okay, everyone’s really tense and this is something new again, I don’t know what to expect. It's exciting but dad told me how serious it was, if she’s guilty what do we do?

#Diary End

Does the law apply in a lawless world?

Everyone but a few on guard gathered up in the old temple main hall, there were some steps up so people could see those speaking, and we’d got some basic lighting, enough that the outlines of everyone could be seen. We were split into families or groups, my family, Nyx’s family, the new survivors, the freighter crew, and everyone else, the oddballs as my brother says.

There were so many people speaking it was hard to keep track, one after the other they went.

”We all know what he did. That son of a bitch got Merlarr and he could have been working with a traitor to get the rest of us killed.”

”You don’t know that.”

”There is no way she knew he was part of it. She shot him out of revenge.”

”So what? What law is there down here? Look around, we are on our ass, it's us or them. ”

”We are not animals. We don’t just kill each other.”

“No, we don’t but we do protect each other, and sometimes that means making the hard choice.” Kas’s uncle said more in that line than he’d ever heard him speak all year.

The sides were clear, the freighter crew wanted her locked up, the families mostly wanted to keep her out, the new survivors and the rest were undecided.

”If she’s guilty then what, we keep one of our best shooters in the brig? Sat there neutered?”

”Why should she get to walk after this?”

Kas wanted to just listen, but just listening meant bad decisions could be made with no input. He wasn't the elder here or the one making the call but he felt a compulsion. “If we get rid of her, we might as well be killing five others, she’s beyond good at what she does.”

The debate went on for about an hour with no clear winner but a clear decision. They would keep Taela in her role guarding them, on the condition that she’d face a trial if she survived. It was the best of both worlds, they kept her and kept a sense of justice in the group. Three guesses who gave the group that idea. Jal Obenn their Jedi friend, but also the Zabrak female whispering to him, she was really clear-headed under pressure. Between the two of them they had things well in hand to make a good case. Not everyone was happy, but that's always true.

Kas had heard enough, happy the right decision was being made for all their sakes, he went to stare at a wall in the temple, an old run-down garden with no plants left alive, everything here was dead but the stillness was much better than the wailing or eerie noises outside. He'd heard enough yammering for the day and just wanted everyone to stop arguing. Fluffy the ship's pet sat in his lap, he didn't know what species it was, but it ate a lot for its size. The thing purred as he scratched it behind the neck. "Hope you survive this buddy."

Result: Positive Event

#Day 13 Final

We dodged a bullet, if we’d lost our last guard, I meant what I said at the trial, we might as well be throwing away lives. Taela did what she did, I have to think she was doing it for the right reasons, but I don’t know. The law gets murky down here, what was right before this happened isn’t now. I feel that numbness again, I don’t want to get too cold-hearted, I kinda miss just playing in the freighter. The world’s more complicated now, and deadlier.

Boy, am I glad that’s done! I went to see Taela and I don’t think she’s the same. She’s got colder if that’s possible. I think she’s questioning her choice. I don’t suppose she’ll be the first of us or the last. Meh no more hard stuff. Got a nicer day planned today.

Teens get to be young for once.

Despite the supply problems, with the trial behind them, the groups were either out searching the tunnels or relaxing. Niassi and Nisdra the two twi’lek girls were sharing their stories, they had so many things to talk about from their old camp. New stories were rare, so much time in the freighter meant everyone knew everyone else, till now.

Kas was getting to know the Twi’lek family, with Nyx’s arms around his neck. His girlfriend had bit of jealousy maybe, marking her turf, he didn’t mind, he kinda liked her jealous side. Both his brothers were there, one of his sisters and Nyx's brother. Everyone was laughing. Sat in the center of the maintenance tunnels, probably one of the safest spaces, surrounded on all sides by layers of metal or secure locations and guards on watch. The teens had a small fire going, wasteful but it was warm, and they were getting a much-needed break from being hunted for once.

“So she ran, and didn’t realise she was carrying the Ash Angel on her back! No lying she was looking for that bird, for at least ten minutes, she turned her head it squawked at her and she lost it.”

” Nuh-uh, no way, it wasn’t ten minutes, more like two.”

Niassi and Nisdra both were smiling, although Nisdra was blushing a bit from the story, mostly because Kas’s brother Kadeno kept looking at her then looking away shyly, then Niassi would nudge her, and Kas’s sister Angeka would rub it in with a hmm or remark. A lot of them were younger or ages with Kas, in their teens, at that age when it was all fun but really embarrassing, more so than usual.

”Wish Fienn were here.” Kas’s younger brother Duyo remarked “or Peshe. Fienn’s hurt but Peshe just sits there crying most days. I don’t understand.”

”I think she keeps looking at Cira and wanting her to wake up. You know we should go sit with Cira, talk to her. Don’t get many days where we can just chill.”

They carried on with their fireside banter for another hour, then they all got up, and went to see Cira, who hadn’t said a word for more than a week now. She was lying down, staring up at the sky. The nurse didn’t want them crowding her but the Doctor said to let them try.

“Hi Cira. We all miss you. We’ve got new friends now, maybe you’d like to hang one day.”

”We’re all here, we want you to hear our voices and know we're here. We love you babe.” Angeka held her hand.

All of them gathered around and said a few words, a few touched her hand, or forehead, and when Duyo did her hand twitched a finger around Duyo’s. “Doc she moved, I swear she moved!” The doctor rushed over but she was still, the finger had moved position though. “Could have been a response to touch or involuntary movement. Hard to say. Keep trying.”

Result: Positive Event

Diary 14 Final

I don’t care what anyone says, she moved. Cira moved, we all saw it. She’s still in there somewhere, maybe we can have more days like this to bring her back, if we are allowed them. Getting her outside, with the rest of us by the fire, might be the key. Maybe then my sister Peshe will stop crying, why is it sometimes the good days still hurt?

We have to get medical supplies, we are down to three days food again but our medical supplies are almost completely done. The next closest hospital is about three levels up, and our ithorian navigator is not coming with us this time, the crew are still angry about the freighter’s captain and the trial decision. Some of us want to send out another signal to orbit but the engineer says it's too soon and the energy in the temple generators is all but gone, he’s not keen on helping either. We are heading out now to find something, anything to help. Two teams to improve our chances, people are not working together as easily and its giving me a headache again. I feel something bad is going to happen. Maybe i'm paranoid.

#Diary End

Luck Luck and more Luck

Kas was in team two, and the freighter’s crew was in team one, they wanted to be away from the rest of the survivors, especially the pilot. On his travels he'd seen the pilot getting really angry and sitting in a corner alone, he lashed out when the boy went to talk. Maybe he liked the captain a lot and isn’t taking this well at all.

Team two though are just fine, yes sir. Ex Bounty hunter uncle Ceorsenn who says nothing; Nyx’s Father who Kas didn’t think ever liked him that much; Ceorsenn’s wife, Kas’s Aunt Baorly who doesn't say much either, she’s been having training under the nurse, and Kadeno, okay Kas’s brother was okay. His Aunt wasn’t too bad, but you know, family, its weird.

So the five of them set out, with no Jedi, he was trying to placate team one. To step up, Uncle Ceorsenn was leading, he had got sharp again, remembering the old bounty hunting days. All the survivors were starting to get sharper, better at what they did and staying alive. You had to or you died.

Vrrrrrssssshhhhhhhhhhhh

Wind, not a wail or a scream, there was a soft chilling wind blowing downward over the levels onto a vast open area. Not natural wind, nothing this low on coruscant was natural, and open areas were rare. In darkness with just the faintest of distant lights, they looked out over the railings and saw the strangest thing.

A large speeder holding a whole cluster of supplies, it had vaulted the railing and dropped supplies all over the level below. Someone had been trying to drive a speeder down the walkways and lost control. Team two looked for a way down, this was going to take time, and night was already falling on them. They'd be stuck here overnight, too far from the nexus for Kas's liking.

On the other side of the temple nexus, Team One had found a whole new area. They were calling it a memorial wall for the fallen. It was a pyramid-shaped room, set as a control point over several adjoining walkways, meaning they could be raised as bridges to protect the room, and extended when needed for escape to completely different parts of the level. Right now people were erecting small shrines for the dead, and keeping room for more.

Team 1 Result: Found new Safe Spot
Team 2 Extra Roll Attempt: Loads of Supplies found!
Yep that really happened. Maybe I’ll buy a lottery ticket. Remember all rolls can be found here now https://rolz.org/dr?room=coruscant_survivor till the rooms one day are deleted.

Sleeping this far out in black is hard. I didn’t sleep well, none of us did. We kept thinking we were seeing shapes moving around us. So we took turns to watch, and it didn’t matter at all. Nobody slept. We started in the early morning, looking for a way down to the crash site instead.

#Diary End

Greed never pays

Getting the supplies out wasn’t easy. Thankfully Kadeno was stronger than any of them, he heaved part of the torn barrier down, and with the help of Uncle Ceorsenn the two of them made a ramp down. It was not safe, that was for certain and progress was slow. The crashed speeder was right there! All those supplies, it was full of food, medicine, probably everything the dead speeder pilot had grabbed for his own needs.

“Nobodies coming back for this right?” Kadeno asked.

”Tough luck if they do.” Nyx’s father remarked. Kas was starting to dislike what he was turning into, because a part of him agreed. If someone did come back for these, they’d be leaving them with nothing, and part of him didn't care either. He felt sick with himself, it was wrong and he felt it deep down. Hesitating.

With that conflicting thought in mind the five of them worked quickly over the perilous ramp to funnel supplies over, all of the supplies! There was more than they could carry. It was going great until… Kas felt a gun barrel to his head.

“Thanks for getting the supplies out.” Four strangers who looked like the remains of the old gang down here, all had blasters pointing at them. “We’ll be handling it from here.”

”Like hell you will.” Uncle Ceorsenn leveled his gun up straight at their leader's head, creating a real game of chicken. “We’ve four guns to your two.” Kas’s uncle looked around and nodded, “yeah but they won’t do your head any good will they?”

All Kas had was his makeshift knife, he drew it, and another raised his weapon up. The gang leader could see the family resemblance. “Son? Brother? Nephew?” He smiled straight at the ex bounty hunter, “kill that one first.”

”Wait.” Kas’s Aunt stepped in front of him, “Just split it, no way you’ll carry it all anyway.”

”Smart lady, yer why not. Do it. Kill anyone who stops you.”

The gun standoff in the end fizzled out, they had half their extra supplies taken, but nobody was shot, and they still got half. Walking back knowing their greed got the better of them was wearying, and although everyone else was happy they had a few extra supplies, the team was kicking themselves.

Result: Positive Event (Barely)
Result, Extra Supplies Roll Attempt: Lost Supplies!

#Day 16 Final

Why did we have to hang around and be greedy, why couldn’t we just take what would could reach or easily get? Now we’ve got half as much as we could have had. Get in and get out, I’ll remember this, and that gang who robbed us. Was the Quarren behind it? Force-sake I hope not.

#Day 17

Frell it I’m having a day off. I’m sitting with Nyx near an unlit fire, pretending its warm and lit. Its dark, grey and cold. I hear the eerie sounds around me, I hear the wailing and clawing behind the eyes. We don’t care. Screw the galaxy. Screw these abominations. Nyx’s mother gave us a weird thick liquid impersonating caf, they are trying to make stim-caf, we’re giving it a try. Bleh.

What? Just WHAT?

“I didn’t think I’d be dying today.” Kas sipped the thick liquid.

”What?” A pair of attractive resting eyes looked up at him.

”Death by Stim-Caf.”

Nyx hit his chest, “hey be nice mum worked hard on this.”

”Sorry Nyx. We’ll get used to it.” He tried to smile and drink it.

It was a lonely day and that was just fine with both of them. Some days all you needed was being in the arms of your sweetheart. Other times you needed bad caf. “Love you.” Both said quietly away from prying eyes, sharing a moment.

Almost everyone was taking it easy, a day of rest was always a safe day with fewer risks. So when Uncle Sazen put his blaster rifle down to pee, the thump he got over his head took him by surprise. The gang were back, this time they were LET IN by the freighter’s pilot Culwod Zhom. What a piece of trash. They knew exactly where to go, and move without being seen until they were right at the freighter’s supply cache.

They were good, three survivors were unconscious before anyone even spotted them!

”HEY STOP THEM!”

There was gunfire but it was far too late, they were making a break for it, with almost every remaining supply the survivors had in stock. Our Zabrak survivor took a grazing blaster shot to the arm, but nobody else was hurt. This is madness!

Result:
Lost supplies! Again!

#Day 17 Final

It’s just like in the holovids, when people are hungry or angry, there’s always a traitor. They’ve got everything. Almost every last medicine for our wounded, food, water. We haven’t got enough to get through tomorrow. We have to take it back. We have to find them and take it. This is stupid. I can’t with this. No frelling way. Two days in a row. These bastards are not going to get away with it.
