Have any swrpers ever had the pleasure of drinking this? A friend on mine made old style absinthe before, but afaik absinthe may be illegal if made properly.

Anyways, anyone ever had some of the kind thats legal now? Think its called Lucid or something.

you know nothing until you had the real green fairy. :P Im in my 30's and grew up in the UK so.... yeah.

The legality on a federal level in the US has been "technically" lifted, I think it was like 2006 or 7 when it officially was dropped, UK never had a ban ( some states I think still hold the ban though) the reason it was outlawed was based on an incorrect belief, and was lifted a few years ago, But the knock offs managed to thrive and even gained some image of being " fancy" there are a few makers from the US though making he real stuff, and doing it quite well from what I understand.

Pacificue is a US brand that is actually award winning if I recall.

duplais and pernod are my faves

lucid is a legit form

the bans were never on absinth itself, but thujone...because it's a powerful powerful psychedelic...the thing is the levels of it in absinthe are so low anyway " even in the pre-ban days" that the spirit clears by with legal amounts.

wonderful thing about absinthe...have 5 drinks from the same bottle, but add the sugar and flames different ways,( or go cold) you will have 5 different flavors

We have several Absinthe bars in New Orleans that have many different kinds. Half the fun is in the process of making the drink itself though, so finding a bar with the proper tools to serve Absinthe the old fashioned way can be tricky. In New Orleans, it can be a given that if there is a water dripper in the bar, that they'll serve it to you right. Have some patience, because it makes all the difference how its served.

Personally I can't stand the stuff. It tastes like black licorice. I just know this stuff because my husband is a bar tender at a fancy place. :<

it's the anise and fennel which are also in types of black licorice, iirc Absinthe and anise flavored black licorice showed up more or less at the same time in history, initial production of both are similar, and they hail from about the same region.

be would almost bet one was an accident of trying to make the other

Yeah, if there's one thing I've noticed is that Anise was a very popular flavor back in the old days. It was probably a coincidence that Absinthe and licorice ended up being similar. Kinda how green tea is a flavor in just about anything these days (I've seen green tea cookies, cakes, candy, and chocolate.) I think Anise is also in Bitters, if I'm not mistaken.

I have enjoyed both the real European Absinthe and the legal stuff here in the states, and Empress is right the legal stuff in the states doesn't measure up to the true stuff, what makes the difference is the Lodinum (Spelling on that one?)

I had some real stuff from the Czech Republic in 2007 when a foreign exchanges student was at my school. His mom mailed it over for us, it was pretty crazy as I recall.

Never had anything that when you drink it you can feel the warmth going through your body then it just turn to ice like Absinthe. Definitely an experience.
