So, lets say Mary is an apprentice to Joe, who is a marauder. Mary wants to be a Sith lord, but doesn't want to kill Joe because she likes him. Can Mary kill Jerry over there, who is a Sith lord that she has never met.

Can I become a higher rank through the "challenge system" as I like to call it, without being a Marauder? Or would I have to wait until I obtained the rank just below whatever I wanted to take.

Basically you can challenge a Sith Lord to an Arauk'kesh at any time.

The only problem is, it's a battle to the death.
A real serious deal. The FLs will be monitoring the thread and if you haven't contributed to the faction very much as a whole by doing missions and such they are going to be very bias as to letting your character achieve that high rank with minimum effort. Especially considering that these Lords do not joke around when it comes to power. They hold that rank for a reason and are quite capable of maintaining their position through strength. You have to be able to demonstrate through RP that your character has indeed surpassed their strength and it can't just be some kind of ultimate divine power that they suddenly possess out of the blue.

That's a nearly perfect way to keep people in check, so for example, if I was the pvp god, I couldn't just walk in there like "whaddup, your gonna die." then oops, now I'm a lord! I wasn't getting any ideas anyway, just happy to hear that it's a real challenge to become a lord.
